One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

I'm in. I'm going to clear some invasive plants out of the garden.

Also on the list is the garage.

TimeTime · 03/01/2026 08:32

I started doing this in the autumn when I reduced my hours and silly little things in life run so much more smoothly as a result. It really makes a difference. One other thing I did, was start making a list of minor DIY tasks that needed doing and then booked in a handyman for the day. That was money very well spent! I had a built in funny shaped cupboard in the hall which just had things shoved in it and various bits would always fall on you when you opened the door. I went through it and threw away loads of stuff in September, went through it again in November and got rid of even more stuff and the in December the handy man added a couple of shelves and some hooks and things and now I’m optimistic that it won’t get as messy ever again as it works so well as it is.

Sitoff · 03/01/2026 09:38

NYD - after 18 months procrastination about booking a repair I disconnected broken kitchen appliance and booked a replacement (plus removal of the old one).
Yesterday packed up returns and exchanges from Christmas and got them all out of the house except one (which I will do today..)

Jamfirstest · 03/01/2026 09:41

Can I join? I need to take a pile of junk to the chazza today.

SemmaLina · 03/01/2026 09:46

I’m in , today I’m going through my make up bag / drawer and chucking ( into a bag , as there’s a make up recycling bin in Tesco ) all the dodgy stuff out

The Christmas Decs will come down too , but that’s a joint job

We have a little snow , so there may be time for another job this afternoon if we can’t go for a walk

Can I join? I need to take a pile of junk to the chazza today.

Wardrobe sortage is on my list. Feel like I need to do the chazza run more frequently so I don't have another corner of doom to overwhelm me.

Despite early planning I'm still in bed... Must stop wallowing and get shit done

The very first thing everyone needs to do is MAKE A LIST!
I love a list 😂. I have a notebook by my bed that I keep my list in. On NYE, I started a new list and have already ticked off a couple of things - clearing out the fridge to get rid of the leftover Xmas food and sorting out the freezer, sorting out my financial stuff and clearing out the spare bedroom.
On my list, I also write down how long I think each task might take and also prioritise them by colour coding them (I know, I’m sad).
I find it cathartic to look at the list at bed time to see what I can cross off, what I can do the next day and to add anything else that might have come up.
Off to de Christmas the house now!

Hereforthedramaz · 03/01/2026 09:57

Oh yes OP this sounds good I’m in too.

im just not a tidy person, I don’t mind or really see mess but I want to do better!

Today, actually putting away all the dry goods from a sainsburys delivery and putting the pile of things on vinted like I’ve been meaning to for weeks

Bananaramad · 03/01/2026 10:21

Before Christmas I went through drawers in living room and dining room furniture and cleared them out. ..... drawers are my problem stuff them close them

PermanentTemporary · 03/01/2026 10:26

I’m in. Today’s shitty job is to buy a couple of large letter stamps (or whatever they are now) and post off a piece of paperwork so that I can do my mum’s tax return - that shitty job will have to wait until this one is done.

The next shitty job after this is to sort out one drawer of the 10 insanely awful ones I have to do.

hottentot · 03/01/2026 10:28

Just cleaned the lounge and taken down decorations!

Also emptied drawers in the coffee table which were overflowing 😬

Great thread! 😊

RaininSummer · 03/01/2026 10:33

Today I will take the Christmas decks to the attic. I will change the bedding. I also have to do a big post Christmas shop for actual food.

Sunshineandrainbow · 03/01/2026 10:34

Oh blimey if I write it down I might have to do it!

Sofa is at an angle and years of stuff thrown down the back of it to hide out the way. It all needs to come out and decisions made on where it goes!!!

MooFroo · 03/01/2026 10:38

Cleaned bedroom a bit yesterday and wiped dust and marks off wardrobe doors and doors

Today - loose plan to organise and sort out the spare room - have lots of ikea boxes in the garage so can put stuff in those and bin what we don’t need or use. DH is home so hoping he will help!

Suboptimummy · 03/01/2026 10:40

Just done returns admin on sale shopping including a dreaded phone call to ask them to extend the returns period. Hurrah! Next shitty job: post office, so putting parcels by the door in case I forget.

EmeraldRoulette · 03/01/2026 11:17

@Shittyyear2025 honestly you could make this a daily thread and you'd probably win a prize for the most successful long running thread!

I'm just thinking, how to separate shitty jobs from normal housework jobs. I'm not on top of them either. So today's shitty job would actually be going to the supermarket, not normally so bad but I really hate the cold (I have to walk there).

do I do another shitty job on top of that? Or do I make a list and blitz them?

I used to be very good with this stuff, but now I just cba.

Idontthinkicandothisanymore · 03/01/2026 12:55

Today’s job. Got to DMs took her tree down and hoovered mopped and cleaned her windows.

Edited

See, for me that could definitely be a shitty job as I would also need to empty the fridge, write a menu and shopping list, do the actual shopping AND fully unpack it when I got home. It's on my plan for a work day next week. Clear the fridge before work, write the list throughout the day, shop on my way home, unpack as the oven is warming for pizza for tea.

My shitty job #1 has come unstuck as when taking down the knackered light fitting I discovered that the previous owner has plastered around the fitting and will leave a horrible hole. En route to the DIY shop for filler and white paint.

Tree is half down, door is dry ready for another coat.

Tree and most decorations down. Will get son to put them in the loft.

daisychain01 · 03/01/2026 13:49

Sorted out our home and contents insurance the day the policy documents arrived. Did a quick check to ensure we have a competitive deal and decided to stick with our current insurance company.

built a huge bonfire for garden debris and shoved on a massive pile of old home office confidential documents that weren't suitable for recycling. Double whammy shitty jobs!

DH is doing the really shitty job of setting up my Garmin VivoActive sports watch with all the settings I need and removing everything else thats irrelevant (I am not interested in snowboarding, hoopla-hooping, Zumba Yasayadayada. All the rubbish they add on as factory settings.). I just could not be arsed, so the watch stayed in the box since last Christmas! Hopefully I can start using it from tomorrow once he's explained which buttons to press.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 03/01/2026 13:52

Yes, please can I join in?

I have submitted meter readings.
Topped up the salt in the water softener.
Taken down the Christmas decs and put them away in boxes. Just waiting for DS to help me put them up in the loft.

PermanentTemporary · 03/01/2026 13:54

@Sunshineandrainbow thats an amazing job! It will feel so fantastic when you’ve done it.

Ive bought the stamps, now need to find an envelope…

evtheria · 03/01/2026 13:56

Joining, many shitty tasks (big and small) to do

DeathMetalMum · 03/01/2026 14:20

Joining. Today I changed the lightbulb in the outside light that went a couple of weeks ago.

As it's Saturday I am also going to finish off sorting and re-arranging the draws in DC's room. It will only take approx 30 mins but I have been putting it off.

indoorherbs · 03/01/2026 14:22

Count me in!
