A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Im very angry about hospitality. It supported me through college, was a second job at weekends when i worked. Saw my children through the same. Its going to crucify our tourism . Double rates on accommodation already affecting pricing. Nowhere to eat. Might as well get on a plane.

strawberrybubblegum · 07/01/2026 13:47

Labour really, really hate the countryside, don't they?

One nail after another in the coffin.

Farming inheritance tax, reduced subsidies, increased, costly regulations. Complete destruction of the whole hunting industry - even drag hunts - which will also affect parts of the racing industry. Increased development: solar farms, cpos and green belt house building, with development targets hugely increased in the countryside while city ones decrease. Much higher rates increases in the countryside than in cities, putting all rural businesses at risk. Rural bus fares up. Now the end of country pubs. Even private schools vat hits the countryside more, since the small private schools most affected are common rurally where there's less choice of schools and they may be far away.

I think it's just a lack of thought by Labour, and Labour not understanding or valuing rural life. But it's hard not to wonder whether it's deliberate: aimed at weakening communities who have a different 'vision' of Britain.

EmeraldRoulette · 07/01/2026 14:05

@strawberrybubblegum in general, I don't think the current lot like local community, for a range of reasons -it's back to the "somewheres" and "anywheres" as per David Goodhart if anyone knows his work. It's harder to sell globoslop to a connected community.

@redange in the early days of being Mayor, Sadiq Khan did put quite a lot of effort into nightlife. I do think that we are also seeing the impact of technology on nightlife. My impression is that 20 somethings have not been interested in it for quite some time now, and in the right conditions we might see a resurgence in maybe 20 years? Just in the way that these things go in cycles.

Round my way, daytime clubs are quite popular and I've spoken to a couple of people who say that it's partly because of getting home safely and partly because it enables them to just get on with the rest of their life without having a massive interruption of being out all night. For me that was just normal, but I can see why it wouldn't be. And I can see why day clubs are helpful. Here they are mostly attached to things like Sunday brunch, usually bottomless brunch now.

I went to see Pete Tong at the Royal Albert Hall last summer and it was a mix of people from 20 to 60. I was expecting there to be a higher proportion of older people, but there wasn't - so the music is still of interest.

I don't have one drink if I'm driving. Sadly, I can't drive anymore but that was always my policy - not to have even one. I thought that was pretty common?

Absolutely.

Also job losses in the private school fiasco hitting small rural villages and towns.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 07/01/2026 14:10

I really really want to see a breakdown in the traffic offence statistics.

Where, what kind of driver, whether it's a new driver, urban conditions or rural, also location when alcohol related.

Drivers age and nationality and where their driving licence was issued.

Has anyone seen anything helpful (and vaguely reliable) about this seized Russian-registered tanker from Venezuela, that hasn’t been reported on the main news outlets?

I find this very, very strange - particularly reports that the Russians sent a submarine to escort it. Why? What use would a sub be except to torpedo US ships, which was never going to happen?

Maybe it’s just a runaway Russian ship that the US is chasing because it was embarrassing to have it slip through. But then why bother with an apparently empty tanker?

TBF, the polls could change…

…like a man could change into a woman.

Indeed 😂😂

Some wishful thinking here.

EasternStandard · 07/01/2026 16:43

@DenizenOfAisleOfShameI’ve been avoiding the news so I’m not sure about that one.

On another note there’s a post on a media request thread about the poll used for the recent Reform switch on here, it seems mnhq did use a poll but I’m not sure how they do it.

As an aside if anyone at MNHQ has been unaware of how aggro some Labour / left posters can be that thread is a good example 😬

It was one of the main items on the news channel this morning, and now being featured again as it's been now been seized by the US - apparently with more than a little help from the RAF.

Same. I’m incandescent. The fuckers who excuse this are part of it too. I’d better avoid that for a while. They can pick up the outcome. Bloody Starmer apologists.

Same here.
Not sending his sons.
Totally misreading the room again.
No-one wants to send their sons to prop up Zelensky’s corrupt regime in a futile battle.

EmeraldRoulette · 07/01/2026 18:22

I just remembered something

If Starmer is going to offer extended opening hours to pubs, is that any use? I'm sure I read something about how most pubs, and possibly restaurants too , are getting most of their weekend trade during the daytime now. So that's basically for food and football.

I have one local pub that started closing at 10 pm except on Fridays and Saturday

Initially the owner made a slightly odd comment - he said the people who were in the pub for the last hour were often the most unpleasant - but given how many people don't drink these days, I was a bit surprised by that. Plus, it's pretty quiet around here. Anyway, the next time I saw him, he echoed sentiment about afternoon trade being more important at the weekend - and now the pub closes at 10 pm on Friday and Saturday night as well. So basically never open later than 10 pm. I think on a Monday and Tuesday he might close earlier.

So I was just wondering who will really benefit from extended opening hours. I'm not judging the entire country's pubs by my local ones, it's definitely a quiet place I'm in now. But when I left London, I was under the impression a lot of the outer zone pubs were in the same situation - peak activity when sports matches are being shown and when families can come in and have food.

A completely different landscape to what it was 20 years ago - which is roughly when Tony Blair extended opening hours? Actually, if you think about what drinking culture was like then versus what it is now, it is a massive change.

and I think drug use is much more widespread than it used to be. Don't actually have any figures on that.

EmeraldRoulette · 07/01/2026 18:36

Not going to do a thread about a thread or even reference a specific thread

But there are a few properly funny threads around today. Or just the title. Or I'm just in a silly mood and finding everything hilarious. 😂

That thread is something else. I nearly commented lastnight but couldn't be bothered with another bunfight.
I'm glad I didn't now, reading more of it! When your enemy is making a mistake, don't interrupt etc.
I hope Justine is reading it. It's all there if she's interested.

A Reform voter has bravely posted recently, no doubt they'll be ridiculed on that thread (and elsewhere) by the 12%.

Ikr it made me laugh. There’s people saying go on post then as if anyone is going to fall into that bear trap.

I’m wondering if Justine might have a slip of the finger on the posting button for the shame on you posters. I’d be tempted. All that harassing.

I like to think that Justine has handed the Labour mob a noose. Wishful thinking perhaps, but they haven't helped themselves. Best leave them too it. 😁

Are this Government really really stupid, how does allowing a Pub to open longer hours when 1st: they can not afford the Rent 2nd: 3rd: Energy Prices 4th: Beer and Food Costs 5th: Illegal to drink and Drive more than 1 Pint 6th: Wage costs 7th: Nobody going out due to demographic changes, cost of living and also down to the Government and media's continued, calling out of the type of people 'who' are likely to frequent the local Wetherspoons at 11 AM on a Wednesday.

Sorry, the future for ordinary or average people to afford even an average night or meal out is extremely troublesome. There, will always be Five Star Hotels and three Michelin Star Restaurants for footballers and celebrities . The, writing is on the wall for 'family' restaurants such as Pizza Express where a family of four having a 'Pizza' for gods sake costs around £90-£100 and a steak in Miller and Carter will set you back £35 (in what really is a modern day Berni Inn) which were deemed to be affordable for 'ordinary' people in the 1970s.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 07/01/2026 19:08

I hadn’t looked at that MN press thread about Reform but went there after reading about it on this thread.

What a fantastic spectacle that is! It’s like a particularly unhinged debate at a third rate uni’s student union. I can’t imagine ever voting Reform, but I begin to see the party’s entertainment value as a giant trolling operation against left-wingers.

Farage should get an Arts Council grant for encouraging mass performative political histrionics and theatrical showing off.

redange · 07/01/2026 19:24

Current situation in Minnesota !

38thparallel · 07/01/2026 20:22

Why can't the Labour Party/Khan introduce laws to reduce Muggings, Phone Robberies, Gun transportation and other serious issues and not the final nail in the coffin for the Hospitality industry

I agree. Khan seems to be in complete denial about crime in London.

EmeraldRoulette · 07/01/2026 20:24

I still haven't looked at all the stuff about MN and Reform.

Is it true that one in five - presumably of those asked - said they would vote Reform? That doesn't really seem worth the headlines it seems to have generated.

if it's one in five based on some kind of AI generated analysis, then still not a big deal.

I see Laila Cunningham has put herself forward as a mayoral candidate for London.

I didn't know much about her until I watched the Together conference - or I watched a bit of it - and I thought she was pretty good.

It was also really nice to see people from across a wide political spectrum having a nice conference with civilised debate on opposing views - I don't often wish I'd gone into London to see something but I thought that looked pretty good and had a nice vibe.

London Mayor election is ages away though. And kind of nothing to do with me 😂 old habits die hard I suppose.
