Things you'd forgotten about

String art.

Remember those pictures that hung on walls in the 70s/80s (? I'm guessing)
They usually had a black background and coloured string making geometric type patterns.
I had totally forgotten (most probably for the best 😂) that they had ever existed until I looked through some photo albums at my auntie's house.

Anything else of that ilk you can recall?

These soup bowls, free with petrol 😊

We have 2 of these! They are great as they have a handle and are just the perfect size for a full tin.

Nicecatneighbour · 23/01/2026 17:13

In the 70s my mum had an orange plastic three tiered fountain that you put water in and plugged in. It lit up, and the water cascaded over the tiers. There were plastic lilies floating in the bottom tier. I suppose it was sold as a sort of room humidifier.
I just remember her setting it up, and my dad rolling his eyes. 🙄

My gran (Dad's mum) had those. She crocheted the dresses for them herself. She also had one of those ashtrays on a long stand beside the loo. So classy, so 70s. 😂

My grandad had a stand ashtray. Also an outside toilet.

I knew someone who had a huge Eternal Beau china collection and she always made me chuckle because she couldn't pronounce it.

She called it Eternal B.O.

😂

Edited

Eternal B.O. 🤣

That stuff was everywhere!

Wade Whimsies, those little porcelain animal figurines. My grandma had dozens of the damned things all over her living room. Must have been hell to dust!

It was a thing to give these as presents when I was in junior school; getting those little boxes was so exciting.

Musicmummy63 · 23/01/2026 17:17

When going on the Internet used your landline, so you couldn't make a call while online and vice versa.
When you used to get 2 films for your money at the cinema, the main one and some random other short film that no one really cared about.
Black and white telly.

Those soup bowls are genius!
They remind me of those ceramic dishes that had recipes printed onto them

Right.
Brace yourself for this next one...

Wolf fleeces.

Does anyone want to admit to ever owning one 😂

I've always wondered why wolves in particular?
Can anyone enlighten me?

Does anyone remember these?

Oh yes! My grandma had one!

meatyryvita · 23/01/2026 17:29

When TV would just finish for the night and you'd get the picture of the little girl with toys in front of a small blackboard!

The test card! That ragdoll thing freaked me out. Evil looking little shit. 😱

YelramBob · 23/01/2026 17:34

In 30 years' time there will be a similar thread somewhere:

Remember when people used to 'stream' music?

Remember Sky TV?

Remember supermarkets when you had to drive to the actual shop and go round with a trolley?

Remember schools where you had to drop your kids off in the morning and collect them in the afternoon?

CharliesAngles · 23/01/2026 17:38

@YelramBob And

Remember there was this thing called Mumsnet… 😉

Well, it was used in The Omen, so...🤷‍♀️

It was used in The Exorcist.

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2026 17:39

About ten years ago I went to a market in a large park and a lot of the stalls had jackets and tops and fleeces with wolves on them, mostly in grey or navy.

Aah that reminds me of my friends parents who talked about "clocking in" at work.

I worked at a job 2 years ago that had card clock in/out

Thesuperlativesistillloveyou · 23/01/2026 17:46

Those pictures night shore scene with a birds wings and half naked woman standing on the cusp of the wing..70s.

Spirit of the wolf still exists.

For you, just to freak you out Grin

Linkie fail, I love that music anyway! Same as I love horror films so long as they're not too gory - chills rather than (blood) spills.

There used to be a long running thread (or series of threads) on MN called the ‘wolef’ threads where people shared photos of wolf jacket sightings. It was fun but I think MNHQ put a stop to it because of privacy or some such.

I used to think my grandma's Royal Doulton lady (it was called something like "Autumn Winds") was the most wonderful thing ever. I think we gave her the miniature version of it for Christmas or a birthday once.

@fishfingerbutty I used to know a girl who started collecting Eternal Beau china from when she was about 16 for when she got married and had her own home. She and her mum used to look at catalogues and save up for pieces, it was weird....

That Eternal Beau crockery, my friend had the full set when she got a new flat in the 90's. I thought it was a bit boring but I was still envious she could splash out like that, my crockery was mix & match cast offs from my mum & gran!

I would love a full set of blue Willow pattern crockery, but I'd only break it, so stick to cheapie stuff that's easily replaced.
