A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Yes, happy New Year!

EasternStandard · 01/01/2026 07:52

Morning happy new year

Feels good to go into 2026. Hopefully Labour will leave us alone more, understand how disliked they are and be smaller, less arrogant

TheNuthatch · 01/01/2026 09:32

Good morning 😁

Happy New Year to you all. I fell asleep before midnight so have yet to watch the fireworks. Glad you're feeling better Fluffy.
You really need to watch TopGun!

2026 has been dubbed the "year of proof" by Morgan McSweeney. Starmer is planning to woo us all by making all of our lives miraculously better this year, after spending his first 18 months in power raising inflation, killing businesses, and costing jobs.

The UK has the lowest investment across the G7 according to The Times.

Britain has suffered the worst investment levels in the G7, prompting Labour MPs to hit out at Rachel Reeves for driving down business confidence with “broken commitments”.

On a positive note, we can vote out this dreadful government in 3 years. 2029 feels a little closer this morning.

I would be willing to applaud this government if the huge tax rises really did lead to marked improvement in public services. But that hasn’t happened and there’s nothing to suggest it will happen.

At the moment it looks very much like mere redistribution to Labour’s client interests in the public sector.

The irony.
Did they use drones to create a giant image of Starmer in the sky? 😂

I can’t read it but the headline is spot on.

Here’s the gist.

Sir Keir Starmer ends 2025 as the most unpopular British prime minister in polling history, while Rachel Reeves, his chancellor, plumbs similar depths of public dislike. But one thing still surprises the pollsters: the level of apparent hatred felt towards them.

Starmer and Reeves have made plenty of mistakes, as even their allies admit, and the change they promised has been slow in coming.

But for technocratic, low-key politicians, the level of opprobrium they attract from voters is striking. “I can normally understand where the public are coming from but I admit this is surprising,” said Luke Tryl, of the More in Common polling organisation.

“There’s a real dislike, even loathing of Starmer and Reeves.” “In focus groups, people say Starmer is a liar and only said what he thought he needed to say to get elected,” Tryl added. “Reeves is often deemed to be uncaring. People say she’s targeting people who can’t fight back.”

Another polling director, who declined to be named, said of Starmer: “For a rather dull and inoffensive politician, Starmer does generate remarkable levels of hate.”

Thank you 😊

Wow, strong words from the pollsters but it does reflect reality. I can't remember another government despised as much as this one. I'm surprised how much it comes up in conversation amongst my circle of F and F. I have never loathed a politician of any stripe like I do Starmer. The have governed with spite, told countless lies, and pitted groups against each other. You reap what you sow.
I would love to know who the anonymous pollster is. Odd that they felt the need to stay anonymous.

Part of this surprises me, and it’s not the loathed bit, it’s that anyone is still talking about dullness in that way. What surprises me is the opposite of the pollsters pretty much 😬

Dull is not a word I would use to describe Starmer & Co.

And he’s certainly not inoffensive. It sounds like some subjectivity from the speaker there.

Pacificsunshine · 01/01/2026 11:02

Agree.

When they have to target specific groups hard to raise the taxes they need for their aspirations, it’s no surprise that the targeted groups loath them.

The threads in the lead up to the private school VAT tax raid are instructive.

A penny on the basic rate would everyone grumbling, but the sense of unfairness would not be there .

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 01/01/2026 11:03

I think Starmer and Reeves’s manner does for them. People can smell arrogance and self-righteousness in politicians a mile away. They’re also both painful to listen to. Starmer has the added problem of being a self-important metropolitan lawyer, a breed that few can warm to.

The perception of dishonesty and hypocrisy completes the picture.

Yeah, agree.
The spite and nastiness was evident in the way the policies were announced too. As you say, the PS Vat was a clear example of that.

I can’t face listening to Starmer’s new year message, but the BBC reports that

“Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has promised to "defeat the decline and division offered by others" in his new year message”.

”Offered by others”?!? The decline and division that I see has come about entirely due to Labour’s policies!

Agree with you all - and that’s just one reason I love this thread.

I also believe that more and more people are absolutely sick of Starmer and Reeves.

EasternStandard · 01/01/2026 11:56

I think fewer and fewer can even stomach listening to them or watching their statements anymore. It’s pretty bad when the best course is just blocking out the gov.
