And in this morning's news: DD has managed to secure a driving test at the first attempt in the location she wanted.

Welk done to your DD - that's really good news (and lucky!)

pointythings · 23/02/2026 09:33

Ducky head photo as promised! There are two more duckies on the other side.

Martin Lewis fact checked Badenoch on her student loan plan, explaining how it only helps the richest graduates.

She didn't take it well

Impressive Pointy, how long did that take?

@Evenstar I am sorry to hear about your shingles, not exactly what you need right now. I hope you feel better soon

@pointythings the ducks are fab!

Impressive Pointy, how long did that take?

She buzzes and bleaches herself, painting the design on took about an hour. We have done more complex ones: we did a leaves and vines one that took 2.5 hours.

PandoraSocks · 23/02/2026 09:54

How do you keep the different coloured dyes separate, pointy?

dontcallmelen · 23/02/2026 09:57

Oh my Pointy dds hair art is totally fabulous love it & great news with the driving test.

At the risk of being awkward, Martin Lewis is correct but Badenoch also has a point. I'm not sure it has to be either or.

That said Badenoch is clearly only focusing on wealthier students which reflects wider Tory policies.

Notonthestairs · 23/02/2026 10:19

Really sorry to read about your shingles Evenstar. I had shingles 30 years ago when I was a teenager and it was incredibly painful. I hope the medication kicks in swiftly.

(I had rather hoped you couldnt get shingles more than once! 😬)

Great hair pointy's DD!

If you use the kind of dyes which are intended for artwork, they don't bleed. You paint them on dry hair - I use artist' brushes. They're also fully mixable. The downside is that they don't last all that long, but you can easily refresh if you want to.

Finally announced, the shape of the SEND reforms

Most will get new individual support plans (ISPs) in mainstream schools - with increased funding for therapists

EHCPs only for most severe case starting from 2035. Those who are KS1 or younger will be reassessed at secondary transition.

It's DS2's last year in formal education but it will still be interesting to see how it pans out. Presumably the ISP is to replace the "my plan" which wasn't worth the pdf it was saved as and the "packages" will help to prevent all those woolly, non-specific word salads that mean children with severe needs end up unsupported for much of the day.

Oh, and 🦆 💖

Piggywaspushed · 23/02/2026 13:12

Obviously, I will see the EHCPs through a (secondary) teacher lens. I cannot see how these plans won't massively and negatively affect teacher workload.

This added to the new increased workload attached to exam concessions will be the thing that breaks me!

I agree. And they aren’t actually ‘new’. As a second in dept in a school in a difficult catchment in the late 90s we were writing these - it was a requirement. Almost impossible to keep up with and therefore of questionable use. And workload has increased since then.

Piggywaspushed · 23/02/2026 13:17

Yes- the old school action , school action plus stuff!

At the moment, the reality is that nearly every child in my school with an EHCP doesn't get what is written down. We only have TAs in maths and English lessons, for example. We used to have 30 TAs (very big school with year groups of 400) . Now we have 8 plus three graduate tutors who work one to one but that isn't necessarily with SEN students - also FSM and other vulnerabilities.

But in a country where no one gets their rights, who'd notice ?

As a parent with a child in Education who had an ECHP, I agree.

ISPs are an excellent addition.

ISPs would be an excellent addition if there were money attached to employ someone to keep on top of them and to ensure they don’t add to the already unmanageable workload of teachers. Otherwise the flow of teachers from the professional will continue to increase and nobody will get taught at all, never mind have additional needs met.

Oh, I can definitely see it from that POV, too. Hopefully the teaching unions will be able to make this clear during the consultation phase.

And the bit about all teachers having the training - would that be just another useless one hour lecture following on from the useless one about behaviour management, during teacher training?

CPD training is of mixed quality sadly. Some is excellent, some useless. It’s a bit of a lottery.

Are you happy with the head teacher and lead team in all areas at your school @cardibach ?

I’m retired now. I’ve only worked in very few schools where I was though…
