If you had to pick a song and only one that made you think of your kids, what would it be ?

For DS I'm torn between Move Like Jagger by Maroon 5 & HowLong will I Love You by Ellie Goulding

The first he used to sing and dance to in the bath just after he was placed with us for adoption at 4.5 , the second we heard when it was the song for Children in Need just before his first birthday with us and he said it was our song

If I could only choose for for my desert island it would probably have to be Maroon 5 as I can picture him dancing along in the bath like a mini Mick Jagger

🎶 Somewhere only we know 🎶

Princessdebthe1st · 13/01/2026 01:31

From Barney the dinosaur:
"I love you, you love me, we're a happy family. With a great big hug and a kiss from me to you, won't you say you love me too?" We often sang that together when we were walking home from school.

Now she is older and not far from stepping out in the world on her own it is Sigrid, Home to You:

“When I don't know what to say
When I don't know what to do
There's a room I need to sit in
Surrounded by my favorite view
And I need a hand to hold
Someone to tell the truth
Would it be okay if I came home to you?”

it usually makes me cry!

I'll Stand by You by The Pretenders. My DS is ND and I have had to fight his corner every day and will go on doing so.

This is mine too, I remember listening to it not long after I'd left my abusive marriage and realised I was going to be basically bringing the kids up on my own. Still get a bit emotional when I hear it.

For other reasons, Dancing With Myself by Billy Idol and pretty much all the songs from Horrible Histories!

SafeAndStranded · 13/01/2026 09:05

DD1 is Count on Me by Bruno Mars. We always listened to it in the car and agreed it was my song to her.

DS is Fix You by Coldplay. He's severely disabled and just sums up how I want to help him. It kills me though.

DD2 I Knew You Were Trouble by Taylor Swift. This was in the car on the way to hospital to be induced and after she was born (fast delivery, cord round neck, meconium etc) the midwife said "this one's going to be trouble". She is, but in the best way.

Uprising by Muse. My DD absolutely loved it when she was little and we played it on a loop. She’s now at uni doing politics 🤪

Dd-You are my sunshine.
Ds-Spaceman. I remember it being on the tannoy in a very empty supermarket and we sang along in a silly voice spinning the trolley they were in around.

Which spaceman there's loads

I can’t choose just 1 so
Kooks by David Bowie
The Lion Sleeps Tonight
Charmed Life by The Divine Comedy which Neil wrote for his daughter when she was small, it’s so lovely , as is the song called Invisible Thread about her growing up.

gingercat02 · 13/01/2026 17:09

Moves like Jagger. He was obsessed by it, or Shotgun by George Ezra, first gig I took him to.
He would probably choose something by Sam Fender, which was our first stadium gig.

RhannionKPSS · 13/01/2026 17:11

This is a lovely thread , thank you OP

Millionaire by Dr Hook. .. The worst years of my life fighting exh for equal custody. Driving the 500 miles every week to adhere to the court order.... We all sang along. . Dc now in their 20's and still know all the words..

I love this song and it makes me think of my dad.

For my kids….. Golden, K-pop Demon Hunters HmmGrin

Welcome to the Monkey House

Really surprised only 2 people have mentioned Abba's 'Slipping Through my Fingers' for this thread.

Oh god yes, this song😭 had to accompany a girl singing this for a competition and my own DD had just moved up to secondary and was leaving the house alone for the first time and catching the bus to big school.... I couldn't not get emotional 😭

TwooooDoooozenRoses · 13/01/2026 20:27

Take you with me by Luke Combs, if it had to be for both.

abracadabra1980 · 13/01/2026 20:41

(nursery rhymes excepted).. What's That Coming Over the Hill Is It a Monster by 🙈
and
Pink - So What

CoffeeChocolateWine · 13/01/2026 21:21

Ho hey by the Lumineers always reminds me of my DS…
I belong with you, you belong with me
You're my sweetheart!

She's a Rainbow by the Rolling Stones DD1 🌈
She comes in colours everywhere
She combs her hair
She's a rainbow!

And Hold my Girl by George Ezra for DD2…it transports me back to the days I would cuddle and sing her to sleep every night ❤️
I've got time, I've got love
Got confidence you'll rise above
Give me a minute to hold my girl
Give me a minute to hold my girl!

CoffeeChocolateWine · 13/01/2026 21:29

Just realised you said one song for all of them…that is far trickier!

Thesummer · 13/01/2026 21:34

Golden or Soda Pop by Kpop demon hunters 😂 (mine are still v young, youngest is 20 months and these are the only songs they both love)

MostlyGhostly · 13/01/2026 21:41

Undercover Martyn by 2 door cinema club. It used to come on the radio (the late, great XFM) lots on the school run (they’re late 20s adults now) and we’d sing along. They tell me that similar indie songs from that era remind them of me and refer to that music genre as “ghostly”core.

Middlemarch123 · 13/01/2026 22:04

Stay Another Day, East 17, no. 1 when my twin DDs were born.
Feels Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana, which my DS played at school leavers assembly, got a standing ovation, proud mum moment, my little drummer boy did good 👍
The Man Who Can’t Be Moved, The Script, when I told them that I was chucking their cheating dad out, this was on Top of the Pops, and amidst all the tears and turmoil I thought, a, this one’s being moved, and b, Danny O’Donaguie is lush.

HippyChickMama · 13/01/2026 22:24

Moon On Your Pyjamas by Paul Weller, written for his son and the lyrics are lovely
Edited to add - or Superhero by Onelinedrawing
‘If you make someone in to a superhero, know that they will fly,
And they will see right through you,
They will burn so bright,
That they will make you blind’
It reminds me of ds, fighting for support for him at school (SEN) and he’s now at uni doing better than we ever imagined he would
