If I passed you on a narrow path, would I be able to smell fabric softener down wind?

Just been on a walk and struck by how many people you pass don't smell of perfume, instead they smell of eau de lenor
is there something that you do/aspire to? How much of the stuff do you use to make it so strong?
I don't mind it in laundry. Just not my signature scent™️

If you have carpets or upholstered furniture or laminate surfaces in your home you are awash in gases.

I mean, yes, that is the case. But my sofa has been there a good few years in a well ventilated room. And I do need a sofa. So I would still argue that wearing clothes/being in the sheets washed with heavily scented stuff is not good. I mean I literally can't do it, it makes me feel ill.

Screamingabdabz · 15/02/2026 14:46

I would ban them. They turn my stomach when people waft past drenched in the stuff. It’s an ecologically damaging pointless product marketed to the simple minded who think if something smells vaguely perfumy it means it’s clean. It doesn’t.

Agree completely. They smell absolutely horrible, always with an undertone of cigarette smoke/pets/grime.

And yes hideous for the environment.

The ‘Mrs Hinch’ culture is bloody awful, I long for its downfall.

Ponderingwindow · 15/02/2026 14:50

No. I have a diagnosed allergy to the stuff. You won’t find that toxic sludge anywhere near me.

Just passing someone on a narrow path can give me an asthma attack, hives, or both.

It isn’t healthy for anyone. People like me are just the canaries in the coal mine.

i love when people smell of clean laundry. Much prefer it to the bag of dog poo in their hand, the old cigarette or cooking smells, cheap perfume, damp or general mustiness of most people I walk past.

But in my experience the people who use fabric softener use it to cover up those smells. If something is clean, it shouldn’t have to be made to smell clean with artificial fragrance.

NiceCupOfChai · 14/02/2026 13:12

Again, this weird dichotomy of fabric softener or foul stink.

Yes, it’s bizarre. I wash everything at 60 degrees with Ecover, and line dry if it’s not raining. Everything smells lovely and fresh, but not overpowering and cheap.

Jok77 · 15/02/2026 14:53

I haven't used it since I got married- my husband has eczema and it irritates his skin. I also can't wear perfume because it triggers his asthma. Strongest thing you will smell on me is shampoo!

SpigTheFish · 15/02/2026 14:55

No. I dont wear perfume and dont use fabric softener - it ruins fabric.

I cant stand it when i can smell someone, whether that be due to perfume, Lenor or BO.

Sidebeforeself · 15/02/2026 14:58

Plovx · 14/02/2026 11:44

It’s not “a bit” of perfume. If your bedding and clothes are washed in it, it’s a chemical nasty entering your body via your lungs, skin and eyes 24/7.

Ok ..who wants to sit next to Plovx?!

Seriously, I think you are overstating the dangers somewhat. And BO is not a natural smell either .Its a sign of an unwashed body or a potential medical problem.

dailyconniptions · 14/02/2026 18:49

It's way more than a bit! Minimising chemicals we come into contact with is really important. A lot of them are carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting. It's breathE by the way. (Breath rhymes with death.)

Agree. Just because we already have pollutants, doesn't mean we should just add more and more with careless abandon.

Open your windows a lot, wash at 60 degrees minimum, vacuum/dust regularly and you shouldn’t need a ton of products with strong artificial cleaning smells.

KmcK87 · 15/02/2026 15:04

I love smelling other peoples fabric conditioner and always got out my way to tell them they smell nice when I can! I’ve had a few people in work tell me they know when I’ve been in a room as they can faintly smell mine (comfort pure).

I’ve been involved in a thread in here though where those of us who like using it where made to feel like we were the lowest of the low. Apparently vinegar is all that’s needed for your clothes 🙄

Well thats okay foodie some people but if you live in a big city you probably get mor fumes coming in your open windows than fresh air. And we are urged not to wash on 60 degrees routinely now aren’t we ..cos you know ..eco and all that.

I’m being facetious , but my point is we all have to decide which environmental impacts we feel comfortable with - nobody can live an environmentally perfect life.

I think some of the judgements on here about people who use fabric conditioners are a bit extreme

Plasticdreams · 15/02/2026 15:08

It’s called damage limitation.

Skybunnee · 15/02/2026 15:09

I can’t stand the smell of this - also people using too much washing liquid/capsules - I mean a capsule is the required amount for a full load of very dirty clothes/ bedding etc in a hard water area - so a few items having a quick wash are going to stink of chemicals - and that is what these are -chemicals - not attar of roses or air from a seabteeze man made chemicals saturating you and your children’s clothing, bedding , towels - it is madness.

But if I have a full load of not very dirty clothes in a soft water area for example, how do I split a capsule? (I use powder so irrelevant to me, but I’m not sure people can be blamed for one capsule being too much).

Skybunnee · 15/02/2026 15:11

‘! I’ve had a few people in work tell me they know when I’ve been in a room as they can faintly smell mine (comfort pure‘

Errrrr -weren’t they just being tactful ?

Kelz40 · 15/02/2026 15:11

I used to work in a nursery and we would be able to tell a child’s ‘lost’ clothes by their washing powder! 🤣🤣
Personally, I love the smell of it. Smells really clean and fresh and you can tell people wash their clothes and don’t smell of BO or smoke etc… that’s foul! 🤢

PGmicstand · 15/02/2026 15:12

No. I avoid anything heavily scented that'll be close to my skin as it tends to give me eczema flare ups.

bryceQ · 15/02/2026 15:13

I like it when clothes smell of fabric softener. I love strong smells like essential oil blends and am a very fragrant person. You would hate me.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/02/2026 15:14

Those scent boosters are really bad for the washing machine too they're waxy and leave a coating .
I bought an Eco-Egg kit that had some and I had to recycle them, didn't open the, but I didn't want them.

Ecover is the loveliest smelling fabric conditioner .
I don;t use on my DS laundry as he has sensitive skin or towels as it stops them absorbing or DH clothes because he doesn't appreciate them . Grin

Worst smell is damp clothes .

Bridesmaidorexfriend · 15/02/2026 15:16

Yes I imagine I smell of comfort to passersby. My wife uses double the amount and won’t let me do laundry and she doesn’t trust that I will use as much as her - I wouldn’t lol. But I agree there’s worse things to smell of lol

Yes thats my point. Individuals need to decide what level of environmental damage they feel comfortable with - cos everything is damage

Goinggonegone · 15/02/2026 15:19

No. I dont use it because it contains cow and/or sheep fat (not lanolin).

tuvamoodyson · 15/02/2026 15:22

Coffeeishot · 14/02/2026 11:16

I once read on here that a "clean smell" was best ! What even is that ?

I love the smell of my washing after it’s been hung out and blowing in the wind! That’s what I would call a clean smell or a fresh smell…I don’t use fabric conditioner.

Happyjoe · 15/02/2026 15:23

I rarely use fabric softener as most of them are made with lard. Don't see the point in coating my clothes in animal fat! But I would rather smell that than the way some people do smell. Skunk is the one that gets me. Someone will have a joint, walk to the local corner shop and stink the whole shop out. I don't think they realise in their stoned state how much they smell.
