One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

OP posts:

I'd like to join in.
New year's day we hung new curtains and changed the bed.
Friday we sorted the drawers under the bed. A few things to go the charity shop.
Today sorted out the chest of drawers.
Tomorrow we hope to sort out the wardrobe.

It's a good idea doing a small thing at a time. Now realise how much rubbish we have.

EmeraldRoulette · 03/01/2026 23:37

Forgot to add. I also did some laundry.

So perhaps I haven't been quite that useless.

Darker · 04/01/2026 06:25

I got distracted yesterday with job hunting but I did start a list of things I need to do around the house that I’ll need to get somebody in to do. Feeling a bit overwhelmed tbh.

ThirdBanana · 04/01/2026 06:49

I had some time off before Xmas, and have a set of lists running (small, medium, and large tasks). I add things to the relevant list as I see them, and tick off items as I do them. I find having each small task detailed to be very helpful, rather than having a huge task of “deep clean kitchen.” “Tidy cutlery drawer” is an achievable task for a 10 minute activity, and consequently I don’t put it off.

EleanorReally · 04/01/2026 06:49

my airing cupboard is so full, i need to get rid of duvet covers,
off to the clothes bin today

PersephoneParlormaid · 04/01/2026 06:51

I washed my kitchen cupboards out yesterday, and got rid of any old food/spices etc.

LunchtimeNaps · 04/01/2026 06:54

I need to do this in order to get my house ready to go on the market. Wish DP would join in but he's a bit of a "shitty job avoider"

Monty27 · 04/01/2026 07:07

I'm in even if I'm exhausted having cleaned up after packing up the decs. It's immaculate atm but I feel like putting up new pictures and stuff and brightening up everywhere. I treated myself to a Takker so I don't have to ask for help.
I've bought a lot of soft furnishings in the sales.
We will conquer!
Happy bright new year everyone.

DeathMetalMum · 04/01/2026 07:41

Christmas decorations down and away is today's shitty job. It's also first recycling day following Christmas so I will aim to gather as much as possible to fit in the almost overflowing paper bin. I may tick off another one or two as it's the weekend. I'm doing some overtime next week in work so won't have as much time. Can I cheat and do an extra shitty job (or two) today to count for tomorrow?

pregnantprayingmantis · 04/01/2026 09:13

I’m in! Took down the Xmas decks, tree and outside lights on the 2nd Jan. Did a big clean of eldest bedroom while they’re away for a few days. Today bit the bullet and gave my wardrobe/dressing room a clean out. This job has been on my list for nearly a year so some serious procrastination. I put a timer on for 25 minutes and did 3 x sessions, played some pop music took breaks. Rewarded myself with a beach trip and swim (it’s summer here).

Felt inspired when I got home and gave teenage DD’s windows and dresser a bit of a clean (tackled the nail polish and makeup stains).

I’m back at work tomorrow sadly. Will try and keep it up before work and life swallow me up again.

ThreeFrenchHensHoHoHo · 04/01/2026 09:16

I like this very much. Yesterday I finished taking down the decorations and cleaned the freezer drawers. That took maybe 15 minutes and has been annoying me for months.
anyone else feel like getting a skip and chucking everything away at the moment ?!

powershowerforanhour · 04/01/2026 09:22

Good thread and good luck OP.

SemmaLina · 04/01/2026 09:41

We seem to be snowed in today
My list to keep me busy and not open the packet of biscuits left over from Christmas

Print documents for holiday ( not til April , but …. )
Clean ( properly ) my bathroom
Recycling day tomorrow ( hope we can get down the drive , and more importantly back up ! )

SoUncertain · 04/01/2026 09:44

Great thread! I've been reading everyone's posts to inspire my own list. I'll add that I have done some jobs for the past three days, so not behind!
1st - deweeded garden with DD
2nd - took down main Christmas tree and living room bits
3rd - decluttered DD's outgrown clothes

Today we need to take down DD's tree.

I have lots of repairs and repainting to do, a tonne of decluttering, hanging pictures, tip and charity shop runs, getting rid of old car, organising, finally making some photo albums, and so in and so on! I'm sure I can fill a year! 😅

RedFatball · 04/01/2026 09:56

My shitty jobs list

take decorations down
tidy hall and get rid of old shoes
tidy kitchen table of shit
sort Tupperware cupboard

I love challenges like this although I rarely stick to them. Maybe this year...

KrazyboutKillian · 04/01/2026 10:22

Joining the thread for a SJ per day , although not today as trying to rest and get. Through this bug that everyone has

list will include
sort all the spare toiletries / makeup ( 2 kallax boxes full
purge all the canvas style trainers that are for whatever reason ‘ not quite right ‘
throw away glasses we don’t use from the kitchen , I’m sure they breed , they are taking over the cupboard

EducatingArti · 04/01/2026 12:12

I think I need to join this thread!
I have a list of things to do. So far today I have managed to have a shower, drink coffee and do some clothes sale shopping online

Meanwhile two of my rooms look rather like the start of a hoarding problem. I've been mid- sort out for a while but the death of parent and starting to clear their house (I'm trying to be very restrained and select as to what I bring in- honest) has brought a few more things into the mix. I'm also only just post renovation following what I call the great soil stack saga of 2025. (You really don't want to know the details!)

  • Disclaimer - I have chronic condition that causes fatigue and there are some days when I am out/ busy a lot where I don't manage anything!
readingisallowed · 04/01/2026 12:15

Wardrobe has been sorted. Didn't realise how much was in there that didn't fit.
DH is going to get the carpet cleaner out and that's our bedroom done.
Think I might look at the smallest bedroom tomorrow as it's given snow so won't be able to get out.

CharlotteRumpling · 04/01/2026 12:18

Absolutely need this. But does housework count? I do plenty of that. It's keeping me from the real shitty jobs ie financial admin.

I expect you can do whatever you like. For me, I won't count normal housework but might count something big jobs that aren't done often, like cleaning the oven for example.

my airing cupboard is so full, i need to get rid of duvet covers,
off to the clothes bin today

Our old bedding goes in the garage for rags, painting cloths and covers for the two dogs bedding in the boot of the car.

Songlines · 04/01/2026 13:57

Love this idea, thank you.

Today I've done the re-cycling
I'm about to do the meter readings, 4 days later than I'd like.
I've started to take the decorations down.

Tomorrow I'll get the decorations into their boxes and ready to go back into the loft.

I can't see our bin men get down our steep road and then cul de sac. They're working at night on the gritting wagons too.

1AnotherOne · 04/01/2026 13:59

Today’s shitty job was cleaning all the limescale off the taps and the bottom of the sink plugs.

i used the 2p trick which works brilliantly. Four taps and two bathroom sinks, plus some bits in the bottom of the bathtub only took about 15 mins total and looks a world of difference.

Sunshineandswimming · 04/01/2026 14:01

On my list today:
Sort the finances (check that the direct debits are correct) and plan money for next month.
Clear the office cupboards - this might spill into next weekend as it's a big job.
Interview prep.
