Husband and toddler have eaten out of date sushi

Just in a bit of a panic as DH has just called me to say that he has accidentally eaten and given our toddler out of date sushie ( tesco meal deal pack). Use by was the 17/2 !
He said there was no obvious mold or bad taste.
I'm not normally a panicky person but this is so high risk with rice! It's been in his car for the weekend so not like its been in the fridge.
He bought some fresh today but didn't realise there was an old packet from last week!
Is there any I can do. Should I call nhs 111?

What is ‘Nurse on Call’?

I’m assuming its like 111 but in another country?

Must be.

Well yes because he's the father who also lost three pregnancies as well and watched their births, changed nappies, sat up all night. Someone I could count on to do the right thing. Bloody hell @Frangardens don't your children have this father?

Huh? So because your child has a father, if you were contacted about this you genuinely would just shrug your shoulders and crack on with your day - because their father is with the child and it’s his problem.

Mind boggling. Thankfully - you’re on your own there I suspect @placemats

Frangardens · 25/02/2026 06:45

@Sailawaygirl didn’t include In her Op that this sushi wasnt just a week out of date….

it was a week out of date AND had been festering in a car, unrefrigerated for the week!!

Cupcake31 · 25/02/2026 06:56

@Sailawaygirl hope both child and husband are okay

Miyagi99 · 25/02/2026 07:21

It won’t be sashimi as Tescos don’t sell it, I always buy them with the yellow stickers on and have often eaten them the next day. But a week, I thought you’d have smelt it!

DontTellMama · 25/02/2026 07:29

How are they both @Sailawaygirl ?

What's middle class about a mum worried her young child could get food poisoning?

It's the sushi that's middle class, I think.

SamPoodle123 · 25/02/2026 07:41

Yikes, I would be freaking out! Maybe give them charcoal? We had to do that for our dog after she ate raisins....after inducing vomitting at the vet. The charcoal helps absorb the toxins.

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 25/02/2026 07:41

What the hell? I don't usually stress over slightly out of date food that looks and smells fine, but this? Not only is it a week out of date but it hasn't even been in the fridge! What kind of utter incompetent is he? I've read that he had two packs in the car and got them muddled up but I'm still not fully understanding how that can happen unless he's extremely stupid and careless. Who drives around with out of date fish sushi in their car for a week?

I suppose it's just a waiting game now. At least you are on high alert so if it looks like there is going to be an unpleasant consequence you are prepared for it, know the cause and can act quickly.

Oh give over. It's just food. It's a Tesco meal deal, not Nobu.

It's over 12 hours since OP last posted, and at that point, three hours after they ate the sushi, neither was suffering any adverse consequences. I think it's pretty safe to assume they're fine.

😆

Asda / Morrisons / Lidl / Aldi / corner shops…. ALL sell sushi. And stacks of it. Alongside the Cornish pasties and McCoy crisps

Or they've been up all night worshipping the porcelain god! 3 hours isn't that long after you've eaten something suspect. Poisoning can come on later. I hope they're both OK especially the toddler, poor little thing!

What advice do you think 111 can give for people who might have given themselves food poisoning?!

I think they may tell OP NOT to give her toddler dairy just after well out of date rice and fish! For starters.

Also, I did not want to send OP in an even deeper panic, but fish, including the one is sushi, can develop parasites. And they may recommend treatment for both her toddler and husband.

If it had parasites they'll have been there while it was in date. Unless you're suggesting fish pick their parasites up post- mortem and in the packaging. Also the fish will have been frozen so any parasites will be killed.

What treatment would they recommend?

katepilar · 25/02/2026 08:20

I personally would take medicinal charcoal if I ate something that is likely to be toxic. I have a feeling its not a common thing to do in UK which surprises me. It binds the toxins and is able to stop one feel like vomitting.

I have search this thread for charcoal and found some reactions to charcoal recommendation shocking. Its a basic staple thing to have at home and take on holiday for us. I have just checked the info leaflet and it doesnt even list any contraindications.

Hope your family are ok, OP.

Activated charcoal??? The mind fucking boggles 🤣🤣🤣

Why? Its a perfectly valid thing to suggest. See my post above or google.

I think she means it's unlikely to be administered by A&E. "Just in case".

Pinkgin00 · 25/02/2026 08:23

How are they OP, any ill effects?

Of course it's just food. And yes, you can buy it almost anywhere. But it still has middle class connotations in a way that Greggs sausage rolls, supermarket baked beans or Pot Noodles do not.

Maybe in 1985.
