If I passed you on a narrow path, would I be able to smell fabric softener down wind?

Just been on a walk and struck by how many people you pass don't smell of perfume, instead they smell of eau de lenor
is there something that you do/aspire to? How much of the stuff do you use to make it so strong?
I don't mind it in laundry. Just not my signature scent™️

There are worse things to smell of. Be glad it’s not BO.

I think bo smells better than those scented washing products. And is certainly less harmful to inhale.

My friends house, you approach it on foot, and all you can smell (outside!!) is the washing products. Everywhere she and her family of 5 go smells of those products. If my dd sits on their sofa, her hair and clothes smell of it.

by builder, if he works in a room, the washing product scent is there for hours afterwards.

give me bo any day!

If this is true (and I don't believe it is), then this is very very weird.

You'd be happier to sit next to someone on a flight or in the theatre who stank of BO? 👀🤣

GentleSheep · 14/02/2026 11:41

It's horrible stuff that I never use, but can smell it on others' clothes, or rather, the smell enters the room before they do!

ArcticSkua · 14/02/2026 11:12

Do you have quite a sensitive sense of smell OP? I can't say I'm aware of what passers by smell like!

Really do actually!
i've been known to be able to smell people who are around the corner

I love it. I love it when people make an effort instead of smelling grim.

I have no strong opinions on fabric conditioner however I don't think it's an either/or situation. Smell bloody awful or smell very strongly of it.

@Plovx , you have summed it up well.
At least you know what BO is, and everyone agrees it's unpleasant.

Actually I would be happier with BO. In an exam at Uni I was sat behind someone with awful BO for 3 hours. Yes that is truly rank. However I feel sick to the stomach with fabric conditioner and wouldn't be able to sit like that for 3 minutes, let alone 3 hours!

Plovx · 14/02/2026 11:44

MissCooCooMcgoo · 14/02/2026 11:35

Behave 😂 I breath in car fumes and eat and drink microplastics daily. A bit of perfume is not going to tip me over the edge.

It’s not “a bit” of perfume. If your bedding and clothes are washed in it, it’s a chemical nasty entering your body via your lungs, skin and eyes 24/7.

Imicola · 14/02/2026 11:46

No. Makes me itch just to smell it on someone else without wearing it on all my clothes...yeuch. i wear no scents, hopefully i don't stink, I don't think i do!

DappledThings · 14/02/2026 11:53

I have never smelt fabric conditioner or washing powder on anyone. Or smelt it on bedding anywhere I have stayed. Hardly ever smell perfume or aftershave either.

Yes 100% it’s true. For this reason: the washing shite makes me feel sick and my eyes hurt and a headache within seconds/minutes. The BO can just be endured. It’s organic at least.

You are kidding?
I was crossing a dual carriageway at the same time as someone and he stank of aftershave - he was over a metre away from me and this was in traffic fumes.

Honestly. I think I have a really poor sense of smell as I have also never smelt a scented candle. I can when they are unlit if I get right up close but am eternally disappointed with every one I have ever bought that I can't smell anything coming off them when lit.

Must say I do wonder why anyone buys the ‘scent boosters’ they’re endlessly advertising on TV.

They really work.

JLou08 · 14/02/2026 12:04

I love the smell of fabric softener. So do all my family and friends and there's clearly a large market for it. So why when it comes up on MN do most posters hate it? It is odd.

OK! But I still don’t understand the desire to have your laundry smell strongly of artificial scents, rather than just smelling clean?

On Mumsnet the stench of BO, wet dog and unwashed arse cracks is preferable to even the slightest whiff of Lenor. I dread to think what these people smell like!

Wednesdaysotherchild · 14/02/2026 12:10

Not me! But I hate it when I can smell it - the scent beads community need to dial it down.

Same reason anyone buys anything with any scent; shower gel, perfume, candles, cleaning products etc. Because they like the smell. Not everyone likes the same smells but lots of people like the laundry options.

slonestranger · 14/02/2026 12:17

I have this constantly with older family members who insist on fabric conditioner and air fresheners, both of which trigger my asthma.

Yes I would prefer the stink of shit in the bathroom which will dissipate with a window open, to the fug of air freshener which sets of at least 2 of my kids and my own asthma.

I can't say I like the smell of BO on the tube, but it doesn't affect me in the same way as perfume and fabric conditioner.

HudALledrith · 14/02/2026 12:19

@DappledThings , I have a Diptyque one but have never lit it. It smells nice but not overpowering.

People smell differently, and fragrances mask that smell. Even my cats smell different.

BellyPork · 14/02/2026 12:20

Team BO.

HudALledrith · 14/02/2026 12:21

Disturbia81 · 14/02/2026 12:01

They really work.

They work in that they impart a nasty smell on laundry that never seems to wash off.

God, so do I.

These are probably the people honking on public transport, or squished shoulder-to-shoulder in the theatre.

countrygirl99 · 14/02/2026 12:26

A friend gave me an old fleece throw for my dog's bed. It reeked of scent boosters. After 3 washes and leaving on the line for a week it went in the bin as the smell just wouldn't go.
