A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I was thinking just the other day that making private education even more expensive means that the rich cream rises to the top. Will one day be running the country business wise.
Everyone else with minimum wage rising annually will just be cogs in the machine serving the elite or on benefits. It's chilling.

It was always the Labour Parties aim to make Private School the domain of the Elite ... Secretly, they want Private/Public Schools to exist but only available to the Richest therefore becoming perfect Ammo for 'Class Warfare' and a creation of targets. They, attack the 'moderately' well off , but praise the seriously 'rich' Gary Neville Dale Vince types. They, love seriously rich Pop Stars, footballers or anyone they consider to be on side and Working Class.

Yes until one of these decides to support Tories 😂. Then they are ‘disappointed’.

TheNuthatch · 31/12/2025 15:22

@redange You make a good point there about Labour and private schools. I think you may be onto something about them not wanting less privileged dc from benefiting from private schools. Its in Labour's political interest for private schools to be exclusively for the very wealthy elite. Chilling indeed.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Fabian society. I don't know enough about them to make a judgement. I do think its understandable that many are concerned about it though, and its worthy of discussion. It was pointed out to me recently that the governor of the BofE is also a member.
When you have a government losing trust by making decisions that appear to be against UK interests, people will understandably question their motives.

I enjoy the luvvie endorsement of Labour. I reckon they lose several hundred thousand votes every time some self-regarding actor, TV ‘personality’ or pop singer says how much they admire Labour.

I seem to recall Russell Brand endorsing Labour and interviewing Ed Miliband. We don’t hear a lot about that nowadays. 🤷‍♀️

I agree - talking of which we haven’t heard much from the luvvies who were so keen to support Alaa Abdel Fattah.

Have a lovely New Years Eve everyone, whatever you're up to. 🍾

We were supposed to be going out to a big gathering tonight, but now staying in. I've been very social throughout xmas. Its been lovely, but v busy and I've had enough of people. 😂

Take away + pyjamas + cocktails = bliss 😊

See you all in 2026!

I often think of Ricky Gervais: “You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg”. I saw him live last month and he was brilliant.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 31/12/2025 17:03

And, to echo TheNuthatch, have a wonderful New Year’s Eve.

🥂

I don’t think the argument that VAT has made private schools more elite will get very far. While it is true, many people already saw private schools as elite and unattainable. A few families being taken down a peg is a feature, not a bug for them.

I think that private schools are demonstrably better and we should be looking for ways to make them affordable to a greater number of families. The more children who benefit the better. I suspect there would be tax arrangements and public/private partnerships that would be excellent value to the taxpayer that can never get off the ground for ideological reasons.

Yes we’re sadly very behind on this. Other countries work out how to lessen the state burden and get better results. We’re too mean, too spiteful. I can only hope the next GE we’re not.

It hasn't achieved anything but I'll will and more pressure on the state school system. It certainly hasn't resulted in 6500 teachers. Didn't Badenoch say in one of the pmqs that we now have fewer teachers than we did at the general election?

Yes she said "wrong, there are 400 fewer teachers in England.
Based on these figures I'm assuming:

School workforce in England, Reporting year 2024

Annual statistics on teachers and support staff (TAs) in England. Age, gender, ethnicity, pupil teacher ratio (PTR), retention, pay, subject taught and absence.

We've just run the gauntlet of being sociable and have the house back to ourselves with a family games night planned. I'd say a quiet night in but it gets quite competitive 😂

Hope everyone sees in a happy and peaceful New Year!

But who needs teachers when you can distract the faithful with soggy toast?

Good on her. I’m appreciating the masses of positive messages on her SM v Starmer who is being skewered

EasternStandard · 31/12/2025 18:32

We’ve got a mini party here, getting stuff ready. Eldest dc going out, I quite like thinking about how nice it is to be young at NYE

Thanks again for these threads, lovely people

NoWordForFluffy · 31/12/2025 18:35

Happy new year, all of you sensible, rational people in my phone!

Here's hoping next year is a better one for politics and the country. 🤞

Have a great time Eastern. 😁
My dc are all out partying this year too. Good to see them enjoying life.

My MIL just turned up out of the blue. DH made her a cuppa, and he put it in my Starmer is a massive tit mug. 😱 (She's a huge Labour fan).
She hasn't noticed yet. 🤣🤣

Toast, pate, crisps, ice cream and Margaritas here. Very glad to have found this thread this year, relieved to find a political home on Mumsnet.

Doubt we will be awake at midnight unless the dogs are disturbed by fireworks so I’ll wish us all forbearance and a healthy supply of wine (or other vice of choice) for 2026.
I know we are going to need both 🤬

DH was going out to a party, I decided to stay home and chill. He's now decided to stay home. It's so cold and such a long evening.

I do like the fireworks, especially the drone displays.

Happy new year all 🎆🎇

NoWordForFluffy · 31/12/2025 19:04

I'm more likely to be asleep at midnight than not. I'm tired generally and have had a sicky headache all day.

We were never doing anything exciting anyway!

EmeraldRoulette · 31/12/2025 21:30

@NoWordForFluffy I hope you feel better soon

Happy New Year, everybody! 🥳 I did actually have an invite to go out and I turned it down which is very unusual for me. But it seemed like a really long evening and I only knew two other people. And the transport home etc. Had a friend round just now and we managed to have dinner somewhere nice without paying a shocking price. She also wanted to go home and sleep in her own bed so she's gone now.

Must be getting old! Main thing for next year is going to be turning 50! Yikes!

I turn 50 this year too, @EmeraldRoulette! '76 is a great vintage. 😁

I had a power nap for an hour (I was watching Top Gun for the first time...still haven't watched it! 🤣) and woke in time to see the new year in. The headache went during the nap, hurrah!
