If I passed you on a narrow path, would I be able to smell fabric softener down wind?

Just been on a walk and struck by how many people you pass don't smell of perfume, instead they smell of eau de lenor
is there something that you do/aspire to? How much of the stuff do you use to make it so strong?
I don't mind it in laundry. Just not my signature scent™️

No, because it's dreadful stuff.

3luckystars · 14/02/2026 11:08

There are worse things to smell of. Be glad it’s not BO.

ArcticSkua · 14/02/2026 11:12

Do you have quite a sensitive sense of smell OP? I can't say I'm aware of what passers by smell like!

NonArtArseHouse · 14/02/2026 11:12

Mumsnetters hate fabric conditioner 😆

Most hate perfume.

I commute on the tube in London daily and I can tell you, a whiff of fabric conditioner is most welcome compared to the stench of unwashed clothes/hair and bad breath I encounter regularly.

Coffeeishot · 14/02/2026 11:14

A whiff of scent boosters has to be better than damp coat or BO ?

Too bloody right. There is no polite way to say this but I work in the public sector and some people I have dealings with are swathed in a virtually visible fug of weed smoke, cigarette smoke, unwashed clothes, unwashed bodies, unwashed hair, stinking sweaty shoes and occasionally stale urine. I have every sympathy for those who struggle with daily life, but my God sometimes we are reeling with the smells. Wafts of Lenor would be heaven.

I once read on here that a "clean smell" was best ! What even is that ?

Disturbia81 · 14/02/2026 11:16

I love it. I love it when people make an effort instead of smelling grim.

OMG yes and stale garlic/spicy foods being sweated through the pores.

Not sure why MNetters recently have a problem with fabric softener smells.

But I suppose at least they're leaving dogs alone 🤣

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/02/2026 11:17

Must say I do wonder why anyone buys the ‘scent boosters’ they’re endlessly advertising on TV.

They're nice for bedding

This.
I very occasionally use it on woollens, an eco one with a subtle scent . I don’t use it in my normal washing at all.
When I was pregnant with dd2 there was a lovely woman at toddler group who smelt so strongly of fabric conditioner that it triggered my morning sickness and I had to avoid her, or leave if she was there. Ever since I’ve found the smell of it makes me feel a bit green.

Oh God, yes. I go to the theatre quite often and I was only thinking the other day that I have been lucky lately in not sitting next to, or close enough downwind of, yet another person who stinks. Can spoil the whole experience when you’re having to breath through a scarf wrapped round your face. My luck’s probably running out though - off out tomorrow night, wish me luck 🤞

1000StrawberryLollies · 14/02/2026 11:22

I do use fabric conditioner, but not a strong-smelling one. My clean laundry doesn't really smell of anything tbh.

Exactly this!!!

IceOnTheLake · 14/02/2026 11:23

I've got a strong sense of smell and can smell it on people. Hate it and don't understand why people would want to cover their clothes in a layer of fat. We used to live by a river and the chemical perfume smell from softeners and scent boosters was overwhelming. Awful stuff.

Oblivionnnnn · 14/02/2026 11:23

Oh god no, I hate it. I recently had no washing machine and everything that came back from my mums or MILs was reeking of the stuff, it made the whole house smell. 🤢

PuppyMonkey · 14/02/2026 11:27

I just saw something from Which? on Insta with a woman saying fabric conditioner builds up on your clothes and then stops the detergent from working properly, so you’re better off ditching it because your clothes aren’t going to be properly cleaned.

HudALledrith · 14/02/2026 11:27

I don't really like scent on people - they're usually men reeking of cheap aftershave or women reeking of cheap perfume.

Fabric conditioner has a strange smell and it gives clothes a greasy feel, plus it doesn't wash out. I've returned ebay purchases because they stink the house out.

dudsville · 14/02/2026 11:27

It's a current trend to want to smell of laundry and soap. I haven't embraced it myself but I do like it on others

IceOnTheLake · 14/02/2026 11:28

That's very true. My grandchildren's other grandparents use a lot of fabric conditioner. I can always tell if they're wearing clothes washed by them - the fabrics are slimy to the touch and make our house smell of artificial scents.

Changename12 · 14/02/2026 11:28

I hate it too. We rented a holiday home and there were little bags of scent boosters in the wardrobes. I had to gather them all up and put them in a cupboard.

They're toxic as shit. Inhaling that chemical concoction every night is so bad for you.

Behave 😂 I breath in car fumes and eat and drink microplastics daily. A bit of perfume is not going to tip me over the edge.

HudALledrith · 14/02/2026 11:37

But fabric conditioner stinks and feels slimy. Is it one of those things you either love or hate?

I want my bedclothes to be crisp and clean. It softens after I've gone to bed.
