If I passed you on a narrow path, would I be able to smell fabric softener down wind?

Just been on a walk and struck by how many people you pass don't smell of perfume, instead they smell of eau de lenor
is there something that you do/aspire to? How much of the stuff do you use to make it so strong?
I don't mind it in laundry. Just not my signature scent™️

On Mumsnet the stench of BO, wet dog and unwashed arse cracks is preferable to even the slightest whiff of Lenor. I dread to think what these people smell like!

Yes, it's really weird isnt it? I always wonder if these people are so used to the smell of their own musty fug body odour and oniony sweat that anything that deviates from that is abhorrent to them 😆

SouthernNights59 · 14/02/2026 20:34

I use an eco fabric conditioner. It barely smells at all, and certainly not once the clothes come out of the machine.

Having said that, I don't think I have ever smelt fabric conditioner on anyone as they pass me, and I have a fairly good sense of smell. None of my clothes are slimy (???), and my towels are perfectly able to dry my body.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 14/02/2026 20:36

No, I don’t use it.

Must say I’d much rather smell wet dog than stinky arse cracks any day.

pavillion1 · 14/02/2026 21:50

I hope so

abitsadbuthappy · 14/02/2026 21:52

I don't use fabric conditioner as it made my washing machine all gross. I don't really wear perfume either as it usually gives me headaches. My washing powder is just fairy as my skin is too sensitive for the heavily scented biological versions.

twohotwaterbottles · 14/02/2026 22:00

I love fabric conditioner smells ☺️

Are you receiving treatment for your anxiety?

I don't have anxiety. Just because you don't agree with what I've said, doesn't mean you need to sling passive aggressive questions at me.

Nereidd · 14/02/2026 22:33

I don't use it but I don't mind it, I much prefer that than someone's vile vape cloud.

I think Fairy is one of the stronger smelling washing powders!

God, so do I.

These are probably the people honking on public transport, or squished shoulder-to-shoulder in the theatre.

Well I hate fabric softeners and air fresheners but I love expensive perfume so I smell of Shalimar.

🤢 one of my least favourite perfumes.

OhDear111 · 14/02/2026 22:53

No. My perfume!

likelysuspect · 14/02/2026 22:55

No I dont use anything like this.

You'll smell my perfume though and stuff I use on my hair.

SliceofTosst · 14/02/2026 23:40

No, because it smells fake and overpowering. Maybe my perfume if I'm wearing it.

Fairy definitely has a much lower amount of fragrance than most other mainstream brands Persil, ariel and certainly surf and bold. Most non-bios are less strongly fragranced I used to use the ecover but DH complained that it smelled bad. Perhaps it depends how much people use or maybe you are just particularly sensitive to Fairy for some reason. I am very sensitive to smells and get ill at the smell of other peoples perfume or even deodorant at times but Fairy is tolerable.

It’s not “a bit” of perfume. If your bedding and clothes are washed in it, it’s a chemical nasty entering your body via your lungs, skin and eyes 24/7.

If you have carpets or upholstered furniture or laminate surfaces in your home you are awash in gases.

PithyViewer · 15/02/2026 02:36

It sounds to me like a lot of people are over-using fabric conditioner.

When used in moderation, as you're supposed to, the smell on your clothes is slight and soon goes away.

So minimise what you DO have control over.

PersephoneGoddessOfSpring · 15/02/2026 08:17

I use:
Scented bath/shower products
Scented body lotion
Perfume
Hairspray
FABRIC CONDITIONER (not the Scented balls though)

I clean my house using fragranced products (cleaned very regularly)
I have dogs
I vape

I think, using the above list I am capable of offending all and every mumsnetter at any given time! I feel like I should win some kind of award 🥇

Anndalouzier · 15/02/2026 08:30

Someone vaping in my experience and negates the point of them using any other perfume because the vape is just so gross

Maybe they wear the perfume for their own benefit, not for passers by?
There are loads of smells I don’t like (vapes generally being one of them), but part of living in a society is that you put up with the people around you. As seen above, you can’t win because there will always be someone who doesn’t like the particular smell you’re emanating.
Like the PP above who says she doesn’t smell of fabric conditioner, only her expensive perfume Shalimar, which is a smell that makes me queasy.
I’d rather people didn’t smell of BO and unwashed clothes, which is what I encounter most often ‘in the wild’, but I can’t actually control it (although I do to some extent by refusing to use public transport!). No point getting worked up by something you can’t control.

SyntheticFluff · 14/02/2026 11:15

Too bloody right. There is no polite way to say this but I work in the public sector and some people I have dealings with are swathed in a virtually visible fug of weed smoke, cigarette smoke, unwashed clothes, unwashed bodies, unwashed hair, stinking sweaty shoes and occasionally stale urine. I have every sympathy for those who struggle with daily life, but my God sometimes we are reeling with the smells. Wafts of Lenor would be heaven.

Sounds like my place of work. You have my sympathies!

I just saw something from Which? on Insta with a woman saying fabric conditioner builds up on your clothes and then stops the detergent from working properly, so you’re better off ditching it because your clothes aren’t going to be properly cleaned.

Yep, after reading the Which article I stopped using fabric conditioner. I don’t use any perfume, or air freshener or anything, I can’t stand artificial smells and they’re awful for our lungs. Just simple no smell fabric cleaning liquid and a roll on deodorant. When I buy on Vinted, every item I receive is stinking of febreze (apparently what everyone uses and only assuming this as I’ve never used it myself) and it makes my stomach turn. Takes about 5 washes before the smell goes. I once sat next to a guy on a plane and genuinely felt sick all of the flight because his awful aftershave was overwhelming, so I feel your pain OP!

PembeGreyfurt · 15/02/2026 14:44

No, because I don't use fabric softeners, never saw the need. You might smell my perfume though 😊
