@BootMakerWhy only two olives? Are they super sized?

Love me a cheeseboard. Our deli has a queue around the block at this time of year.

Jessbow · 19/12/2025 17:25

Could have got it all in Waitrose or M&S !
Prob half the cost

But not the same specific cheeses. Proper, artisan cheese is a marvellous thing. I've had a good number of the cheese the OP has chosen (but not the smoked, I don't like that) and they are worth the indulgence at Christmas.

The joy of cheese is that, like smoked and cured meats and pickled/fermented/brined/oil marinated olives, garlic, capers, caperberries, artichokes, more olives, peppers, peppers with goats cheese in them, gherkins, etc, etc, it's a means of preservation - apart from the very newest ones that are more coagulated and possibly lightly fermented curd than cheese, they've already been sitting in a cool, dark place for a good couple of years already without the slightest trace of spoilage. As a result, they are absolutely fine for far more than 2-10 days as long as they are stored correctly and not contaminated by twats with butterknives.

Having said that, as long as I've got the melon, grapes, apples, pears, walnuts, pistachios, five different kinds of citrus, dragonfruit, figs, quince, cranberries, passionfruit, cherries and the standard salad veg and potted herbage I've already banged out sixty quid on for Christmas, I'll take one for the team and give a 2 day cheese clearance fest a crack.

Quoting myself to say and ALL OF THE OLIVES.

How could I forget them? Probably because we get buckets of the things from the Turkish and Italian delis round the corner, so they don't require a special season in which to plan purchases.

People shocked at the cheese budget would have utter conniptions at the amount we spend on olives per year. I'd get a full size bucket, but the trouble is that I want all of the varieties rather than just one and DP gets a little twitchy once I've stacked the basket with £45 of them and say 'back in a minute' and head towards the pickled chilli garlic corner.

Namechange234567 · 19/12/2025 17:35

Off topic... Where are you getting alp blossom in Yorkshire? I have not managed to achieve half the things on my list this Christmas so haven't done an online cheese order and our local doesn't have it!

Evenstar · 19/12/2025 17:36

The cost of everything seems so much higher this year, I have spent nearly £300 across two supermarkets this week including tomorrow’s Tesco delivery and not top of the range stuff. The only real luxury a turkey crown from Booths is at least £20 more than last year for the same size. I know where you are coming from OP, even if you can afford it it’s a shock how much it is.

Maybe but it’s nice to have delis and people buying from there keep them going.

That’s like 5kg of cheese (maybe more). Who truly needs or wants to eat that much cheese over a 2-10 day period 😳 Please say you’re feeding 20! That aside, small batch food is expensive and hopefully the farmers and makers got a fair share.

🙋‍♀️

Inextremis · 19/12/2025 17:37

You've done well, OP - I've spent €45 on ONE cheese (including delivery) - but it's 1kg of it, and I've been searching for it for years. It's a Spanish Tetillia - much missed by a friend who used to live in Spain, so I'm looking forward to surprising him with it. It's in the shape of a tit, so that's a bonus :D

I thought I had all the Christmas cheese organised - 3 from the Great British Cheese co. and some Wensleydale (no cranberries!) for DH, a truffle Gouda and good Stilton for me - and tonight he came home with a gift from work - an entire bloody cheeseboard! I guess you can never have too much cheese?

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 19/12/2025 15:39

This is why the period in between Christmas and new years is called ‘cheese week’. I approve of your cheese buying OP

We also now call it cheese week in our house.

FcukBreastCancer · 19/12/2025 17:39

Blimey. I just get an m&s platter thing, about £11. Excellent cheese (small quantities)

ChristmasStressy · 19/12/2025 17:39

I feel fancy when I get Catherdral City instead of Aldis own 🤣🤣

Trethew · 19/12/2025 17:40

Happy Christmas again

I just went to the deli to pick up my Christmas cheese order.

I’m surprised the OP hasn’t been told yet to read the room because of the COL crisis.
Disclaimer - I’m not saying that

AgnesMcDoo · 19/12/2025 17:43

BootMaker · 19/12/2025 15:11

For reference I got

A Vacherin
500g of stichelton
500g of Montgomery Cheddar
An Epoisses
A bungay raw butter
500g sparkenhoe
250g of smoked Coverdale
250g Alp blossom

2 x perello olives
1 x fancy hot chocolate

I ask as someone who likes cheese - how on earth can you eat that much?

Holluschickie · 19/12/2025 17:44

Gosh. I am so cheese illiterate.
Off to Google Bungay Whatsis.

Boiledeggandtoast · 19/12/2025 17:46

Bungay butter is fabulous. We have friends who bring it when they come to stay, they're always very welcome.

JoshLymanSwagger · 19/12/2025 17:47

Your poor arteries...

Holluschickie · 19/12/2025 17:52

The Epoisses sounds fab. Must try it.

Howmanycatsistoomany · 19/12/2025 17:52

Wish I hadn't opened this thread - I'm in Normandy, the land of cheese, and all I want for Christmas is some Wensleydale (all the flavours but especially with cranberries).
Money well spent OP!

GoingForAGallop · 19/12/2025 17:55

Enjoy! It sounds absolutely delicious.

I think you got a really good deal. I’ve just spent £80+ on four smallish cheeses, so nowhere near as good an order as yours, but I’m in London.

pouletvous · 19/12/2025 17:55

This is the most mumsnetty of mumsnet Christmas posts so far this year

Chasbots · 19/12/2025 17:57

That sounds lovely. I'm out in the sticks and we had an amazing cheesemonger in a local village until recently and her favourite cheese was Vacharin. I should have gone there more often and she might not have closed. It's a labour of love being a cheesemonger with good selections of cheeses most people haven't heard of and won't buy due to cost, regardless of how much they cost to produce. Enjoy!

SoLongLuminosity · 19/12/2025 17:59

I'm learning/living through you so much from you, OP. Whiskey with and e being Irish, new cheese names, aparativo, perello....

A sprinkling of fun Cheesus jokes.

Keep it coming!

Mumdiva99 · 19/12/2025 17:59

My favourite thread of the year.
I want to come to yours for cheesmas.
I have all the chutneys, about 6 types, the quince Jam, the dried date ball or is it figs? The crackers. But I couldn't get a good selection of cheese. I have soothed myself with the rationalisation it is just me eating them. My arteries will thank me for the scarse selection. I can make it up in Jan when the first cheese subscription arrives at my parents and I am invited to partake. (A great xmas gift for cheese lovers).

We have 2 fridge drawers full of assorted cheese plus half a wheel of Jarlsberg in for Christmas, so I applaud your dedication to cheese OP. Though we only have so much as I am lucky enough to work for a cheese maker so there are freebies

That’s my sort of perk! How do I sign up for a job like yours?
