Over inappropriate behaviour towards women. Anyone surprised?

I’d be interested if anyone has links to articles discussing how some men take advantage of the lower behavioural boundaries or expectations that many women automatically extend to men they assume or know to be gay or “queer”. It seems that the basic protective instincts women may maintain for themselves or their children around straight men often disappear in these cases, or that the threshold for what counts as odd behaviour or boundary-pushing becomes much higher.

This came to mind again in the recent thread asking whether posters would accept a male midwife. A couple of posters mentioned that their male midwife was gay. Full stop. As if that fact alone eliminated any possibility of abuse.

Don't have links but several men in showbusiness have been known to do that.
Norm MacDonald (American comedian, SNL) comes to mind, but he did not pretend to be queer. He pretended to be drunk, so he could sidle up to women at the bar or something.

Also Isaac Mizrahi, another witty man whose persona slips in and out of camp, just fully groped Scarlett Johansson's breasts on the red carpet once. On camera, doesn't matter. And Emma Forrest had nothing better to do than hawk up an article in the Guardian in which she points to his "innocence and curiosity" and that his "imagination cannot be contained by the staid red carpet". 🤮

Basically, men are golden retrievers, they don't know what they're doing. 🙈

Wait please dont tell me there are rumours about him 😭

I mean he literally wished a woman dead for having a different opinion to him, no need for rumours, he operates in plain sight.

I think you have this the wrong way round. Men who are accepting a BJ or giving penetrative sex may argue that they are not gay. Remember the charming expression, a hole is a hole. Those who are sucking dick or taking one know that they really are not heterosexual.

A bit like many Ancient Roman men?

To be fair, the young Helen Mirren was both stunningly sexy and mainly known for her willingness to appear stark naked on film on a time when that was very unusual. He career was built on reactions like his.

Edited

Hmm...Mirren did play up her sexual appeal with stuff like Caligula but most of her early films were not like that.

Plus she was primarily acting in RSC at the time which surely wasn't having nude stage productions!

Tbh it makes me wonder if it was actually consensual considering he is such a creep anyway. His poor sister if that is the case.

I really think the default attitude to that kind of incident should be that it's abuse. Most cases seem to involve an age and/or power imbalance.
The SiblingsToo podcast discusses this & has pointed out how media portrayals usually show consensual 'brother/sister affairs' for taboo plot lines, rather than the reality which is normally abuse without meaningful consent

That Times link did not work for me so I looked up some academic research into sibling child sexual abuse.

I have a personal history involving sibling child sexual abuse in my family. It's very hard to read anything detailed regarding the abuse, and in my family it happened many decades ago and I was not directly involved.

Just wanted to say that child sexual abuse can never be consensual. Also the research indicated that the abuse often happened when there was "family stress" but also could occur when there was no family stress - but the papers examined for the study constituted 91 published papers over a period of 40 years, which is hardly anything really. This area is very underresearched.

Do you think it was happening to your brother too? Im so sorry. :(

We have wondered about this, he was badly bullied by our father who also used to hit him (and me once) with a belt. With me and my sister my dad went in for a lot of psychological abuse, he would ignore one of us for ages while "doting"on the other, and forbid the ignored one to speak to the currently favoured one and then swap the roles he had ordained for us It didn't really work because we loved each other and stuck together, We were not close with our brother although neither of us had disclosed anything to the other. It was a bit of a fucked up childhood.

So disturbing. How old was DW sister?

I’m not sure you know. I just remember my (now very senior) friend telling me
when she worked there. Lots of
stories that won’t surprise you - a lot of chat about how awful James Corden was (not abuse, just being a dick) and a naked chef… who had a wandering eye!

I might have a look at it later, when I've stopped putting off all the jobs I'm supposed to be doing and have actually done some of them.

I think the union with him and Lara was a mutually transactional one, more so for him as it helped dispel the rumours about him being gay as well as helping his career, resulting in more money.

It’s amazing he got to marry Lara who is / was beautiful and a top model. I just looked to remind myself who she was and happily she had a very kind looking and successful new husband.

I can’t believe Lara needed to be in any way ‘transactional’ re: DW.

Same she was very successful in her own right. If that’s what you mean.

Exactly. Although she was quite young at time I think.

Tell that to the whole of Reddit! It’s a known secret.

That doesn't make it OK. This whole thread seems to be full of people who want to gossip, people saying 'ooooh give me a clue'.

It's disgusting for women on a parenting website to be gossiping about whether someone abused his sister. She has no way of refuting these claims and it must be extremely upsetting for her. She's not famous and so doesn't deserve this type of speculation about her.

But he wanted to put it in his book! Then the nation would have known.

Sure. A man obsessed with his brand, at the peak of his career (2011, when he and his alleged ghostwriter would be writing the book) would want to end his high flying, luxurious lifestyle over something so depraved? Very unlikely.

Beezz · 21/12/2025 19:19

His sister is older than him. There is a good chance he wanted to reveal it as a cry for help.

There's another one elderly now who will be a shock to many not in the know. He's been knighted is beloved by millions. I don't know if it will even come out when he's dead but friends daughter who once worked for the BBC said much is known inside the industry that is protected. By ITV too.

Is it the one who proclaimed that women cannot enjoy sex? The one who is, quote, a stupid person's idea of a smart person? Whose husband has a thousand yard stare like the survivors of D-Day?

What the actual fuck? So now you are accusing his sister? Absolutely vile.
