A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Maduro going is probably a good thing, but the way in which it happened - Trump making a unilateral call with zero congressional oversight - is seriously scary for me. It is one aspiring dictator deposing another in order to grab further power for himself.

Absolutely. It is terrifying.

justasking111 · 03/01/2026 13:00

We went to Venezuela 30 years ago. Holidayed in Margarita. The people were lovely. We drove around the island saw the other side of the coin. Adults and children crippled by polio. Children begging. It was sobering. Back at the resort there were short fat men with gold chains, bracelets, rings, who had with them beautiful young girls who were tattooed at the base of their backs. We were told it was a slave type mark. There were security guards with machine guns protecting them.

Was all quite surreal that Christmas

redange · 03/01/2026 13:11

Maduro was given the chance to leave Venezuela but chose to stay, he has been a nuisance since following Hugo Chavez. Chavez took Venezuela from one of the richest South American Countries, to now being the poorest. Venezuela have been threatening Guyana, hence some of this action is to upheld the American Oil presence in Guyana which now has a GDP Capita of $31K and is the fastest growing economy in the world.

The challenge for Guyana is that this 'wealth' is used for the good of the small population of 836,000 and not just for the Exxon Mobil shareholders.

Richard Walker/ Rory Stewart and their like are the reason why the Conservatives are currently where they are. Both,of these have never been Conservatives, just people because of their backgrounds that could not have joined the Labour Party. Walker is someone know doubt who has always got whatever he asked for, hence when denied a Safe 'Seat' by CCHQ jumped ship to Labour ! No proper Conservative could ever jump ship to the Labour party. Only impostors who think they have the god given right to be elected.

@EasternStandard if you're curious, Tousi TV is covering it on YouTube. I think he was mostly raised in Iran as a child, but I'm not 100% sure.

I gather women are removing their head coverings in the street.

Trump is obviously taking it very seriously, implying that they're prepared to intervene if any protesters come to harm.

Another reason I'm not paying much attention - as well as being worried that we will be asked to intervene - is that it's not unusual for these green shoots to appear in these sorts of countries and then it all just goes horribly wrong.

Anyway, I hope the protestors are all okay - desperate times etc. Apparently, inflation is so bad there, it's a case of carrying cash around in trolleys.

Thanks for this it is very worrying. So much going on rn, those people are so incredibly brave.

CambridgeSingers · 03/01/2026 14:11

@CaveMum i really do hope they go after ‘horse riding’ in EHCPs as some kind of luxury poster child ‘look at those middle class knobs’ choice because it’s excellent for core strength which of you know anything about kids with balance and muscle issues, is vital. My local stables has tonnes of children with disabilities who are not remotely well off and it’s completely unflashy. Yes and to say nothing of bonding with horses.

that one will seriously backfire on them.

but I’m sure they should all be send to trampoline parks instead because god forbid a disabled child should have a choice of activity.

CambridgeSingers · 03/01/2026 14:17

Regardless of Maduro, my worry is that if we normalise unilateral military strikes to regime change - what’s to stop China doing this in Taiwan, Russia trying it in Poland - anywhere the big powers think they want to effect regime change and their elite military can pull it off..

as it is, Trump will be thinking, let’s go for Iran next…

EmeraldRoulette · 03/01/2026 15:02

@TheNuthatch thank you

Some people might be interested in this Triggernometry from last week. I haven't had chance to listen to it. Francis mum is from Venezuela I think.

I suppose one argument for the air strikes is that Maduro is not legitimately in power? But I understand the concern re Congress.
Venezuelans on my X timeline appear jubilant but that could just be the algorithm.
I hope this does turn out well for them.

SpaceRaccoon · 03/01/2026 17:12

On another note, I'm pretty appalled at the UK government response to the Somaliland issue.

This is part of a long game though I thought? Not sure which administration did it but Maduro's relatives were imprisoned on drug charges about ten years ago. I thought the US were trying to get changes there for a while.

Venezuela and Iran having this at the same time isn't likely to be a coincidence - or am
I going wildly off track? International politics isn't my bag.

Trump is never in favour of putting US boots on the ground is he? And I don't blame him.

CambridgeSingers · 03/01/2026 18:09

Just listening to the rest is politics live -
it is clear it has been planned for some months @EmeraldRoulette - and Maduro does indeed sound awful. But wasn’t Trump against being the world’s policeman?

redange · 03/01/2026 18:13

Venezuela, under Maduro have been constantly threatening Guyana with invasion which has a lot of Oil being drilled by American Companies. This, also sends a message to IGRC in Tehran to watch themselves in regards to any brutal crackdown on protests, with Israel ready to go.

Yeah, he was

Perhaps this seems like an easy win

There was an on camera moment where he expressed his frustration quite clearly, I think he swore which upset a lot of people, and I thought that's when the realisation was shifting, that he has to get involved in stuff.

Perhaps he's done a U-turn and thinks if he's got to get involved, then he might as well do what he wants.

CambridgeSingers · 03/01/2026 18:52

I hope the US does work towards the end of the Iranian regime. But I think it would take very careful planning and thought. The Iranian people don’t want to look like they’re doing the US’s bidding.

Some backdoor weapons supplies to help the Iranian people drive out the self-professed genocidal mullahs might work. Saudi would probably help out too, behind the scenes.

“Roberts said Mumsnet users had “always leaned slightly centre left”, towards Labour, and were typically supportive of more funding for the NHS and schools.
“But,” she said, “I think they also have witnessed a big decline in how they perceive the NHS is working for them, how they perceive schools are working for them. Equally, the immigration factor, the strain on services that’s coming from the drip feed of immigrants coming into their communities.”“

Mumsnet mothers have always leaned Labour. Now Reform is ahead

Rising support for Nigel Farage’s party — if not the man himself — may worry the government

It’s good it’s gone down, a few threads still run in that pro Labour way with posters trying to get people off. Better when it’s not like that.

It's the same 5-10 posters usually. Or useful idiots who just copy and paste lists of 'good' things done by Labour without actually considering how they're going / the economic effect of the policy.

Legolava · 04/01/2026 11:46

I think MN starting to clamp down on all the bot accusations and bullying has helped as that’s what it was. It’s possible to think governments of all colours over the years have done bad things. It’s also possible to think that this government is the worst of the bunch for whatever reason. A core group of posters couldn’t handle that and absolutely would pile on to try and shut down anything negative about this government. It still happens now but to a lesser extent. It is a very small and vocal minority now that a pro Labour.

They absolutely aren’t working for schools. I know, I work in one and let me tell you, I am no fan of Gove and his curriculum either. However what this government are doing for schools is even more harmful. Ofsted reforms are diabolical. What a waste of money. They learned nothing from previous failures.

Only now are some starting to realise how divisive and spiteful this government can be. That’s how they are ruling right now. It was obviously fine to be spiteful about some working class children and SEND children losing their private school place. These same people are now seeing the same divisive rhetoric used against vulnerable children in the state sector. Not so fun now to pile in.

Yep it’s still there, just siphoned off a bit more where they can pat each other on the back. Such a shame the site became that but at least it’s changing.

EasternStandard · 04/01/2026 12:08

I will add I’m grateful to anyone sticking in there. When there’s pile ons it can be fuck it this place is bizarrely diehard Labour and not bother. I want more to read than that hope people are not so put off posting if they see others doing it.

I’m always pleased when someone stands up for themselves or others against the hectoring.
