Over inappropriate behaviour towards women. Anyone surprised?

How was it legal to be nude on stage? I'm surprised!

It was the 1960s! Nudity was becoming rather popular on stage. Hair (the musical) opened in London in 1968 (the year before I did my O levels).

Whether the so-called counterculture was a good thing or not is debatable. It may be why we’re in such a state now. I certainly approved at the time, but then I was only 15.

Oh right, I like Hair, I forgot though that ofc that includes stage nudity. I suppose it's legal as comes under 'artistic purposes' or similar?

One of my friends was actually in Hair recently (I'm at uni), I'll have to ask her 🤣

Interesting and insightful pov @RedToothBrush
I wondered / couldn’t figure out the dynamics.
He was certainly “punching”.

bombastix · 22/12/2025 11:46

The problems are legal aren’t they? The longer businesses keep predatory men on the books, the greater the volume of complaints, the more costs to pay to manage it, and then eventually someone decides this person is not worth keeping.

It is very expensive to keep using lawyers and paying women off. Particularly if you are an individual rather than a huge media organization

MyCoralHare · 22/12/2025 11:48

I saw Stephen Dillane as Hamlet on an A Level trip in 1997 or 98. He literally leapt across the stage naked with everything flapping. Not sure it was strictly necessary.

Edited to add I have no idea whether or not the teachers were expecting it!

Mropalsmusic · 22/12/2025 12:33

It’s awful that he was even set to appear at a children’s book festival before this. Publishing has really not covered itself in glory with this one. It was already very clear to everyone in the industry that he was not an appropriate person to be around children and yet he was still getting booked for these major festivals.

I must’ve missed this at the time but this was from back in June. Shame on all the top decision makers who kept this man’s career going : https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvg59q1xgv8o

And when men like this do get dropped, they claim it's all cancel culture and they're being martyred for free speech and their "political views", and 5 minutes later they're being invited to galas by Donald Trump.

See alleged rapist Russell Brand.

PerkingFaintly · 22/12/2025 12:57

I would be entirely unsurprised if Walliams leapt onto the bandwagon with Brand.

Do you need any alternative ideas? Sure we can help. How old is he?
Lissa Evan's Wed Wabbit and Small Change For Stuart Little have been loved recently by a 9 year old here and I've been asked for more of hers, also The Land of Roar series has been a huge hit with the new one (5th?) on pre-order.

I didn't realise there was a 5th LOR! Great news, thanks

I think re my nephew he's got some neuro diversity going in which means he only likes what he knows, and it's not a battle I'm going to choose to try and expand his horizons. I just want to make my SIL happy so have very grudgingly ordered some secondhand DW to keep family peace

Or, in the case of Brand, reinvent themselves as Jesus.

You could get a black pen and redact sentences. Seems to be the in thing these days.

Also Ancient Greeks. Pederasty - summed up in the phrase, 'boys for pleasure, women for children' - was socially acceptable in many ancient cultures. Whichever lens you look through, it was an abuse of power then, and is most certainly abusive now.
And DW is a slimy, obnoxious creep.

Or there's the (alleged) phrase "https://x.com/DalrympleWill/status/868436468066373633 "A woman for duty, a boy for pleasure, and melons for ecstacy. "

I used to work ar a college with a woman who sang in a band called "Melons for Ecstacy." and who introduced this idea to me. It took me YEARS to realise there were at least two different interpretations of the last phrase.

William Dalrymple (@DalrympleWill) on X

"Women for duty, boys for pleasure, but for real ecstasy, a chilled melon." Turkish proverb

Have I got the right guy? More clues please!

It's bigger on the inside than on the outside. And the compagnion is always a wide-eyed young woman.

Brave and courageous male ally to equally brave and stunning ~ women ~

Strongly and selflessly disagrees with Kemi Badenoch and JK Rowling in public (as all people do who are salty that they could not write what she has written even if they had 500 years, 500 typewriters, and 500 monkeys, btw).

I nad a situation on X after the Huntingdon train incident where because I posted about the fact that it was wrongly assumed that the perpetrator was a Muslim asylum seeker, a white British man told me he hoped to bump into me in the street so he could beat me up, another white man said to get behind him in the queue and when I said why am I as female supposed to fear immigrants when you are threatening violence towards me for absolutely no reason at all! I then got told "suck my dick w*e! These white men are the reason I darwnt have a profile pic on my social media or any freely available information about me!

I'm sorry, I hope that this didn't happen right before Christmas. But remember - and this is true - these are the low-lives. There are other men in the world.

I also refrain from uploading any pics of myself, or even my house or sth. identifiable to the internet, as I have done all my life.

David Tennant wished Kemi Badenoch dead because she has a different opinion to him.

I like William Dalrymple's books, never thought I learn from him how much Turkish men apparently loved melons then 🤣

No it was couple of months back when that train stabbing happens but you just think "listen you yourselves! Read what you are typing!"

I also found that as a woman, if you have a profile pic of yourself and you have a difference of opinion with someone online, there are people that suddenly start trying to tear apart the way you look just as a revenge tool! I am so glad the internet wasn't around when I was a kid and teenager! I can't imagine what the online onslaught is like for young people!
