If I passed you on a narrow path, would I be able to smell fabric softener down wind?

Just been on a walk and struck by how many people you pass don't smell of perfume, instead they smell of eau de lenor
is there something that you do/aspire to? How much of the stuff do you use to make it so strong?
I don't mind it in laundry. Just not my signature scent™️

I love the smell of laundry - especially fabric conditioner. Much nicer than ‘I’ve never had this coat dry cleaned’ or that foul nonenal stench I often detect.

BillyBites · 14/02/2026 13:11

A kid in one of my recent classes smelled of fabric softener. It was lovely. My TA and I used to hover near his table to pin down exactly who it was and we asked him which brand his mum (or dad) used. He thought it was funny and so did his mum next time I saw her. Anyway, it was Bold 2in1.

Again, this weird dichotomy of fabric softener or foul stink.

@Disturbia81 , Because many of us find it much more appealing, we’re all different. I like wearing different perfumes, deodorants, hand creams etc.

Not everybody does. We have been conditioned (pun intended) to believe that we need these things.

I can't stand the smell of scent and it makes me feel sick. I wear an unscented deodorant.
Hand cream is weird because I only know one other person who has said she doesn't like it. She was more vociferous and said she hated it, but if i put some on, I find it feels slimy so I wash it off.

catera · 14/02/2026 13:18

I’m wearing a laundry scented perfume so… yes!

VoltaireMittyDream · 14/02/2026 13:23

I’m no fan of fabric softener / intense washing powder smells.

But IME the people who take the most violent exception to artificial fragrances don’t notice (or even find comforting) strong ‘organic’ smells that are unpleasant to most.

My DH (ASD & vehemently averse to ‘chemicals’ in all forms) will wear the same clothes for days, hates showering, will go weeks without washing his hair, doesn’t notice when the cat litter box needs changing. He angrily denies having any personal smell of his own - possibly because ‘clean’ to him = untainted by chemicals (including soap). He has quite a strong personal smell to the extent that we don’t sleep in the same room anymore - and my mother used to throw away pillowcases he had slept on after we visited because the stench of his unwashed hair couldn’t be washed out.

He thinks I’m insane and mean to suggest there’s an issue. But will complain endlessly about being able to smell soap and shampoo on my brother’s family when they visit.

I think for most people there’s a happy medium somewhere between honking of migraine-inducing fragrances and stinking like a medieval peasant.

HudALledrith · 14/02/2026 13:29

...I’m sure fabric conditioner lovers must smell something very different to what I’m smelling (a bit like the coriander divide, maybe?).
I was thinking of coriander too. Coriander has a soapy taste.

HostaCentral · 14/02/2026 13:30

The worst thing is opening a Vinted packet and being assailed by the sickly sweet smell of a fabric conditioner. Straight in the wash it goes. I used to run the second hand school uniform shop, and when bags came in that had been conditioned, I had to air them outside. The room we used was often to "smelly", with conditioners that it made me gag.

Seriously, I have never used any fabric conditioner or boosters or anti bac. Just wash your clothes with standard wash. They will smell "clean" but not perfumed.

Miranda65 · 14/02/2026 13:31

No, because I never use it. Vile stuff!

That's weird behaviour.

If she's used so much that her child has a chemical trail then she's used too much.

It's perfectly possible to be clean without giving people around you migraines.

DoubleDoubleDown · 14/02/2026 16:02

Oh I love ' smelling ' laundry products. I've just switched up my fabric softener for a new product. It's a purifying Rinse made by Downy (Lenor's N/American cousin). It smells so good even my Teens have noticed.

MissCooCooMcgoo · 14/02/2026 11:35

Behave 😂 I breath in car fumes and eat and drink microplastics daily. A bit of perfume is not going to tip me over the edge.

It's way more than a bit! Minimising chemicals we come into contact with is really important. A lot of them are carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting. It's breathE by the way. (Breath rhymes with death.)

HudALledrith · 14/02/2026 19:09

And where do the chemicals we use go - into the water system.

Toxic Chemicals in Laundry Detergents

muddyford · 14/02/2026 19:17

No, because I haven't used it. You may get a waft of my perfume though.

Are you receiving treatment for your anxiety?

NoYourNameChanged · 14/02/2026 19:26

It seems, on mumset, not using fabric softener is on a par with having a very cheap wedding, never EVER using americanisms and pretending not to know who a single celebrity is…
Personally I do use fabric softener, but it must be sparingly as my clothes certainly aren’t slimy to touch (seriously? How much are people using?!). It seems to help my son’s eczema prone skin, albeit I have to be very choosy on what brand etc. I don’t think there’s a very strong smell. I think the strong smells are more likely to be the scent boosters you can buy. I’m not a fan, but to each their own. As has been said, better than fusty BO!

Meadowfinch · 14/02/2026 19:28

No. It's vile stuff, I never buy it because it stinks.

shhblackbag · 14/02/2026 19:40

I don't use it. But I'll take fabric softener over people's BO on public transport! Some people really don't seem to wash properly.

StedSarandos · 14/02/2026 19:47

Eeew, no. Smelly fabric conditioner or cheap perfume make me think people and their houses are dirty.

WhatEvenIsMyPassword · 14/02/2026 19:54

...it should be possible to wash yourself and your clothes and not have BO and also not have an unpleasant perfumy smell? On the same note, why not just clean your house - why add in stinky candles and stinky sticks?

ThiagoJones · 14/02/2026 19:58

You’re lucky, most people I pass in public smell of BO or unwashed clothes.

LetticeProtheroe · 14/02/2026 19:58

I work with the public and vile smelling folks all day. I'd rather that than someone who stinks of wash powder/fabric conditioner. The stinky just stink but the laundry smell gives me migraines and makes me feel physically ill. I love perfume and scents in general but something about laundry chemicals is especially toxic.

I guess we’re all different. I can cope with laundry smells but unwashed clothes/BO/bad breath etc makes me retch. It’s the reason I don’t use public transport!

HopSpringsEternal · 14/02/2026 20:06

It is possible to be clean and not smell and also not reek of fabric conditioner.or perfume. That is the optimum for me as perfume gives me a migraine, fabric condition makes me feel a bit nauseous as does BO.

MoiraPlunkett · 14/02/2026 20:09

No, we use those all in one things so no strong fabric conditioner smell. I don't mind the smell of fabric conditioner on others, though.
