Things you'd forgotten about

String art.

Remember those pictures that hung on walls in the 70s/80s (? I'm guessing)
They usually had a black background and coloured string making geometric type patterns.
I had totally forgotten (most probably for the best 😂) that they had ever existed until I looked through some photo albums at my auntie's house.

Anything else of that ilk you can recall?

Very much like that!!! It’s not the exact one but I remember the Tina painting too!

MissyB1 · 23/01/2026 14:59

Those charity collection boxes in the figure of a girl with her leg in a brace.

Taking the empties back to the off licence for pennies.

Cans of shandy bass.

OMG. Tween/teenage me used to make loads of those in the 1970's. I also had a Plasticraft kit and made plaques, paperweight and keyrings with shells and sea creatures in which I could buy with my pocket money at the shell shop in town. I can still remember the smell of the molton plastic now.

I love this.

My mum still has a kitten ornament made up of tiny sea shells. I think it was bought from Alton Towers in the mid 80s.

Moving from silk cut purple to blue to white to 'be healthier' in the 90s

Edible cigarettes for kids.

Clocks that had spikes out the sides to make it look like a sun!

They're called a Starburst clock and cost a small fortune for an original one now!! I love mid-century and have my eye on one but its £300!!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 23/01/2026 15:07

People knowing (and caring) about other people's schedules. Like my Mum not ringing my aunt because Coronation street was on although she needed to talk to her.

catinateacup · 23/01/2026 15:09

That particular pale green china that used to be in church halls, schools, etc. - and stainless steel teapots. And mugs made out of smoked grey/brown glass.

Those egg-cups that were like a boat with the egg holder in the middle.

Yes to horse brasses on people’s walls and the gold string pictures! There was one of those pictures on my wall at my nursery school - at three years old I was absolutely fascinated by the way that it looks like there are curves but all the threads are actually straight and held in with pins.

I used to think my grandma's Royal Doulton lady (it was called something like "Autumn Winds") was the most wonderful thing ever. I think we gave her the miniature version of it for Christmas or a birthday once.

@fishfingerbutty I used to know a girl who started collecting Eternal Beau china from when she was about 16 for when she got married and had her own home. She and her mum used to look at catalogues and save up for pieces, it was weird....

I knew someone who had a huge Eternal Beau china collection and she always made me chuckle because she couldn't pronounce it.

She called it Eternal B.O.

😂

M&S and John Lewis not accepting credit cards.

You had to either get a store card or pay debt/cash

Silverbirchleaf · 23/01/2026 15:27

Hitchhikers. Although you do see the occasional person by the side of the road, you don’t get teenagers hitching back to university, for example. . Probably a good thing.

I can still see my mum making this and hanging it in the front room.

Taking rolls of film to the chemist to be developed, before postal film developing took off. I was explaining to DGS9 that we couldn’t edit or delete photos, and just had to hope the prints included some worth keeping!

Mansionscoldandgrey · 23/01/2026 15:39

Does anyone remember these?

Those magnetic soap holders that looked a bit like a third tap coming out of the wall. You stuck a little metal disc into your bar of soap and then attached it to the holder! It was actually very practical. My grandparents had one in all of their bathrooms/toilets. 😂

BitOutOfPractice · 23/01/2026 15:49

CharliesAngles · 23/01/2026 14:30

And then hang up before the hour was up!

Remember phone boxes where you actually had to use coins!!
We had graduated to phonecards when I went to uni and called home once a week from the phone student union bar!

Put another 2p (2p!!!) in when the pips went!

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 23/01/2026 15:49

Wade Whimsies, those little porcelain animal figurines. My grandma had dozens of the damned things all over her living room. Must have been hell to dust!

My mum still has one of those in her guest bathroom! God knows why as she has handwash in a dispenser 🤔 The rest of her house does resemble that Ikea 'Chuck out your chintz' advert from years ago though 😅

@YourWinter ah yes the excitement of picking up your photos from the chemist only to find half of them were blurred 😭😂

When my niece was born in 1987 my sister picked up the photos from the chemist , only to find 24 photos of my bil’s thumb.

SydneyCarton · 23/01/2026 16:04

I love that pale green church hall china! My parents have some bowls and cups like it, and also weirdly some table linen with the old British Rail logo which I think came from either a staff canteen or the dining cars and was sold off when BR ceased to exist.

@PlumDeNomNomNom And if a place did take credit cards the staff member would take a carbon copy of it with that little back-and-forth machine and you signed the slip, I think?

Speaking of machines, those ones you got in shoe shops sometimes where you put your foot in a sort of square hole and metal bits came out from all the sides to measure your feet. I was always frightened they wouldn't stop and my feet would be crushed!

And the red sticker of shame where they explained very carefully exactly how you'd managed to fuck up the photo 😂

Crochet dollies to cover spare loo rolls.

These things were commonplace and usually the kind of thing older family members had from what I recall. As well as Royal Doulton ladies on the mantelpiece.

My gran (Dad's mum) had those. She crocheted the dresses for them herself. She also had one of those ashtrays on a long stand beside the loo. So classy, so 70s. 😂

ConnieHeart · 23/01/2026 16:11

Snickers once were Marathon. A colleague, in his late 30s didn't believe me!

Put another 2p (2p!!!) in when the pips went!

Or ring the operator to get them to ring your parents to ask them to reverse the charges if you'd run out of money! Those phone boxes were the only way to ring home if you were out & about. If it was occupied or vandalised you just had to walk to the next one

15February1960 · 23/01/2026 16:17

Those rubber shower attachments to wash your hair.. water either came out scalding or freezing.

I'd forgotten about the sticker of shame 😂

During my graduation ball (90s) my camera went missing for a while; a guy took some graphic 'up kilt' pictures which I wasn't aware of until I collected the photos.... I got a right bollocking (no pun intended) from the chemist and was told never to come back 🤣
