Just that. Interested to see if anyone says what I'm thinking...

Cherbourg. Bleak, rainy, depressing, the only good thing was the Auchan centre commercial we found on the outskirts of the city as we couldn't seem to find our way from where we parked by the port into the city so gave up, we were only there as we were getting a ferry the next day as ours from St Malo got cancelled, so the long drive there didn't help. We passed through there in the 90s and it was pretty much the same if I remember.

Cherbourg is a town, not a city. Don't know how you couldn't find you way into town from the port - it is literally a 5 minute walk! There are lots of lovely shops too - supermarkets, department stores, patisseries, antiques, etc. I do agree about the weather unless you are very lucky!

I can kind of understand, @Statsquestion2 - I haven't been to Iceland because to me a landscape with no trees is pretty desolate, no mater how impressive the geology.

Norway, on the other hand - I was happy just to look around me. Absolutely stunning. Add in the whales and the aurora and it was pretty much perfect.

ICanBuyMyOwnFlowers · 26/01/2026 18:35

@Statsquestion2 Fair enough.

DearLurker · 26/01/2026 18:35

Canaries: barren and just grim
Brussels: business centre, no character, gross food

Every UK Christmas Market I have ever been too, and I have been to a lot....

Yeah it's all homemade or overpriced tat in sheds, overpriced food and beer, and always the pick and mix sweet stall that's overpriced with questionable quality sweets as well. The Bath one one year was the ultimate in boredom.
I dunno if the October continental market in Leicester is still going but £10 for little bag of biscuits? We'd normally go to France in October anyways back then, but....!!!!

I can't help wondering what it was that you expected to find at Stonehenge besides the ring of 'standing stones' that everyone knows that's all it is! 🙄 What else did you think might happen that might entertain you and why did you even go there in the first place? FFS! 🤔

Thanks for your interest in my trip to Stonehenge.

I was 13 and my dad decided we'd go there on a day trip whilst holidaying at Butlins Minehead. It was a 4 hour round trip.

There's lots of places I've been where I had low expectations but have been pleasantly surprised. This was not one of them and so remains, at the age of 43, the most boring place I've visited.

Do let me know if there's anymore detail you need.

Hampton court palace, extremely underwhelming.

This. So much.
Expectation: awe and mystery. Echoes of ancient civilisation.
Reality: parting with lots of cash for a short walk from a large parking lot to stare at a pile of non descript stones from some distance away in light drizzle and freezing wind along with many other tourists in pac a macs. The end.

I feel the same about the pyramids of Giza. So disappointed 😞. It had been on my bucket list for years. The sphinx was beautiful though. Luxor was stunning!

ensayers · 26/01/2026 18:43

"boring"is subjective to an individuals opinions and interests, there are people that still wouldnt be bored sat in a traffic jam for two hours, and that probably includes me, however stick me in Venice and i just cant wait to leave.
It appears i have little interest in blown glass and smelly canals!

Pliudev · 26/01/2026 18:45

Stuttgart. My son and grandsons live there now. My visit only livened up when I accidently got locked inside an exhibition of head ache making abstract paintings. Once I was released, it was back to the vanilla streets. It's like Plymouth without the sea if you see what I mean.

Vivianebrooksmatsumoto · 26/01/2026 18:46

Gloucester. Less a city, more a town. Boiling hot day and everything seemed to close at 5 which I wouldn't have thought the case for a city. Before anybody mentions the cathedral, I went there as a kid and it's probably the only interesting thing there.

Suffolk.

Could you please spread the word that Suffolk is boring, the fewer bloody tourists the better.😀

An ex once took me to a Porsche Owners Club event. Christ on a bike, dozens of mind numbingly dull men discussing braking systems and turbos. 😂

😂😂This made me laugh! Been in similar situation. I ended up sitting in the car listening to a play on Radio 4 while he dreamed about owning a classic car-not going to happen mate!

I do wish MN would bring back the laugh emoji

Yeah Berlin is very bland, as cities go.

Now that really is a you problem. There are all sorts of things you can accuse Berlin of - dirty, yup, rude locals, absolutely, filthy weather in February, very much so. But it is not, and has never been, bland and boring. It’s true that it’s not the right holiday for certain kinds of people though. Whenever people criticize Berlin we suggest they fuck off to Munich where things are a bit more toy-towny.

I live in Bath and would totally agree - in fairness I think the Xmas market was much better before we left the EU - we got much more variety , very complicated to do now for not enough profit for the ‘small people’

Lincslady53 · 26/01/2026 18:50

I find it incredible people find cities like Rome or Berlin boring. DH has a thing about the Plantagents, so we often visit, what I call, a pile of stones. But, if you know the history, and have a good imagination the pile of stones can be fascinating. Pontefract Castle, case in point. Now just ruins, but up to the Civil War was an important, strategic base. Richard 2nd was left in a dungeon to starve to death there. Rome is full of history, one of the centres of European civilisation fir centuries.

If you leave Butlins & go into Minehead it's a rather nice little town. There's also Exmoor on the other side of the town.

However, I agree about Butlins. Took DCs there for a day about 40 years ago. DH was so bored & tired from working, he just went to sleep in a chair. I was left trying to distract the DCs from things that cost extra (which was just about everything) & having to run around after 3 excited youngsters. DH & me had a huge row in the car on the way home as I tackled him about leaving me to deal with the DCs while he just slept, he saying that he worked 80+ hours a week to support us, me pointing out that, not only did I work, but I did all domestic tasks...I'm sure that you can imagine how that conversation went.

Haven't read all of this thread but would be shocked if Dublin wasn't already mentioned. Makes Reading look like Paris, New York and Tokyo rolled into one. Literally nothing to do or see - their main attractions being some random woman in a fountain and an old book should have been a warning.

Most of Ireland in fact.

FKAT · 26/01/2026 19:00

I'm going to add Melbourne as well. Very nice but dull as fuck.

Iceland…very underwhelming unfortunately

I bloody loved Iceland, went Christmas time and it was absolutely magical. Not sure it’d be as impressive in the summer, quite a bleak landscape without the snow
