One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

@Shittyyear2025

You posted yesterday and you have since got multiple responses that are probably much better than mine but for me I find start with the smallest / least stressful task first and do that - momentum will build.

Good luck. I will be following to learn as well.

My shitty job today was to return something to next in town, I walked in by myself and had a mooch around so it wasn’t as shitty in the end as it could have been. I tried on a few pairs of jeans and had that awful omg moment in the changing room mirrors, did not buy the jeans, and then walked home full of resolve that this year will be the year I finally get my ass (literally) in gear.

we also took the decs down and rather than leave them on the landing for another day I braved the freezing cold attic and put it all away. Clearing out loft out this year is another thing on the SJ list.

yorkshiretoffee · 03/01/2026 16:54

I'm in too. Cleaned a bit of mould off the wall this morning - now planning to make a list of around 10 things and do one of them each day. And create a rolling list thereafter.
The idea that progress is being made rather than just endless laundry/washing up/cooking is a really nice idea.

MightyGoldBear · 03/01/2026 17:04

Yes I'm in. I'm currently sorting my make up collection it's amazing how much I have for someone who rarely wears it 🙈 I'm all ears for any storage tips. I have the ikea pax wardrobe so looking for good storage ideas for the shelves side. I'm sure the Internet will have some ideas.

ginislife · 02/01/2026 21:28

Yesterday I sorted out my shoes into new storage. Today I’ve met with a mortgage advisor. I’m on a roll !! 😂

I have to sort out my paperwork for the mortgage advisor now 😫

Sagaris · 03/01/2026 17:28

Indoor Christmas decs are down and put away in the loft, DH had a good vacuum round afterwards. Outdoor lights tomorrow!

Shittyyear2025 · 03/01/2026 17:34

Door painted
Xmas decs taken down and sorted - need ds to help me put them back up in the loft. I've retrieved everything from around the house and put it all in the Xmas boxes so won't be hanging around until next year.
Light fitting half done, but new parts ordered for finishing off tomorrow.

Tomorrow is clean out the fridge. And finish fitting the light, and hang the door.

Cleared and cleaned the top of the tall boy in bedroom and set up WiFi tv.
I do find 1 shitty job a day works.

ThatFlightyTemptressAdventure · 03/01/2026 17:44

Brilliant thread, I’m in.

I’m impressed by the momentum some of you have got going.

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 03/01/2026 17:47

I’m on a decluttering thread but think this would be good as well. Shitty job for tomorrow will be to clean out the fridge, which is well overdue! I did chuck away a load of out of date food yesterday. We do waste a lot & that needs to change.

CurbsideProphet · 03/01/2026 17:47

Great thread.
Sorted DC's wardrobe yesterday and bagged up the too small things to donate.
We cleaned the oven today for the first time in a long time. Not perfect, but marginally less horrendous.

Need to tackle the drawers in the side table. Won't be possible with small child present. I will do this on a work day while I'm waiting for the kettle to boil!

Gizlotsmum · 03/01/2026 17:48

Also joining. All decs down today and tomorrow is sorting my desk and finding homes for all presents. Also getting planner/whiteboard updated!

hottentot · 03/01/2026 17:49

Cleaned windows and stopped squeaks in hinges

Hoovered bedrooms

Woohoo 🎉

StartingOverInMy40s · 03/01/2026 18:10

I’m in.

I’ve been ill and off work for a while and I feel like my house is in need of some love. Add to that the fact that we hope to move house in the first few months of the year and I definitely have some work to do.

Today it’s been a bit of life admin - sorted out my emails, signed up to Plum to help me save better this year, contacted Amazon about a complaint and got a refund and listed a few things on vinted.

tomorrow I’m going to supervise my partner painting a wall and sort out a unit we’re selling.

Cleaned bedroom a bit yesterday and wiped dust and marks off wardrobe doors and doors

Today - loose plan to organise and sort out the spare room - have lots of ikea boxes in the garage so can put stuff in those and bin what we don’t need or use. DH is home so hoping he will help!

The Spare room of Doom is done!

Results -

  • 1 rubbish bag
  • 2 vacuum sealed bags which has emptied up 2 drawers in the actual wardrobes
  • a few things moved into other rooms / garage
  • posted some items in local FB group - free to collect and hoping I don’t get messed around too much!

still need to get DH to put empty suitcases in the loft and then all done!

Pls can we make this a daily or weekly thread?!

MaarvaCarassi · 03/01/2026 18:14

Today’s SJ - cleaned some rubbish out the car

Sunshineandrainbow · 03/01/2026 18:38

I did it I cleared behind the sofa!

1 massive bin bag and 2 charity sacks filled.

All wool sorted into a neat zip ikea bad.

Feeling fantastic. Shame I have to go to work now as I was on a roll!

AreThereSomewhereIslands · 03/01/2026 18:58

Count me in!

I do a first-day-of-the-month blitz anyway (submit meter readings; descale the kettle and shower head; put power gel down the bath and washbasin plugholes; file the previous month's statements, bills and receipts) but yesterday I cleaned the bathroom grouting and today <fanfare> I emptied then refilled all three bedroom window-ledge condensation absorbers.

...Oh, and I also went to the PO to buy a postal order. Now I just need to write out an envelope and put a stamp on it tonight, then I can stick it in the postbox outside the supermarket when I nip in for milk tomorrow morning.

I've already pencilled in Monday's tiresome task which is to go into the town centre and pay off the whopping great credit card bill for the cat's dental treatment. There'll be no stopping me now!

EmeraldRoulette · 03/01/2026 20:37

@Shittyyear2025 thank you for agreeing with me that that's a shitty job

I did it, and I pretty much haven't done anything else today. Unless being pissed off at the cold counts as a constructive activity.

Tomorrow, I'll be at my mum's and I guarantee by the time I get back, I won't be in the mood for doing any shitty jobs.

I haven't done the dishes yet. Just watching some TV and then I'll get that done.

psychologically, I do seem to be better off having a blitz day. Not for things like dishes and supermarket shopping, but the paperwork that was next on the list - stuff like that. The wardrobe is also pretty chaotic. I don't know - the more I realise this stuff is endless, the more I'm put off doing it. I'm never in a position where I can't find anything important though.

I've got to bundle up some stuff to take to mum's tomorrow. Hopefully the place will feel better when that's out of the way.

SemmaLina · 03/01/2026 21:11

Christmas decorations packed away and in the attic
Hoovered and dusted around the area they were

Weather was in our favour , we went for a 2 hour walk , so make up not sorted

But , ironing basket emptied and everything put away

And most importantly ,the last bit of Christmas cake finished , Christmas plate washed and cake box put away

BuddhaAtSea · 03/01/2026 21:19

I’m in!
Yesterday I returned some stuff I ordered online. I hate doing that.
Today I was at work, just got back, but I’ll tidy the bookcase, I hate it every time I walk past it!

Moltenpink · 03/01/2026 21:27

Day 2, i sold and packaged some books on the World of Books app.

The very first thing everyone needs to do is MAKE A LIST!
I love a list 😂. I have a notebook by my bed that I keep my list in. On NYE, I started a new list and have already ticked off a couple of things - clearing out the fridge to get rid of the leftover Xmas food and sorting out the freezer, sorting out my financial stuff and clearing out the spare bedroom.
On my list, I also write down how long I think each task might take and also prioritise them by colour coding them (I know, I’m sad).
I find it cathartic to look at the list at bed time to see what I can cross off, what I can do the next day and to add anything else that might have come up.
Off to de Christmas the house now!

Top recommendation - also keep a list of things that you’ve done, a list to feel good about.
My to do list just gets longer and messier until I end up abandoning it and starting a new one!

Extraenergyneeded · 03/01/2026 21:45

Yes please!
Tomorrow I will clear out the fridge which I have been procrastinating about for a few days.

canyon2000 · 03/01/2026 21:48

This is such a good idea! This thread inspired me to finally do my self assessment today!😁
