That is quite disturbing. They are obsessed with sheep 😬

Holland won another gold, short track relay men. 💪

This one is quite spectacular, he got told no on tariffs

It was screeching. There's no getting away from that.

😂

Very distressing and disturbing.

Well done Holland. 🎉

Of my memory serves me correctly the Netherlands have always been strong at speed skating and also the velodrome events in the summer?

You are correct. They're also good at hockey, swimming, equestrian sports and these days athletics. They punch above their weight sportswise.

DuncinToffee · 21/02/2026 09:58

Definitely punching above their weight. I thought it was interesting that the gold came in disciplines we are usually not that good at.

Yes they do have a good swim team. They don’t have many para swimmers but their star para swimmer Rogier Dorsman who is a VI athlete regularly tops the rankings. Ds has swam quite a few competitions where he’s been competing.

grannycake · 21/02/2026 10:11

Netherlands also dominate in Womens Cyclocross and a lot of womens road racing

Yes they are brilliant at cycling events. I always assumed it was
one of those things that’s due to cycling being a big thing in Holland due to the terain it had a lot of funding? Like Australia is known for its swimming as there is lots of funding int swimming?

also a fan of the Dutch kit - the orange and black looks fab! Much more interesting than the navy, red and white of GBR and US, CHN and various other smaller teams. Never worked out why Aus wear yellow and green though 😂

grannycake · 21/02/2026 12:06

@DuncinToffee. it is great fun to watch. Season is over for this year but Dutch women won the World championships, European championships and overall titles in 3 of the 4 main championship series. Not uncommon for the top ten to be all Dutch

Raven08 · 21/02/2026 12:14

All this soup talk...I'm going to make a pan 😋
And eat my body weight in biscuits.

PandoraSocks · 21/02/2026 12:30

I don't know if it is because of the run up to the by-election plus the "Re" parties squabbling, but social media seems very much like this atm:

I’m not a soup fan. I like the idea of it and make some tasty ones but it doesn’t ‘work’ for me. However much protein I put in and however much I have and however much bread and butter I have with it I’m hungry again about 10 mins after finishing. No idea why.

You can't be hungry after a bowl of snert, especially if it's served traditionally with rye bread and katenspek (weird half ham, half bacon stuff, which has been smoked and salted).
Mind you even that's not as filling as an oliebol, which is a Dutch doughnut. I reckon you could use them to build a house.

Raven08 · 21/02/2026 13:23

I lob pastacini in to bulk it up, or lentils.
Served with brown bread and lashings of cold salted butter

You are not having the right oliebollen then, they are supposed to be quite airy (luchtig).

Rookworst over katenspek

I have totally given up on oliebollen.
Pepernoten on the other hand....... Dangerous.

I bet I could. In fairness largely because I wouldn’t eat any of it - I can’t bear peas in any form! I also don’t really like smoked meats so that’s a whole non starter apart from rye bread and butter which I do like!
Facetiousness aside, I would still be hungry. Lentil sops, bean soups, soups with loads of meat - none of them fill me for more than about 10mins. It’s a weirdness of my body.

DuncinToffee · 21/02/2026 14:27

We used to have pancakes with pea soup growing up Smile

Soup is mostly a starter or lunch rather than a meal

The Dutch also serve soup for afternoon tea. They offer 'British-style' afternoon teas, with sandwiches, cakes, scones, and soup. I really can't cope with that.
Although still not as bad as the French DFDS ferry staff who microwave the scones and serve them with honey and no jam.

Thanks for the new thread. Tax is grumpy cat as we dared to go away for days without him and he is making us pay for it with death stares.

My brown soda bread is in the oven and I'm having cream of tomato soup with it. All homemade but obviously not from scratch as I didn't grow any of the ingredients.

Woohoo, our mullet got another speed skating gold Grin
