Things you'd forgotten about

String art.

Remember those pictures that hung on walls in the 70s/80s (? I'm guessing)
They usually had a black background and coloured string making geometric type patterns.
I had totally forgotten (most probably for the best 😂) that they had ever existed until I looked through some photo albums at my auntie's house.

Anything else of that ilk you can recall?

My friends Nan loved those string art pictures!

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2026 13:53

Clocks that had spikes out the sides to make it look like a sun!

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 23/01/2026 13:58

Crochet dollies to cover spare loo rolls.

These things were commonplace and usually the kind of thing older family members had from what I recall. As well as Royal Doulton ladies on the mantelpiece.

That Jeremy Beadle is dead

British bulldog
(game, not the dog)

Saw it mentioned somewhere recently and had completely forgotten about this playground game

Antimacassars on sofas and arm chairs and doilies under ornaments!

Iknowdino · 23/01/2026 14:01

Eternal Beau everything: dinner service, clocks, glasses, tablecloths, curtains.
Horse brasses
Crying Lady picture

I have a small white dollie. Only the one and I like how it protects the wood on the coffee table. They are useful.
A lot of these things were invented and used in order to protect the furniture years ago , once someone bought a sofa , it lasted years and years due to anti macassars etc.

Bulldog was banned at ds2’s primary for being too rough! It could get a bit hairy at times

ClawedButler · 23/01/2026 14:06

Coloured toilet paper.

It's like we all agreed to stop making and using it, and to never mention it again.

CharliesAngles · 23/01/2026 14:06

My uncle also had those sea shell car seat covers, my cousins hated them!

@fishfingerbutty what is the crying lady picture?

Shops being shut on Sundays

rainbowunicorn22 · 23/01/2026 14:07

My friend's mum did those string pictures, lots of them, guitars, carriages, all sorts
mantlepiece coverings like a long piece of fabric with pom poms hanging down
that and a mirror above the fireplace, great fire hazard. My aunt had her skirt catch on fire while she was doing her hair over the fireplace. luckily my mum was there, she grabbed her and rolled her on the rug, so minimal damage to my aunt.
those thick chenille table cloths again with pom poms which seemed to be a thing
i thought my one aunt was posh as she had wood panelling on the walls and one of those tea dispenser bit like an optic in a pub
mums friend had all lloyd loom furniture now i did think they were very posh

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2026 14:08

I used to like the pale pink loo rolls.
You sometimes see patterned loo paper in m and s , but it’s rare now to see any colour but white.

I made one of these in primary school! It's probably still in my parents' attic somewhere.

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2026 14:10

It was strange going shopping on a Sunday wasn’t it! Sunday was the boring day, only the paper shop opened up our way and shut at one.
Suddenly we could go out 10 till 4 for actual shopping!
It really was a big deal and a big debate how it was ‘ the thin edge of the wedge ‘ ! Lol

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2026 14:11

Elvis mirrors ! They really were tacky.

Are you my MIL? 😄
She loves a patterned toilet paper, and kitchen roll!

I remember friends houses having brass knick knacks (what are they called?)
by their bare brick fireplaces.

Half day closing of shops on Wednesday and those metal ornaments of swings, seesaws, etc.

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2026 14:14

I do like patterns on kitchen rolls! It looks pretty.
I blame IKEA early 90s as they said ‘ chuck out your dollies’ and people did ( along with pale pink toilet rolls and brass on the walls )

CharliesAngles · 23/01/2026 14:15

Our local shops used to close on a Wednesday afternoon too, back in the days when there used to be separate butchers, bakers and candlestick makers greengrocers.

Half day closing ! Most hairdressers don’t open on Mondays , which I find very reassuring tbh. At least it makes up for working Saturdays, but maybe the actual hairdressers don’t agree ..
