Husband and toddler have eaten out of date sushi

Just in a bit of a panic as DH has just called me to say that he has accidentally eaten and given our toddler out of date sushie ( tesco meal deal pack). Use by was the 17/2 !
He said there was no obvious mold or bad taste.
I'm not normally a panicky person but this is so high risk with rice! It's been in his car for the weekend so not like its been in the fridge.
He bought some fresh today but didn't realise there was an old packet from last week!
Is there any I can do. Should I call nhs 111?

I can’t believe there are so many people who would call 111 because they ate something out of date but feel fine.

FryingPam · 24/02/2026 16:42

I’m not usually one to panic about these things and more in the ‘wait and see’ camp, but sushi out of date for a week and in the car, I’d also seek medical advice to find out how poorly my toddler might get and what to do.

Lucylurkery · 24/02/2026 16:43

Fingers crossed!

There's a bacteria that grows on rice that can be fatal, if she has got food poisoning I woukd take her there and the container if they still have it to check if what kind of food poisoning it is.

Rice food poisoning still behaves like normal food poisoning. Most people will just be sick for a day or two

If/when ops family get sick just manage like normal food poisoning. Rest, hydration. If showing signs of dehydration then seek medical help

earshadow · 24/02/2026 16:45

At least you didn’t have any !

Gonners · 24/02/2026 16:46

There is no raw fish in supermarket sushi meals, which are usually some combo of smoked salmon, tinned tuna and cooked prawns.

I don’t think 111 will be able to help as they won’t know whether they actually have food poisoning or not. They will probably tell you to watch and wait to see if symptoms emerge. I would expect that they do have FP in terms of putting toddler in old clothes, keeping a bowl ready etc. but I would hope that they don’t and try not to panic. It’s not really helpful or fair for PPs to say it can be fatal when they haven’t even been sick yet

The scaremongering re extreme cases of food poisoning is deeply unhelpful to the OP and classic MN.

Sailawaygirl · 24/02/2026 16:48

It's the rice I'm worries about. I'm sure the fish is full of preservatives.
So far they are happy running outside!

Bowls, spare bedding, towels and water on stand by.

So if the date on it is the 17th February, that would have been last Tuesday, but you say it was left in the car over the weekend. Had it been stored in the fridge until then? When did he actually buy it?

The toddler might get very poorly or not at all. No doctor can't predict it and they cant prevent it at this stage.

At this point all you can do is wait and see. Stick to bland foods, stay hydrated and prepare for vomiting. Even if the toddler becomes ill enough to need hospital care they will most likely just give fluids and wait for the body to deal with food poisoning. Obviously keep an eye out for signs of dehydration and seek medical care if this happens. There's nothing else you can do

It’s rice. Technically yes it could cause food poisoning but it might just cause a stomach ache.

Technically?

Rice (and pasta) can KILL if it’s left out because of bacterial growth. Google it.

I’d be more worried about the rice as well. People have been known to get extremely sick very quickly from eating bad rice.

Benchdogs · 24/02/2026 17:01

I just want to offer a hug, OP, I know what realising something like this has happened feels like, and the panic. Its awful.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 24/02/2026 17:01

If it helps on the rice front, traditionally sushi rice would have rice vinegar, salt and sometimes sugar, mixed in with the rice once cooked. So hopefully the vinegar helps keep any nasties at bay...

TheFairyCaravan · 24/02/2026 17:02

I had food poisoning from rice. It was awful, but food poisoning is.

Just be prepared and go out now for some rehydration sachets. There’s no need for all this panic about A&E etc yet.

Mangelwurzelfortea · 24/02/2026 17:04

You might be OK. I accidentally ate a two-week-out-of-date pork pie with no ill effects! Fingers crossed.

AnAppleAWeek · 24/02/2026 17:06

ey are downing kefir and juice from sauerkraut for the good gut bacteria. Worth a shot.

Thats enough MN for me today!

Tetheringattheend · 24/02/2026 17:07

Just popping up to say I hope your little one is ok OP and doesn't come down with anything. I'll keep my fingers crossed for them.

The idea of bad rice being consumed by a toddler is very unnerving, so I completely know where your coming from.

Your partner though, jeez. I'm not usually one for violence but he needs a kicking for this one.

NewZebra · 24/02/2026 17:12

Furlane · 24/02/2026 15:59

was It raw fish? Probably just smoked salmon which will probably be fine.

The issue is the rice, not the fish. Some people don’t realise how dangerous rice can be.

MushMonster · 24/02/2026 17:12

I would call 111.
Fish can have rather nasty microbes too.
I would bot be eating any dairy! Why the yougurt!
If the sushi had something nasty, they have followed it with plenty of good nutrients for good growth!
I would have nothung, but water or juice. Till medical advice.

This sounds like something my husband would do. He once fed me a chicken salad with raw chicken juices mixed into the dressing when I was heavily pregnant. I explicitly told him to keep the chidlen and juices and seperate from the salad... he used the marinate from the raw chicken as the dressing. I was fine but I once ate a gone off sausage and I got really bad food posining, but the sausage tasted bad and smelled like death so if it didnt smell it wil probably be fine.

Why would you expect 111 to say other than ‘you may get unwell’ which the OP already knows?

BloominNora · 24/02/2026 17:15

Oh dear - fingers crossed they have iron guts but I suspect you are in for a night at the vomit hotel. DDs BF had food poisoning when he was here a few weeks ago (caused by a Weatherspoon's breakfast) - it wasn't pleasant!

I'm usually pretty relaxed about out of date foods if they're not off, but rice is one thing I never risk it with.

Fingers crossed for you @Sailawaygirl

What advice do you think 111 can give for people who might have given themselves food poisoning?!
