Goodness. I was upset that a big babybel was over£3 in Asda! Are any of those cheeses vegetarian? I’ve never heard of them but they sound interesting.

Your poor arteries...

Presumably Op isn’t eating it all and will have some help!

TheTecknician · 19/12/2025 18:08

Absolutely crackers. (I haven't read the full thread so I apologise if I've repeated the joke).

Aren’t all cheeses vegetarian?

TheMentalMentalLoad · 19/12/2025 18:20

Am I the only one thinking that is bonkers? Aldi sell cheese! Next year just pop there.

SheinIsShite · 19/12/2025 18:21

So glad I don't like cheese.

Which is perfectly fine.

However, it's like saying that Warburton's Toastie bread is the same as a sourdough loaf that I've spend 2 days making and baking. It's technically the same but really is a different thing altogether.

MuyPuy · 19/12/2025 18:23

I’ve chucked £50 at my cheese dealer and will be picking up the stash on Monday. Dealer is going to surprise me with the variety. The only one I’ve asked for specifically is a aged Gouda.

I ask as someone who likes cheese - how on earth can you eat that much?

you don't have to eat it all in 2 days though! Use leftover bits to make a macaroni cheese

You’re clearly not eating the Warburtons stuff properly then 😂

In all seriousness, maybe I just didn’t have the sort of upbringing where this sort of thing was the norm.

Next year can I be invited too?

GreyBeeplus3 · 19/12/2025 18:29

Okay then, hope you got a mountain of QUALITY cheese for your endeavours!

Not a cheese lover and I can think of loads of things I'd rather spend the money on.

But OP is clearly someone who loves her cheese and wants the good stuff. If it isn't used up, isn't it a total waste to make a cheese sauce with it?

But some of us appreciate local independent delis and cheesemongers and want to support those businesses. There are lots of wonderful artisan cheese producers and I'm happy to spend more for a quality handmade product rather than something mass produced for Aldi.

The UK has some absolute amazing cheese producers doing a great job in these difficult times with rising costs. I for one am happy to support them!

ProfDrILikeDungs · 19/12/2025 18:41

OP you will need some apple chilli jam to go with that cheese

Noooo, the good stuff will be amazing used up
something like a cheese sauce needs decent cheese as well, the main bit of it is cheese

Yes agree. I don’t want only supermarkets with mass stuff so delis need people buying from them.

That’s like 5kg of cheese (maybe more). Who truly needs or wants to eat that much cheese over a 2-10 day period 😳 Please say you’re feeding 20! That aside, small batch food is expensive and hopefully the farmers and makers got a fair share.

It's half that and who asked for your opinion on how many people it would feed?

No. Animal rennet used to make the curds, non animal rennet is available though

No. Most cheese is made with rennet.

TimeForATerf · 19/12/2025 18:53

I think the price is right,I’m not sure about half a kilo of each though, that’s a fuck load of cheese. I would probably get a few more varieties and smaller weights but then I don’t know who you have for Christmas.

I got one of the French cheese selections from Sainsbury’s for DH for an tenner, small portions five select cheese plus a Brie, a Yorkshire blue and a creamy Lancashire. Total cost less than £20 but for two of us.

I bloody love cheese so no judgement here. Enjoy.

EarthAndInstinct · 19/12/2025 18:53

We’re collecting our cheese order tomorrow. I’m expecting around £130 and it’s only for 4 of us. 😂

But, they’re all good ones. We don’t do chocolates or puddings over Christmas as no-one like them. It’s all about the cheese.

Strangequinoaconcoction · 19/12/2025 18:54

Minjou · 19/12/2025 18:52

No. Most cheese is made with rennet.

I stand corrected. I thought most vegetarians ate normal cheese.

TonTonMacoute · 19/12/2025 18:55

Our Christmas cheese order is easy, we just buy a half Stilton. This year it cost £85.

And all this talk of cheese means I'm going to g9 and have a little taste. Yum.

Lots of cheese is suitable for vegetarians these days but you do have to check.
