One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

Sounds great I’ve been poorly for three months but once I’ve got some strength I was going to do one awful job/chore per day and once the house is back to an ok level start the decorating and diy list.

I was poorly too and then my husband so things declined. Found a one off cleaner and got them to bring everything up to the right level. Tasks are now easier

Today: Transferred all birthdays from 2025 calendar to 2026 and thrown last year's away. Renewed library books online and checked when my next repeat prescription is due. Cut up Christmas cards for next year's labels and recycled the discarded bits. Made last batch of mince pies to use up the mincemeat. Cleaned the edges of internal doors where grubby hands have left marks.
Tomorrow I need to: book car in for MOT and service, renew road tax and look for new insurance deals. Check my water tariff to see if my dd can be reduced.

@Shittyyear2025 I’m in.

I’ve been watching clutterbug on YouTube whilst doing my shitty bathroom
job that I’ve put off for at least two years.

Been digging out the grout and silicon around my bath/shower as the silicone has been grotty for years and the grouts needed scrubbing and bleaching for years (wasn’t done the best anyways!). That was yesterday. Today I’ve siliconed it all and finished the grouting across the walls.

job done. Knackered. Clean up the mess and tools now rather than leaving them all in the hallway in a pile like normal..

Came back from holiday mid December. Suitcase contained just the unworn clothes. Never got around to totally unpacking so just adding more to it for holiday in 4 weeks time. Everything is rolled so doesn't crease

Comicalblackcat · 04/01/2026 18:39

I love this post what a brilliant idea, I’m joining in. Congratulations to all of you that have been doing a crappy job each day. ❤️

EmeraldRoulette · 04/01/2026 18:40

@EducatingArti thank you
I didn't know this was a thing with reels and stuff!

OneFunnyPearlTurtle · 04/01/2026 18:43

It feels really good to get shitty jobs done. Last week I sorted out our bathroom cupboard and moved all the things I need quick access to to the lower shelves and threw out lots of out of date/half used products. Today I’ve caught up on ALL the ironing and put it away and I’ve also cleared out our carrier bag mountain

Mydogisagentleman · 04/01/2026 18:45

I've been quite productive for 4 days.
Tree down, shite in the loft, tidying pantry cupboard.
Tomorrow is washing the smelly dog day

We're planning to get a lodger. DH is going to Spain for the year soon. I'm going for 90 days - cheers brexit.
It's all so tedious but needed doing

EmeraldRoulette · 02/01/2026 23:21

This is a great idea and I should really do it

If I did it, tomorrow's job would be something paperwork related. But in reality, it might just be a basic tidy, laundry and change bedding. I tend to save the extra tasks and try and blitz them one day a week or so when they're really getting on my nerves.

I struggle with the stuff because it's so boring. There's literally no other reason. I know I'm being crap.

Tidying and reorganising is boring, but I've done all my cupboards while listening to an audiobook. Worked for me.

Jamfirstest · 04/01/2026 18:49

Yesterday I paid a bill that was overdue and ordered a fire extinguisher and looked at the scary quote for my tax return which was quite cheap.
this is a great thread.
today is especially shitty as dog has hurt himself but I’ve told the family they are to start assembling the Xmas decks on the dining room table only and I will start packing them up slowly.

RedFatball · 04/01/2026 18:49

Done the Christmas decorations which I hate so good to get that sorts.

tomorrow I'm back at work, so am going to do the entrance hall and chuck out shoes when I get home before the hockey run (if not frozen off...)

Fgfgfg · 04/01/2026 16:15

Just found this thread and I'm not going to count day to day jobs but have my eye on the basket of doom by the bed. Perfume, cleansers, medication etc all piled into one basket. I'll let you know how I get on...

Update: the basket is sorted.
Have thrown away lots of things including several empty tubes of antibiotic cream, empty body lotion, empty packet of B12, and an Aveda hair thickening spray that was expensive but crap (hence the reluctance to bin it). I have discovered three part used bottles of the same cleanser which will save me buying any for a while and everything is now arranged neatly and I can see what I've got. Taking a few unused bottles of perfume into work in case anyone wants them.
Next job could be either the cutlery drawer (where do the crumbs come from?) or the freezer (there are too many packets of pitta bread containing a single, lonely, inedible pitta covered in ice).

PermanentTemporary · 04/01/2026 18:55

Good work all!

My update, bought the stamps and have enveloped and addressed my HMRC document. Alongside that I’ve got a birthday present and another person’s card ready to go.

Pinkrinse · 04/01/2026 18:55

good idea, defrosted freezer so far this year, I need a list, then I can do one a day.

WorkerBee123 · 04/01/2026 19:00

This is a brilliant idea. I’m in! Decs down today, tax bill paid a couple of days ago (VERY shit) and will organise a cupboard tomorrow.

WorkerBee123 · 04/01/2026 19:01

Ooo also, going to make a shit jobs list tomorrow on one of my shiny new organiser notepads I got for Christmas. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

RedFatball · 04/01/2026 19:03

I have also made breakfast and lunch to take to work tomorrow and a spare portion for the day after so starting the year off properly with nutrition and finance.

my other shitty job for tomorrow is trying to get a GP appointment for myself which I suspect is going to be a true ordeal...

justasking111 · 04/01/2026 19:13

What are the fellas doing. On my SJ list is sanding down, repainting skirting, patching and repainting the plastered wall above. Where DHs puppy chewed it away over a year ago.

Today DP has been dealing with masses of recycling and four overflowing litter trays. It's snowed and the cats have all refused to go outside for even a wee.

Soontobe60 · 04/01/2026 19:30

Today’s SJ was emptying my very full car because it’s being collected tomorrow as I’m about to get my new one delivered. It was freezing, eye-blinding sunshine and annoying!
I now have:
2 high backed booster seats
1 long umbrella
1 folding chair
2 massive coats for if I ever break down
1 car vacuum cleaner
1 large shopping bag full of crap I’ve not seen since I got the car 3 years ago
3 large cans of de-icer (saved me going out to buy some)
17 assorted pens
£4.73 in loose change
4 air fresheners from the car wash place
3 half empty tubes of hand cream and 4 emery boards
2 pairs of sunglasses and 3 glasses cases
a shopping bag full of other shopping bags with about a million old receipts from various supermarkets in them
So after emptying the car, I then had to sort out my kitchen which was full of crap from said car! I had allocated 10 minutes in my head for this shitty job - it took me over an hour. 😂

Dollyfloss · 04/01/2026 19:34

My plan for the New Year is to tackle one room at a time and then clean from top to bottom, otherwise I get distracted.
Today I’ve taken the decs down in the kitchen, hallway and downstairs loo and cleaned thoroughly. Tomorrow: orangery and living room! Ds is back to school tomorrow and I need to clean his room and change bedding - I’ve not even been in there for about 3 weeks!

Once I’ve done all main rooms I need to go to the tip. One thing I really need to do is get rid of all the Christmas decs I don’t use any more or that are broken. All cardboard etc from Xmas still in the garage. We’ve got a large 6 bedroom house and it sometimes feels like a full time job trying to keep it clean and organised.

Wow, so do you not see him for 9 months of the year or does he come back to the UK?

petitpasta · 04/01/2026 19:39

LilyCanna · 03/01/2026 21:36

Top recommendation - also keep a list of things that you’ve done, a list to feel good about.
My to do list just gets longer and messier until I end up abandoning it and starting a new one!

Agree with this! I started a.monthly achievements list last year and it's been fab to look back on all the things I did, even the little things that I would have forgotten.

Two SJs ticked off for me, cleaned and organised the pan cupboard and swapped the herbs and spices with the baking ingredients so that the herbs and spices that I use regularly are in the more accessible cupboard. Goodness knows why I haven't done this before - literally took 30 minutes but it will make my life so much easier

Jamfirstest · 04/01/2026 19:44

@justasking111dp is finally painting sds room. If he tries to get involved with my jobs he gets kicked out back to his own job!!

Amsylou · 04/01/2026 20:11

I’m in! I had a goal of sorting out one room per week (declutter, clean, tidy). Managed most of the kitchen yesterday and a few drawers in the living room day. Plus took the Xmas decs down. I need to finish the kitchen and a few more drawers in the living room next, then onto DS5’s room once he’s back at school to sort through the toy chaos!
