One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

So far I have done the snagging list for the contractors and also put in (yet another) complaint to the management company for our flats!

Our old bedding goes in the garage for rags, painting cloths and covers for the two dogs bedding in the boot of the car.

tempting but i need to be more ruthless

BridasShieldWall · 04/01/2026 14:29

Taken down the Christmas decorations and put them away.
Taken the tree to the tip.
Ordered a new integrated bin for the kitchen after procrastinating last year.
Submitted meter readings and applied for a new tariff - £150 reduction in the monthly payments, Yay.

Today’s shitty job was cleaning all the limescale off the taps and the bottom of the sink plugs.

i used the 2p trick which works brilliantly. Four taps and two bathroom sinks, plus some bits in the bottom of the bathtub only took about 15 mins total and looks a world of difference.

What's the 2p trick?

EducatingArti · 04/01/2026 14:36

I was wondering that too!

1AnotherOne · 04/01/2026 14:42

Literally just scrub at the limescale with a 2p and it comes right away! I use a bit of viakyl to soak it first. It takes a bit of chipping away at and wiping but it’s fab

Shittyyear2025 · 04/01/2026 14:49

The light is fitted, the door is hung and the decs are in the loft (had a quick re-shuffle up there too so now all decs are in the same place, suitcases together. It's a nightmare up there - I've got loads of random camping stuff as well as maybe 30 boxes of stuff from my late mum's house that's been up there for 3 years. That's a big project.

Dishwasher is on after lunch, washing machine on 3rd load, all hung up to dry so far.

Now I'm going to hoover the stairs and pop to tesco. Going to drop some bits off at the tip on my way to work tomorrow, that will be my shit job ticked off before 8.30am.

Might stand and do some ironing later to make a dent in the mountain...

Tree and half the decs down, still got yo sort out a few to go to charity, tap in bathroom replaced and did my emails..made turkey and ham pies for the freezer yesterday....few other paperwork bits to do but I'm procrastinating...work prep tonight and hopefully a nice bath and early night, before the onslaught of work tasks start.
House still feels like a tip after Christmas but I'm determined to get a little done each day and reduce how much time I spend procrastinating by scrolling on my phone every day..

Gizlotsmum · 04/01/2026 14:53

Notice/ cork board sorted, white board updated, front room mopped

powershowerforanhour · 04/01/2026 15:52

Thanks to this thread I have emptied out a big kitchen cupboard, cleaned years' worth of manky dust out of it (you know when dust is so old it's kind of solidified, even though it's a closed cupboard), binned /recycled/burn piled some of the crap therein - a filthy old landline phone from the 90s, DD1s drawings from 3 years ago that she didn't care about and some old paperwork that just got shoved there to clear the decks.
Moved a nice old fine bone china set of mum's from the 80s/90s dinner parties and another tableware set that I don't remember and might have been an unused present from the 70s or 80s into the old dining room which is the downstairs Room of Doom. Stuff shifting I know but if I can get most of the don't know/have to check with siblings/other grey zone stuff corralled in the RoD for now, at least it's not fouling up the rest of my house.
Put sewing kits and candles for power cuts back in the cupboard as it's their ancestral home and added DDs school homeworky stuff and library books awaiting return to be the new designated place for them, instead of cluttering up the kitchen table, sides, under the beds and lost.

Admin wise- did an hour of CPD and recorded it under 2025 - still need to do 16.5hrs for 2025 then start on 2026 to get it done before flipping Christmas this year in my usual depressed cramming.

1AnotherOne · 04/01/2026 15:53

I’ve also sorted out the shoe cupboard today and done a fridge rotation when the food shop arrived.

I’m going to inventory the freezer this afternoon and write a list of what’s in there so I can meal plan around that for the rest of the month.

powershowerforanhour · 04/01/2026 15:57

Thanks for this OP, and thanks especially for calling a shitty job a shitty job. The ones that you don't feel like gamifying, and aren't daily routine ones that you can do without thinking, and have a high "boring drudgery" : "sparking joyous memories ratio.

EleanorReally · 04/01/2026 15:58

one bag of assorted duvet covers/sheets/towels taken to clothing bank! admittedly just one of each but still

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/01/2026 15:59

today I have moved a couple of bookshelves from one room into my sons room and then transferred piles of books and all his football trophies onto it. It looks good! It was one of those grim jobs because he’s like a little magpie, he had just loads of random but apparently very important things, scraps of paper, squishy toys and pencils all covered in dust and I have wiped and cleaned every one and given him a couple of storage baskets for them. I know some people would bin them but these are his treasures, I love that he wants to keep them. So now it looks lovely and tidy.

tomorrow I need to put a couple more bits in the loft and break up an old chest of drawers

Bananaramad · 04/01/2026 16:12

CharlotteRumpling · 04/01/2026 12:18

Absolutely need this. But does housework count? I do plenty of that. It's keeping me from the real shitty jobs ie financial admin.

Doing the SJ's has inspired me to keep (a bit) on top of normal house work. Not putting things off till later . I've emptied dishwasher when finished, hoovered kitchen floor. Put a wash on dried and put away. Feeling optimistic for 2026 4 days in 😆 good luck, great thread.

Fgfgfg · 04/01/2026 16:15

Just found this thread and I'm not going to count day to day jobs but have my eye on the basket of doom by the bed. Perfume, cleansers, medication etc all piled into one basket. I'll let you know how I get on...

DeathMetalMum · 04/01/2026 16:58

Christmas decorations down, dp has put them into the loft. We have left out the Christmas teddies as they need a wash though it's probably not going to happen this week with the awful weather. I also cleaned two windows (inside) as they looked filthy. Not the most productive day but a busy week ahead of back to school and all other clubs starting up, so I took a bit of calm time.

EmeraldRoulette · 04/01/2026 17:12

@Bananaramad what are the SJs please?

I actually did a couple of bits before going to mum's - putting laundry away. Thanks so much for this thread @Shittyyear2025

I'm thinking to start meditation classes, can't find anything near but might have to rouse myself and get on the train, am basically just lazy!

EducatingArti · 04/01/2026 17:22

SJs are "shitty jobs".

I've also taken out rubbish and recycling ( a SJ for me as I live in a first floor flat and have to take it downstairs and across the courtyard).
Then I've stripped the bed and got the sheets in the machine. ( Something that is more random and irregular than it should be!) I need to put the clean sheets on before I run out of energy. I also tidied the kitchen a bit which is more of a day to day task but also did the next stage in a small DIY task.

justasking111 · 04/01/2026 17:30

Unexpected SJ last night. Unbeknownst to me DH had decided to wipe out the main oven, only he's more of a sluicer than a wiper. Opening the drawer beneath the oven last night for some cling film and found disgusting greasy splodges of liquid all over the boxes of cling film, foil and ziplock bags as well as my store of clean tea towels. Had to empty and throw stuff, put all the tea towels in the washing machine, scrub and bleach out the drawer. 🤬

prettygirlincrimsonrose · 04/01/2026 17:40

Definitely need this thread, thank you @Shittyyear2025. I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed at the moment as so many parts of the house don't function well because of the amount of stuff that needs sorting and I hate that I feel miserable in my own home. This weekend I've taken decorations down, taken tree to be recycled and vacuumed car to remove pine needles from said tree. May wander round with a notebook and list jobs that seem manageable - suspect lots of my list will be donate x, take x to tip etc.

Tara220 · 04/01/2026 17:51

Ive been doing SJ for a.little while now as ive seen the reels and they inspired me. Today i used limescale remover on taps and shower screens, they look tons better. Also replaced the batteries in the bathroom scales. Tomorrow i will ring Sky and tell them.i dont accept thier out of contract price rise and if i get time after getting rid of Sky im going to tackle the kitchem cupboard that is full of carrier bags.

StartingOverInMy40s · 04/01/2026 17:57

Got rid of a unit in our hall that never looked as good there as I thought it would. Popped it on marketplace and it was gone in no time. Everything stores on there has been found new homes or has gone in the bin.

cleared out our cupboard under the stairs which didn’t take too long as we did it not long ago but it was a wrapping paper dumping ground.

feeling motivated at the minute so I think I’m going to sort out a drawer now too 🤣

Undercovers · 04/01/2026 18:00

Today's SJ was sorting out a massive pile of important paperwork that had accumulated over months. Didn't take long but wouldn't have happened without this thread, thank you OP!

cosimnotwhereitsat · 04/01/2026 18:08

Oh I will join
