Why do people pronounce turmeric as tewmeric?

It's got an 'r' in it. It's tur-mur-ic.

I've always wondered the same thing.

It’s got a yew in it as well, to be fair. But I agree, it’s more like turkey than Tuesday.

I didn't realise there was an r when I first heard about it.

Now I know I keep forgetting.

I’m not sure. Maybe ask my in-laws who call ibuprofen ‘iburofen’

I pronounce it ‘tew’ as that’s what I’ve been taught, the same thing with most things for most people I guess

I've never heard anyone pronounce it like that.

But haven't you ever looked at the jar and wondered why you're saying it like that when there's an r in the word?

The chef at one of my old work places told me she used canyon pepper in the chilli I complimented. (I couldn't stand me so i was trying to be nice). I said I hadn't heard of that to which she sneeringly replied "I wouldn't have expected you to, you're not a chef"

I always thought turmeric was pronounced tuwmeric as that's what I'd heard others call it. Until I actually paid attention to the word written down!

Don't let it annoy you. Saying it wrong doesn't change how it tastes.

It has no standard pronunciation really so I think both are prolly correct might be a rhotic r thing
Most countries call it something thay sounds like curcuma
Indians call it haldi

What?! They must be so thick. It's plastered all over the cards everywhere. Do they think the saint is saint valentime? The stupidity of some people is breathtaking.

An ex colleague said "theo-saurus" another says can-door (should be candour like panda) and far too many colleagues say "new-monic" (should be mnemonic like demonic). 🙄

For a while I thought they were 2 different things as I couldn't see how something spelt turm could be said tewm

Even a celebrity chef called it tew-meric on TV a few weeks ago. I shouted at the screen.

Probably pronounced by the same people who say chewsday (Tuesday).

It was tewmeric in tbe 80s. We sometimes used it to flavour kwin-oy-ah. 😃

He say yo-gert so I don't believe a word he says.
