Job application support thread

I’ve been looking and applying since September. I had one job offer but the conditions were not great so I declined it. I’m really struggling now, applications take so long and I’m not being shortlisted, I used to get shortlisted for pretty much everything I applied for!
anyone else also losing the will to live?

I had an interview this week with 5 competency based questions. I had prepared and could think of examples for each, but think I waffled too much / not succinct or relevant enough. I keep kicking myself. Will find out next week.

Competency based interviews are tough! Try not to beat yourself up. Often how we sound in our own heads is much worse than how it sounds to the person listening! Best of luck. Fingers crossed for you!! 🤞🏼

Hello! I see no one has posted for a while but I saved this thread from when it was more active as I am also on the job hunt. I have been applying for a bunch every couple of weeks. Yesterday I applied for 6 jobs (!) let’s hope the interview offers come piling in!! Posting for solidarity and to reignite this chat to support others in the same position ❤️

Welcome and good luck

Joining as I am entering the fray - currently freelance but have been part-time while studying. Degree is done now so ideally I would find a nice little stress-free part-time job to run alongside the freelance work (which I like, but don’t want to do any more of because it’s very stressful and means being away a lot). So far I have applied for three, one rejected after interview, one rejected before interview and waiting to hear from the other one but it’s been a week so losing hope there.

I’ve found a few more to apply for, aiming to get two in today, two tomorrow and two more next week. Such a bloody faff, figuring out what they want 🤦‍♀️
Good luck to everyone 💪

Just an update. I was applying through a social service employment service as I had mental health issues. Had an adviser assigned. Started in Feb. Got a part time admin job last month, first interview I’d had for ages. So don’t give up hope. There are jobs out there.

From my experience, apply apply apply! Maybe approach companies you’d like to work for, places like NHS are cutting down on admin staff so that’s a no go.

For me you need to practice these with a friend. That’s what I did. Go over them so you know them inside out. Consider something like Bach Rescue Remedy for nerves.

Yes, that’s going to be my approach. Unfortunately there are only so many applications I can fit in around existing work but I will keep on top of it and it’s not super urgent. The trouble I find is that you have to have a level of investment in a role to make the application good, but then it is disappointing to be ghosted. I had some shockingly bad feedback after the one I interviewed for, so that helped, definitely dodged a bullet there.

TurquoiseDreamCatcher · 09/05/2026 14:03

I had an interview earlier in the week and wasn’t successful, I had really prepped for it too!

I’ve sent off another two applications now. It’s so stressful and soul destroying!

Sorry to hear this, I totally get this it’s so bloody tough when you’ve put so much energy into prepping.

Good luck with the other applications- something will come up, it’s just really hard out there right now.

noonames · 10/05/2026 19:12

I have sent in four this weekend (well three and one nearly done), it’s all I’ve done, so tedious and I bet I never hear anything back.

PinkPomeloFruit · 11/05/2026 08:38

@noonames good luck
It Is incredibly time consuming!!

I had an email to say I wasn’t short listed for one of the jobs. Damn co-pilot told me I was a good fit and got my hopes up!

I am finding it so hard to find a part time job. I’ve emailed a few places to ask if they would consider the jobs as a part time or job share and they said no.

PinkPomeloFruit · 03/06/2026 23:06

How’s everyone doing?

So frustrating isn’t it when you know there is likely to be someone else who would happily job share with you. I still haven’t found anything.

My DBro was looking for months for an entry level role before deciding to go back to university for a masters. When he graduated the second time, he used a website that he uploaded his CV to and it scored him against live job listings online, showing him which ones were the best matches. He generated cover letters through it, which he then added to himself so they were much more personalised. It also reviewed his CV for improvements and gave him somewhere to keep track of all his applications. He's in work now but he had to move areas. www.getflint.work/

I was offered two job interviews (yay!) and then rejected after both (boo!). Now feeling disheartened before I have to pull up my socks for the next round of applications. Been considering starting something up myself - but may just be trying to avoid the constant rejection of reams of applications!

I hear you.

I am in the same position, I feel so down hearted at the moment.

PinkPomeloFruit · 04/06/2026 19:58

I’ve been rejected by an amazing job. I got to the final round and honestly thought I had it in the bag. So hard to keep going.

@WhyWouldSomeoneDoThat I also am considering trying some freelance work or setting up my own thing. I’ve been reading job descriptions for corporate places (I’m in public sector) and my heart just sinks. I just don't have any enthusiasm.

I hear you @PinkPomeloFruit , I’m looking for public sector and commercial jobs that come up just aren’t my cup of tea. I was applying for anything that I could vaguely imagine myself doing after so many rejections as I was feeling a bit desperate. But after these last interviews I’ve realised that I don’t want to apply for jobs that I don’t want to work in. It’s made me reassess my priorities.

consultancy or freelance might be an option in the interim between jobs? Especially if there are low overheads in setting up…

I had this happen too. I asked for feedback as they said did I want any. I said yes! Honestly it was one of the best interviews I’d done. Basically it was nothing I did. It was just that someone else they interviewed must have mentioned that they had a bit more experience in something that the interviewer said they didn’t even realise until this person mentioned it, that would be helpful for their company. So I wasn’t even asked about it much! He said if he had had to pick another person to go to the second round it would have been me. So annoying but glad I didn’t imagine it had gone well

PinkPomeloFruit · 12/06/2026 03:54

I’ve had a little break from job applications the past couple of weeks. So exhausting being in this cycle. I had a first stage interview over two weeks ago (online) and although I don’t have much interest in the job I’ve heard nothing since. It’s just rude! I took time to prepare.

OP posts:
WhyWouldSomeoneDoThat · 12/06/2026 07:39

I’ve had a break after being turned down after three interviews a couple of weeks ago too. Now I’m ready to start applying again. I was looking at applying through agencies yesterday. Does anyone have any experience of that?

fashionqueen0123 · 12/06/2026 07:54

Had another rejection for a job I could probably do with my eyes shut. I think there are just hundreds applying for everything. And the ones I’ve managed to get an interview for out of hundreds I’ve then been pipped to the post when I’ve go to the final couple of people. So fed up of this now. I’ll probably take a break over the summer.

PinkPomeloFruit · 12/06/2026 11:15

@fashionqueen0123 that sucks! @WhyWouldSomeoneDoThat i tend to avoid recruitment agencies at all costs!!
