Husband and toddler have eaten out of date sushi

Sailawaygirl · 24/02/2026 15:49

Just in a bit of a panic as DH has just called me to say that he has accidentally eaten and given our toddler out of date sushie ( tesco meal deal pack). Use by was the 17/2 !
He said there was no obvious mold or bad taste.
I'm not normally a panicky person but this is so high risk with rice! It's been in his car for the weekend so not like its been in the fridge.
He bought some fresh today but didn't realise there was an old packet from last week!
Is there any I can do. Should I call nhs 111?

I had such bad food poisoning after eating supermarket sushi (straight from the shop) I have no idea what was wrong with it but it made me so ill. I’ve never touched it since, I really hope your toddler escapes it

I would phone "nurse on call".

They might ask you to go to nearest A&E and be administered with activated charcoal, or might think waiting and observing is sufficient.
Keep a record of the actual ingredients.

Activated charcoal??? The mind fucking boggles 🤣🤣🤣

I don’t wish to be the bearer of bad news but I thought the same recently when by DC ate rice that had been left out in a warm climate. I thought that as he hadn’t shown signs of being ill 6 hours later that he had gotten away with it. 🙈 Unfortunately it kicked in about 20 hours later but his symptoms were fever, fatigue, stomach ache and loss of appetite and generally feeling like crap. He didn’t have vomiting or diarrhoea thankfully.
Hopefully they are ok OP.

In the case of bacillus cereus - the first 6 hours is relevant. If you get past that time, then you're more likely to get a milder form (diarrhoea type). I would breathe a massive sigh of relief past 6 hours, but it doesn't mean they won't still become unwell.

I would be very surprised and impression if a toddler was eating a load of sauerkraut!

What is Sauerkraut? Pickled German? Sour German?

Calliopespa · 25/02/2026 00:20

Sailawaygirl · 24/02/2026 16:08

So he didn't know he had out of date food in his car , he would normally throw it in the bin if he didn't eat it. He bought some new today then randomly found the old one and ate that. Then found the other one and checked the date and went oh shit

How did he not smell it?

Calliopespa · 25/02/2026 00:22

Activated charcoal??? The mind fucking boggles 🤣🤣🤣

I know they use that for dogs, but I think it needs to be used swiftly to have a chance to bind to it.

This is the most mumsnet reply of all time. British kids are heathens CHECK
Chicken nugggets and chips CHECK
Ending it with “no wonder there’s a fucking obesity crisis” is just <chefs kiss>

I couldn't believe the obesity crisis swipe when what we are worrying about is food poisoning. Not really living in the moment ...

Lotsalotsagiggles · 25/02/2026 00:25

Hoping they have dodged a bullet and are fine, in sure you'll know tomorrow if they aren't

Lots of water x

Last week DS2 had an elderly patient, with a broken hip, on the back of an ambulance for over 4hrs. He couldn’t get them off to get them xrayed, or made more comfortable because there was no where to put them. People are already turning up to A&E for ridiculous reasons, like one person who brought their child in with a fecking verruca, so they don’t need people coming in just in case their child gets sick, too.

I swear to god common sense has gone missing in this country.

StoneColdAlibi · 24/02/2026 15:58

Thats insane. Pouring dairy and fermented liquids into a stomach that may well start vomiting sounds like a Jackass prank.

I agree with this. Ride it out, if they feel Ill or sick, treat it then, don't try and fix it now with fermented stuff!

AlwaysTheRenegade · 25/02/2026 00:44

How are they doing?

Daygloboo · 25/02/2026 00:58

Twonewcats · 24/02/2026 15:53

Yeah, I'd definitely phone pharmacy or 111, to ask for advice at least.
And why is DH not phoning them, rather than passing it to you?

??

Food poisoning is contagious, risking infecting people at a funeral, many of which will be old and vulnerable, and the many people you would have encountered at multiple service stations is insanely selfish.

Fair.
Nobody at the funeral was infected and ailed, I'd have known
My grandmother was one of very few advocates for me within an abusive childhood.
I was absolutely not going to not turn up for her funeral, disregarding the verbal abuse I'd have suffered had I not.

Those in glass houses should not throw stones.

PretendHedgehog · 25/02/2026 01:26

How are they doing OP? Any signs of anything bad?

Mum18282 · 25/02/2026 02:25

OP I’ve only read your messages.

Until I was much older I didn’t know that you’re supposed to throw away rice after 2 days. I’m Chinese and cooked it in vast quantities and ate it up to 4-5 days in the fridge. My mum never told me otherwise so presumably as a child we kept it for more than 2 days.

I’m careful now but it’s never made me ill. Hope your toddler will be fine.

SweetnsourNZ · 25/02/2026 03:15

PinkDaffodil2 · 24/02/2026 16:31

@TomatoSandwiches genuine question why would you take a vomiting toddler to A&E? Especially when you know it’s due to food poisoning. Is this a parenting expectation I have missed.

To manage hydration maybe. If they are vomiting a lot they could need a drip put in.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/02/2026 03:50

Lots of info is available online snd there's absolutely no harm in calling for medical advice. Why guess?

Is food poisoning dangerous for toddlers?

"Yes, food poisoning is dangerous for toddlers (age 5 and under)
because their developing immune systems cannot fight bacteria as well as adults, and they dehydrate rapidly. While most recover quickly, severe cases can cause serious complications like hemolytic uremic syndrome (kidney failure)."

"Symptoms: Look for fever, nausea, belly pain, vomiting, and diarrhea."

What if my toddler ate old sushi?

"If your toddler ate old sushi,
watch for symptoms of food poisoning like vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, or fever over the next 1–5 days. Because young children are at higher risk for dehydration and severe reactions, monitor them closely and contact a pediatrician if symptoms are severe or persistent."

  • "Watch for Symptoms: Look for nausea, diarrhea, belly pain, fever, or excessive irritability (which can signal pain in young children).
  • Watch for Red Flags: Call a doctor immediately if your child has a fever over 101∘F / 38.3∘C
vomiting for more than 12 hours, severe, constant stomach pain, or signs of severe dehydration (fewer wet diapers, no tears. Lethargy
  • Timeframe: Symptoms can appear 4 hours to 24 hours later, but sometimes take up to 3 days to develop

Excuse the wonky formatting.
Also, just phone you local medical advice line. Don't take chances with children, especially young ones.

What's middle class about a mum worried her young child could get food poisoning?

What's middle class about a mum worried her young child could get food poisoning?

A mum worried her son will get food poisoning is not "middle-class".

A mum and dad, plus a bunch of hysterical posters, urging them to "call 111" or "go to A&E" when there have been zero symptoms and no indication of whether or not there will be any is not middle-class either, it's just ridiculous.

I didn’t think he intentionally left it there… but your car must be pretty messy to leave pack of sushi lying around in your cars for days and then… and this is when it gets really weird…. Somehow “mix it up” with the fresh, cold sushi you have just bought from the shops!

So, say his car is quite messy?
