In tears with disappointment

My daughter had her baby two days ago

We planned to drive up to see her tomorrow. A 4-5 hour journey so I'd booked a B&B.

The car needed its MOT today, so we boked at the usual garage, emphasising that it must be finished tonight. At 4:30 he phoned to say he'd been delayed but would be finished by 5:30. At 6:30 DH went to find out what was going on, and the place was locked up.

DH phoned ,and the owner said he'd popped home and would be back and finished by 8pm. Now, at 9:50 DH is back there.

We aren't going, are we? We have other commitments on Thursday Friday and Saturday, so it had to be tomorrow and the next day.

I want to meet my grandchild, and hear how the delivery went.

Its not over until its over girl

Fingers crossed the mechanic gets it done tonight and dh returns home triumphant xx

Iloveacurry · 15/12/2025 22:01

Can you hire a car?

EchoedSilence · 15/12/2025 22:02

Can you get out of your other commitments? I'd prioritise seeing my DD and grand child over anything else.

Quitelikeit · 15/12/2025 22:03

U can surely collect first thing tomorrow

Scared0112 · 15/12/2025 22:03

Train up? Hire car?

BrendaSmall · 15/12/2025 22:04

You’re planning on leaving tomorrow, it may possibly be ready for then, failing that hire one!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 15/12/2025 22:05

You can book a MOT up to a month before it expires. You should have done it sooner. Hopefully you can go early tomorrow and rearrange your other plans

Shadesofscarlett · 15/12/2025 22:05

last minute car hire is deffo an option. small vans are often cheap to rent this time of year btw

GreyCloudsLooming · 15/12/2025 22:06

Go on the train.

PullTheBricksDown · 15/12/2025 22:07

Train, coach, hire car? Do some googling. It's still possible. Don't let the MOT guy stop you.

jollyoldsanta · 15/12/2025 22:09

Train, coach, hire car, taxi. Some people don’t have a car. I get it’s disappointing but I’d have seen it as too risky to put it in for mot the day before.

forgotaboutmyteeth · 15/12/2025 22:11

I've looked at train, but as we live in the middle of nowhere it would be a £50 taxi each way to the station, plus £170 train. And couldn't take all the gifts, though that is less important.

Car hire hadn't occurred to me, but it would have to be delivered. I will look

The MOT was a formality, and is 3 weeks early. It was booked for a service too, and needed a fuel pump which was the initial delay. Garage is usually reliable and helpful.
Baby came two weeks late, so we considered moving the MOT , but assumed it would all go well, as it always has.

Surely you cancel the other commitments on Thursday Friday and Saturday?

forgotaboutmyteeth · 15/12/2025 22:21

The nearest car hire I can find would be feasible. It would come to the same price as the train plus taxi, if they have a car equivalent ours.

I can understand that this is very frustrating and disappointing. Your garage have not handled this well.
But, unless the other commitments are work related or some kind of health appointment you’ve waited years for, surely you move or cancel the other things and go tomorrow anyway.
I can’t imagine my mum thinking that anything else was more important.

Shadesofscarlett · 15/12/2025 22:24

can't the garage give a courtesy car?

Overthebow · 15/12/2025 22:25

Thanks for the cliffhanger

And what's the news?

forgotaboutmyteeth · 15/12/2025 22:29

The other things are related to DH family and were the whole of their family Christmas, as on parent from each family has to work on Christmas Day. They are all Emergency Services.

Dh finally got hold of the garage owner, who has loaned us his own car. So it looks OK.

Now I'm crying with relief. This baby has been a long time coming, and the pregnancy has been very rocky.

Sorry for the cliffhanger, I was listening to DHs analysis of the problem

Glad it’s worked out OP. Although I think I would have cancelled the other commitments! Or at least cut them short.
