If you had to pick a song and only one that made you think of your kids, what would it be ?

I did a montage reel for DS 18th birthday and I used Hero by the Foo Fighters.

It’s not slushy but my best friend said “it nearly ended her” and MIL started crying in a public place 😂😂

Lovely thread 🥹

I'll add the one that goes "once I was seven years old"

One of the school mums made a slideshow when the DC were leaving primary school with this as the backing track and sent it to our WhatsApp group on the last day of term - not a dry eye!

Silly song is Chocolat (Choco Choco). We still switch their Spotify song to this every now again just to annoy them now they’re older.

Sensible song is As it was by Harry Styles. All 4 of us in the car singing along to this on our way to Legoland is a core memory for me.

"What's the use of Wings?" A song about letting go of the things (and people) you love. I thought of it a lot when my children left home.

"Why do people cage the things they love the most?
Is it simply that they fear to be alone?
If you give you're love it's freedom, it will stay awhile
If it leaves you, it was never yours to own"

Robin by Taylor Swift caught me off guard the first time I really listened to the words. It perfectly encapsulates my youngests personality. It’s just beautiful.

Cher. If I Could Turn Back Time. A frequent earworm.

Keane- Everything is changing, for DS1. His transition from High School was hard, and this song was out at the time
( he had a life changing diagnosis). My heart was breaking for him. His life is so much happier now- husband and father, another child on the way- he has a beautiful family, and ensures that I am majorly involved, despite being in different countries. I am so proud of him.

When he was a little boy- Sweet Child o Mine, and Brown Eyed Girl (but I changed the words to Boy 😁)

Travis- Flowers in the window, for DH and DS2. He came to us as a 14 hour old foster child. I felt he needed the fanfare every other newborn came with, so I bought flowers and a balloon- silly I know. I kept him next to my skin (he was prem). He’s 25, and has been ours legally since he was 15 months old, but really since we first met him. He lights up my life.

Also for him: Aerosmith- Don’t want to miss a thing, because I didn’t think we’d be able to adopt him, and every moment was cherished during his first year.

I'll Try from the film Return to Neverland. My DD danced a solo to it in a show in her mid teens and it always reminds me of her. Many years later I still have it on my playlist in m car and it always makes me sniffle!

Oh god yes, this song😭 had to accompany a girl singing this for a competition and my own DD had just moved up to secondary and was leaving the house alone for the first time and catching the bus to big school.... I couldn't not get emotional 😭

Fitst time i heard it, that waas it.....😭

Aintgointogoa · 14/01/2026 01:42

Video Killed the Radiostar by Buggles. DS had a little toy ukelele and used to go bonkers when they came on TOTP / radio whatevs.
Ditto Night Moves Bob Seger (I had the album) . He'd charge off to get it and come in swingin' his axe 😂
When he turned into moody Kevin all I'd hear from his room was Stero MC's Get Myself Connected.
My song for him on worrisome nights was May You Never by John Martyn (and still is, but at least I know where he is, with his wife) 🫠😻

We have always told our DC that their theme tunes are "Here Comes the Sun" and "Mr Blue Sky" respectively. The lyrics are surprisingly apt for each of them and our circumstances when we had them, and both songs make all of us smile every time we hear them.

HeadyLamarr · 14/01/2026 03:24

Puff The Magic Dragon - they loved it, I used to sing it to them at bedtime, and "a dragon lives forever; not so, little boys" made me cry.

ThePerfectWeekend · 14/01/2026 03:55

DC3 (our youngest) went to university in September. 'Slipping through my fingers' always evokes an emotional response, especially when I hear it driving alone.
She calls every couple of days, usually on the walk to her accommodation after lectures. It's a rare day she doesn't message and loves nipping home (a four hour journey), when she gets chance.
DC1 is married with a baby. He bought a home only a five minute drive away. DC2 is still at home, saving to buy, again probably within miles.
Reading MN I feel quite fortunate to have DC who like spending time with me and 'speaking' most days. I do try to get DH and them to speak regularly as well to each other because I'm definitely the default parent. The messages and calls from each are usually about nothing particular, how their days have been, photos of GD, etc. not just because they want something.
I'm pleased that I'm amongst the first they tell any news. I think that song is probably what I feared as they became adults, that I'd become irrelevant to their lives. So far, so good and I'm grateful for that. It still makes me cry and the DC come to mind as soon as I hear it.

All of these make me think of DS2, especially 'Flowers in the window.' I had it on a CD created by DH ready for labour. DS had other ideas and was born minutes after arriving at hospital. We didn't even get it in the player. DC1 was born to 'Comfortably numb' by Pink Floyd.
The radio was on when I was in labour with a then nameless DD. Beautiful South came on, the one with...Jennifer, Phillipa Sue. The midwife laughed when I said, "There must be a name in there for her."

Not one particular song but anything by Annie Lennox. My son loves her and has done since he was seven. He's 37 now and she's still his favourite.

"My Girl" by the Temptations (which also worked as "my boy" for ds)

I got sunshine
On a cloudy day
When it's cold outside
I got the month of May
I guess you'd say
What can make you feel that way?
My girl, talking 'bout my girl...

Just takes me right back to holding them as babies and singing that to them... ☺️

That is dd1s song. Dh and her danced to it as their first dance at her wedding this year.

Like you it takes me right back to holding my newborn first baby.

MyballsareSandy2015 · 14/01/2026 18:52

Your Song, Elton John
”How wonderful life is now you’re in the world”
I used to sing it to my twins … waited a long time for those babies 🥰
