Husband and toddler have eaten out of date sushi

Just in a bit of a panic as DH has just called me to say that he has accidentally eaten and given our toddler out of date sushie ( tesco meal deal pack). Use by was the 17/2 !
He said there was no obvious mold or bad taste.
I'm not normally a panicky person but this is so high risk with rice! It's been in his car for the weekend so not like its been in the fridge.
He bought some fresh today but didn't realise there was an old packet from last week!
Is there any I can do. Should I call nhs 111?

So he didn't know he had out of date food in his car , he would normally throw it in the bin if he didn't eat it. He bought some new today then randomly found the old one and ate that. Then found the other one and checked the date and went oh shit

if food is off it usually smells bad and the good packet would have felt cold from the fridge so how he missed that and ate warm sushi heaven alone knows.

jeez though it’s hardly life or death. No wonder people’s anxiety is clouds judging by this.

Mymanyellow · 25/02/2026 09:23

I only came back to this thread to see if anyone has been sick yet.
What I don’t understand is why it didn’t stink to high heaven.

Firstly, how on earth do you know if it was warm or cold?! Being in the car where I am, it would be cold.
And actually, for a toddler, it might be very very serious.

111 can't do anything. Keep inside for a day or so -near the loo! Make sure you have loo rolls, fresh bedding and sick bowls easily accessible just incase it all kicks off. Good luck!

Who cares if warm or cold.

it was in refrigerated for at least 7 days!

Why the hell didn't he just throw it in the bin after finding it in his car. He sounds dangerous.

I’m assuming it fell out and he muddled it up with the new one he bought on the day. That’s pretty much what it says in the op.

It would have done. And looked grotty too.

I suspect he saw it in the car, thought “great don’t need to go to the shops as that’s lunch sorted, ate it and gave to toddler and then clocked the date and thought “oh shit, worse than I originally thought”

What's middle class about a mum worried her young child could get food poisoning?

Maybe she means it's rather MC or even posh not to always eat week-old sushi!😂

Plasticdreams · 25/02/2026 09:55

How’s everyone doing op?

Hope they got lucky and they’re OK today. 🤞 Sorry this happened, it sounds so stressful. And I’m sorry that you’re having to see so many responses here written by people who, for unknown reasons, were unable to read your fairly succinct post explaining exactly what happened!

how are you all?

He sounds dangerous and a complete idiot. He is not a responsible person.

Oh have a day off. We all make mistakes. People calling him neglectful and dangerous are so incredibly dramatic it’s laughable. I suppose you’ve never made such an error because you’re completely infallible.

tootiredtobeinspired · 25/02/2026 10:34

Honestly the hysteria around rice and food poisoning is crackers. You do realise that cultures all over the world regularly eat reheated rice and still manage to survive?
While in this case, I dont think anyone would suggest eating anything that had been stored in a car for a week instead of a fridge is a good idea, it certainly does not need the level of panic displayed by some posters. Not sure what some people expect the NHS to do? Pre-emptively pump the stomach of a toddler - just to avoid the possibility of a short bout of D&V caused by some rice! FFS🙄

queenofarles · 25/02/2026 10:57

I Hope everyone is OK, just can’t imagine it tasting or smelling fine? like supermarket sandwiches they are a couple of days old by the time they hit the shelves , I pray it was marinated in strong ginger and vinegar and that OP lives somewhere arctic and the sushi was kept in below zero conditions all this time.

I completely agree - one of the most ludicrous threads I’ve read on here in ages.

Eh?? I KNOW! I was responding to the pp who said DH should have known it was the old one because it would be warm.

I mean, when the DH realised his mistake, which I assume was very soon after eating it, he should have got medical advice for the toddler - eg they might have suggested that it'd be better to induce vomiting now, rather than waiting to see if anything happened.
They also could have given info about what to do if the toddler did become ill from week-old sushi, and whether that in itself would then be urgent or whether they should just treat as per normal d&v.

I didn't see anyone suggesting that a preemptive stomach pump was a logical thought

I was going to say don't worry, but with it being out of the fridge too that's more of a concern. He will probably be fine but keep an eye on the toddler.

Or egg fried rice is cooked rice from a day or two ago (to dry it out) and then fried.

I think this is one of those "get into trending" and run threads. OP had time to bump the thread every 20min in the first few hours and doesn't need to come back anymore now it's got momentum.

No culture eats 7 day old rice in Asia , rice is consumed at all 3 meals , it’s cooked fresh every morning and is on the stove all day and people scoop some each meal , hardly any rice remains by next morning.

It was about 19 hours ago now, so she should know.

Haggisfish3 · 25/02/2026 11:31

People massively underestimate the risk of bacillus cereus poisoning as others have said on here. worst food poisoning of my life came from rice that had been left out, only for three hours. It could easily kill a toddler for reasons explained earlier. Hopefully op dc and dh are fine. Once 24 hours has passed, I would start to relax a little. 😬

TeamGeriatric · 25/02/2026 11:39

What did they actually eat and are they ill? If we are talking avocado or cucumber sushi they may well be fine. Although struggling to imagine how it would taste edible after a week in the car? Raw fish or chicken is a different matter entirely, but it salmon nigiri to most toddlers tastes. Genuinely though, I recently made myself toast with mouldy bread, I popped it in the toaster, buttered it and ate 90% of it whilst looking at my phone, before finally noticing how revolting the bread was. We are not just talking a few bits of green, there was quite a lot of mould growing just on the base. I was horrified, but 2 weeks later and it didn't even give me tummy ache.
