It's got an 'r' in it. It's tur-mur-ic.

So annoying.

I was corrected the other day for saying aytch for the letter, "oh you mean haitch!"
I found it highly amusing and shared with my other half as the mispronunciation of H is like nails down a blackboard for him.

Edited

Except hatch is correct in some dialects.

Bit rude though to correct your mispronunciation.

It’s got a yew in it as well, to be fair. But I agree, it’s more like turkey than Tuesday.

No, it hasn't. It's got two er sounds.

You wouldn't say "Yewmbrella" just because there's a letter U there, would you?

OvernightBloats · 02/02/2026 22:50

The way Professor Alice Roberts (from Digging for Britain) says house really makes me cringe. She says, "Hice" not house. She seems to say hice a lot as well - I feel like throwing the remote at the tele and shouting it's HOUSE not HICE!

Fulmine · 02/02/2026 22:52

It's because idiots like John Torode say Chewmeric. But then, he always used to bang on about people "cooking for Greg and I", so we should all have known better than to copy him.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 02/02/2026 22:53

The people who say ecksetera for et cetera drive me nuts.

And talking of nuts, it’s not all-mond, it’s ah-mond

It's what people in some dialects say, but it is still incorrect.

thatsthatsaidthemayor · 02/02/2026 22:54

I know it’s wrong but I learnt from parents who were not educated. I try to remember. Mispronunciation (as mispronounciation) drives me around the bend though

No, it's not incorrect.

I could equally argue that the pronunciation of drawing, where they throw an extra r in after the w, is incorrect, but I recognise there are different dialects and accents in the English language. Claiming otherwise is simply ignorant and/or arrogant.

soupyspoon · 02/02/2026 23:03

I acktchually started a thread about celery ACK. John T says this as well. And so does that Marcus Waring.

I cant stand it

No one replied to the thread anyway.

LamentableShoes · 02/02/2026 23:05

Don't get me started on cardamon vs cardamom...

I think the lesson from this is never to pronounce anything in the same way as John Torode

I’m not sure. Maybe ask my in-laws who call ibuprofen ‘iburofen’

That drives me fucking insane, there seems to be lots of people that call it ‘ibrufen’ WHY?
To me it’s like calling paracetamol ‘pemol’ just use the correct word and then we all understand each other.

CharlotteCChapel · 02/02/2026 23:30

You don't say Wednesday as wed nes day. It's the same sort of thing although I do call it turmeric my DH says tew mer ic

NewGirlInTown · 02/02/2026 23:31

I blame John Torode. He is renowned for his incorrect pronunciation.

It is incorrect. You can look it up, look at the etymology, it's been aitch for centuries.

HeddaGarbled · 02/02/2026 23:35

Some people haven’t had your educational and parental advantages: get over it.

He called turmeric "ibufen"?
Why?

😂

ShowmetheMapletree · 02/02/2026 23:37

Choo-mer-ic anyone?

An ex colleague said "theo-saurus" another says can-door (should be candour like panda) and far too many colleagues say "new-monic" (should be mnemonic like demonic). 🙄

Can-dur -it’s got an r at the end.
panda doesn’t.

It’s the same sound in accents that don’t pronounce the “r” at the end of words.

I am actually crying at this thread 😆 l

How often are you discussing mnemonics?

TeaRoseTallulah · 02/02/2026 23:53

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 02/02/2026 22:13

Depends on your accent. Candour and panda rhyme in my accent (southern English)

Mine too.

NotYoCheese · 02/02/2026 23:54

DH has pompadoms with his curry… after 30 years I’ve given up trying to say anything.

Noshadelamp · 02/02/2026 23:54

All the people criticising John Torrode do realise he's Australian, right? And Australians have a different accent, pronunciation and even grammar ( eg "Greg and I").
