It's got an 'r' in it. It's tur-mur-ic.

So annoying.

Cultures that actually cook with turmeric pronounce it as TUR-meric.

Depends on your accent. Candour and panda rhyme in my accent (southern English)

Same for me too.

Candour, panda, Amanda all rhyme for me.

Chat GTP says TUR is American and TUE is British RP pronunciation.

What is ChatGTP? Do you mean ChatGPT, in which case that is wrong as well.

Merriam-Webster is an American dictionary.

Merriam-Webster, that peerless Massachusetts guardian of the King’s English since 1843 😄

Lol
My point is that I don't really see why it matters when its "proper" name is haldi or curcuma longa containing curcumins.
Hence most countries calling it a derivative of that.
Turmeric is a random name choice imo and interesting.
I've read just now it's possibly from a French translation?

Wasn't it John Torode who started the tewmeric nonsense?

Yep.

Turmeric = TewMERic

Pasta = PAHsta

Greg Wallace = my friend oh no he’s just my co-presenter oh no shit oh no I didn’t see anything honest Sir Rod I was out of the room

Brufen is a brand name of it, so a bit of a mash-up I'm guessing.

My MIL always said that and it used to irritate me no end!

My (German born) mum used to pronounce it tewmeric. This pre-dates John Torode. Maybe that how they pronounce it in Germany?

He definitely didn't start it. But he was the first TV personality to annoy people with it.

Except the German for turmeric is Kurkuma

Haha that’s not even close!!!!

But haven't you ever looked at the jar and wondered why you're saying it like that when there's an r in the word?

To be fair, if you pronounced things based on how they looked, for the English language, you’d probably be assumed to have some kind of issue.

MarvtheMartian · 02/02/2026 22:29

Jaffalemons · 02/02/2026 22:21

I think it’s often used by nurses.

whattheysay · 02/02/2026 22:30

TroysMammy · 02/02/2026 21:56

Probably pronounced by the same people who say chewsday (Tuesday).

I say chewsday I have a London accent, although I don’t think I’ve heard anyone pronounce it differently, I don’t hear anyone pronounce the T like tewsday

WrigglyDonCat · 02/02/2026 22:31

I have always assumed in was a mistake some made because (especially in serifed font or cursive handwriting) the first r and m could easily visually blend into one another.

Once the mistake is out there, if you hear tewmeric before you see turmeric (see how the r blends...), you are very likely to just overlook the r as your brain thinks tumeric makes sense with what it has previously heard.

Emptynester2 · 02/02/2026 22:02

There are too many of these to mention. I mean, “a panini”, for starters. “I’ll have a panini and an expresso please.”

What is wrong with that? Notwithstanding your hopefully deliberate misspelling mistake of espresso, it’s grammatically correct for an English speaker assuming they are ordering from a menu.

Nottodaty · 02/02/2026 22:36

Garage - the way my husband pronounces it, is different in the way the majority of other people do.

Other than MiL, Katie Allsopp is the only other person I heard pronounce it the same way.

Not even sure who is right or wrong but I blame it on the ‘r’.

Bowcup · 02/02/2026 22:37

soupyspoon · 02/02/2026 22:12

I say chewmerick and always have.

And will continue to.

Yes yes

Happyjoe · 02/02/2026 22:37

I was corrected the other day for saying aytch for the letter, "oh you mean haitch!"
I found it highly amusing and shared with my other half as the mispronunciation of H is like nails down a blackboard for him.

tiredlazydoesntmatter · 02/02/2026 22:38

Any pronunciation doesn’t really matter as long as people understand what they are saying ! My Father was a BBC journalist many years ago and was very well known for his clipped BBC accent . He was a lovely man who never judged people by their voice ,diction etc .
I have three children and their accents, vocabulary vary wildly!

Blueuggboots · 02/02/2026 22:39

I have one thing to say to you all…QUINOA. If you are meant to pronounce quinoa as keenwah, then tumeric? Who knows???
