I thank you for saving me the job!

I also have a rind washed goats' cheese I got from the farmer's market last week.

… what’s your total spend for all food and drinks for Christmas period?

Fibrous · 20/12/2025 21:38

This thread just inspired me to eat my way through a whole Chaource. Salty yum.

121 quid on cheese 😲😲 Jesus my turkey and ham and lots of sides don't even cost that, my blood pressure is rising reading that list, would keel over with a heart attack.

We brought £4 pilgrims choice and I thought that was alot!

GellerYeller · 20/12/2025 22:10

Several people here have mentioned Cheshire- I’m finding it scarce round here. Sainsburys never stock it but always have Wensleydale. M and S were out of stock and Lancashire doesn’t feel the same!

I'm amazed at how much people spend on Christmas food on here. I was puzzled about all these expensive turkeys, so I went onto the Sainsbury's website and found you can get one for 15-20 pounds. And veg is cheap. Christmas food only costs a fortune if you want it to.

How big is a £15 turkey tho? My free range chickens (two, weighing about 2kg each) cost that each.

I get two chickens to feed five of us. Most people will want more than a 2kg bird. Tho I guess if it’s not free range it will be bigger for £15.

No you didn't think that was a lot of money!

Fauchon · 20/12/2025 22:34

Where I live in London, that would easily cost double that. Bargain!

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 20/12/2025 22:34

I have my order in to collect on Tuesday. £63.77 for roughly 1.2kg of cheese and a bit of quince paste. Hope the queue to collect is shorter than last year by going on the 23rd instead of Christmas Eve and the Glasgow rain stays away!

Missingpop · 20/12/2025 23:02

Try Aldi miles cheaper & once it’s out of the wrappers no one’s going to know where you got it from are they 😂😂 they’ll still eating if your taking it somewhere but some fancy wax paper & rewrap it

mondaytosunday · 20/12/2025 23:05

I’m not surprised at all. But why didn’t you price it out when you ordered?

Oldwmn · 20/12/2025 23:08

BootMaker · 19/12/2025 15:20

Incorrect!

Seems like I got a bargain at £121.

It's my standard Christmas cheese order, usually about £80-90.

Just felt a bit toppy!

Jesus! MN never ceases to amaze me. I'm not allowed to eat Stilton at the moment so I'm allowed some envy. I've spent about £8/9 on cheese this xmas but even on a good day, how many people are you catering for?

cornflakecrunchie · 21/12/2025 00:21

I order my cheese from an online cheese shop. I get so excited when it's delivery day! The kids don't.. luckily we have two fridge freezers, so it's kept well away from them, but they can smell it upstairs when I open the fridge door.. ;-)

They just like cheddar & red leicester.. the truffle cheese I ordered nearly pushed them over the edge!

@notionpotion it would be awful to lose the proper cheesemakers of the UK so all we are left with is factory Conglomerates. Enjoy your lovingly produced with TLC for months cheese ❤️

Well said.

Traditional and hand made by a family that has made cheese throughout its generations, using raw milk. I'm happy to keep that alive by spending my £90 (15 of us) at Christmas.

Hoteletiquette · 21/12/2025 07:36

No godminster? It is in my opinion the BEST cheese

I have a Godminster vintage cheddar in my collection.

I've ordered loads of cheese, it has to be said! I like a good selection. 🧀 🧀

BootMaker · 19/12/2025 15:11

For reference I got

A Vacherin
500g of stichelton
500g of Montgomery Cheddar
An Epoisses
A bungay raw butter
500g sparkenhoe
250g of smoked Coverdale
250g Alp blossom

2 x perello olives
1 x fancy hot chocolate

Did you need a second mortgage?

FlyingCatGirl · 21/12/2025 09:16

I was in Morrisons supermarket yesterday and I was speechless, a Morrisons own brand trifle was £15!

Edited

exactly. On Mumsnet it is often expressed that people are worried about the death of the high street and local businesses closing. When someone posts a thread saying how they support these same businesses generously loads of posters pile on to mock her or chide her 🤷🏻‍♀️

CalzoneOnLegs · 21/12/2025 15:11

@notionpotion absolutely, it is part of our food heritage, we have wonderful pasture therefore wonderful milk, the perfect starting point, cheese making already almost died off at one point when the government wanted to ban raw milk production, I believe KC rescued it by direct intervention and it’s gone from strength to strength since, and I’m so glad, we should be so proud that proper varied UK cheeses are so sought after and respected. We should be more like the French in that regard.

24kPalamino · 21/12/2025 18:35

£120 on cheese!!

I’ll stick with my Dairy Lee triangles and Cheesits I think.

Why would you ask me that??

I buggered off for real life socials.

And you ask me that?

I came back for calm cheese.

Look, I'm the tosser that went into the booze shop had a quaff of Margot Robbie's gin and said;

'Ohh that would go beautifully with a native oyster and a spritz of citrus oil'.

I am that wanker.

But I also agree with Albert Roux and fucking love a Big Mac.

I'm not food snob. Like all the food.
