I used to work in a Deli and I only recognize 2 of these !

sanityisamyth · 19/12/2025 18:59

I’ve never heard of most of them!

I want some Coverdale now. Never had smoked, which is obviously reprehensible. But Coverdale is the best of cheeses, and I knew you must be in Yorkshire, as I’ve never seen it anywhere else.

I call it David, in my head, but don’t tell anyone.

I’m going to Yorkshire tomorrow and am now Googling cheese shops along my route.

TonTonMacoute · 19/12/2025 19:01

The Montgomery cheddar is excellent.

The maker came to our local cheese shop one time to promote it and we had quite a long chat with him. Nice chap.

BoredZelda · 19/12/2025 19:01

How do you place an order without knowing how much it is going to cost? How much did you think all that posh sounding cheese that probably smells rank was going to cost?

CalzoneOnLegs · 19/12/2025 19:02

@Minjou pretty much all cheese is made using rennet, it’s just some cheese is made using animal (usually calf) rennet, most mass produced UK cheeses are vegetarian suitable as made using non animal rennet. Like a PP said you need to check

CalzoneOnLegs · 19/12/2025 19:03

@BoredZelda the worse it smells the better it tastes is usually a good indicator

If you have to ask, then you can’t afford it.

It's half that and who asked for your opinion on how many people it would feed?

Fair enough. No one asked - but opinions is kind of how forums work 🤷‍♀️

JollyHostess101 · 19/12/2025 19:14

Sounds lovely!

I’ve been gift not 1 but2 cheese hampers so far so I’ve just got to get some Stilton so have saved some pennies this year!!

GKG1 · 19/12/2025 19:19

I feel sad for those of you not from a cheese family! Ours is not as fancy as yours OP (although I fully approve of you spending your money on lovely cheese). I think now and again someone has gotten a couple from a cheesemonger but it’s usually supermarket for us.

But our family seriously bond over cheese! It’s the main focus of many of our get togethers, cheeseboards out, plenty of tea in the pot with a few other salady bits etc on the side. We all love it, we all graze and chat. I’m a bit sad it’s an IL Christmas for me, because while there may be a bit of cheese, it’s not the affectionate cheese fest that characterises my gang. I love them!

That’s my sort of perk! How do I sign up for a job like yours?

Can I sign up aswell?

notionpotion · 19/12/2025 19:25

Oooo, sounds lovely. I’m getting mine from Metz this year and expect it’ll cost similar. Neither of us drink or like sweets/cakes so posh cheese is such a treat!!

Blarn · 19/12/2025 15:27

Did you do that mad grin we all do when paying for something that costs more than expected, trying to hide the fact that what we really want to say is, thats too much, I need to put something back!

Edited

Argh, that sentence hit home.😬
I recall an instance in a hair salon...

I thank you for saving me the job!

I also have a rind washed goats' cheese I got from the farmer's market last week.

So Queen I think we are all just a bit confused why you would buy so much cheese if none of your twenty guests like cheese, you get what we are saying???

Oh I've loved this thread. Although I used to love cheese and worked in Lipton's deli counter as a teen I only eat mild cheese because it is one of my migraine triggers. (Found that out after having a terrible migraine that made me (temporary) lose my vision whilst slicing ham at work).
My DD told me once that I had ruined her life!
Because we only ever had mild cheese in the house she only found out how many delicious other flavours were available when she left home and did her own shopping! She's an absolute cheesy. (Her description)

FletchFan · 19/12/2025 19:34

Wow, then there's me scraping the last bit of Asda's Wensleydale with cranberry off the shelf today.

NotMyKidsThough · 19/12/2025 19:35

BootMaker · 19/12/2025 15:11

For reference I got

A Vacherin
500g of stichelton
500g of Montgomery Cheddar
An Epoisses
A bungay raw butter
500g sparkenhoe
250g of smoked Coverdale
250g Alp blossom

2 x perello olives
1 x fancy hot chocolate

That's a nice selection and the price is right, too. All I could suggest is substitute Westcombe cheddar for Montgomery. It's made near Bruton, £16/kilo in Waitrose and to me, it's a better cheese. Nothing wrong with Montgomery - I remember when he used to get up off a Sandford Orcas party floor at 5am for the milking - just a matter of taste.
I had the first vacherin of Christmas today - you can freeze it if you buy too many!

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 19/12/2025 19:39

I am yet to do The Big Waitrose Cheesecounter Mission (the local cheese shop having sadly closed down a few years ago) but your £121 bill is making me feel better about the fact that Big Spending is coming up despite a stroppy text from Lloyds about my overdraft.

Christmas is all about the cheese in this house, so bring it on. Especially Even Epoisses which makes the fridge smell like a farmyard on a hot day.

I’ve been working my way through the Courtyard Dairy’s advent calendar. Very, very highly recommended for cheese aficionados.

WOAH THERE. A cheese ADVENT CALENDAR?! I mean, obvs I’m too late for this year but where do I get one of these for next Christmas?

There is one in Otley - Yorkshire Pecorino.
