I think I’m with the rudest family in the world

Not only have they made a family meal and all sat down round the table to eat it whilst ignoring me completely, they are all farting and burping away.

I’ve done the only thing I can and retreated to the sofa that is farthest away from the table. I have not been invited to sit down anywhere or offered a drink.

How do I fucking leave politely???

You overstayed. They're burping and farting to hasten your departure.

murasaki · 13/12/2025 23:08

It does sound like they've tried hints to get you to go, and dinner is the penultimate one before they all put their pj's on. Go home.

P0loGirl · 13/12/2025 23:08

Maybe I should have left hours ago. But I kept being told it was fine

Practically yelling it over her shoulder as she sat down at the dinner table

How long have you been there? Sounds very odd unless it is the scenario of you missing the cue to leave and they have thought sod it, let's eat anyway. Not sure about the burping and farting as that is vile at any dinner table.

I think you missed the cue that they were being polite and it really wasn't. If you kept asking, you knew, deep down.

I can imagine the friend’s post “help! I invited a mate around for a cuppa earlier and she just wouldn’t take the hint it was time to go! DH had made his fab shepherd’s pie not expecting her to still be here and we were all starving but she kept hanging around and then when we couldn’t wait any longer and it was about to be ruined, she sat and eyeballed us all from the sofa while we ate. Awks.”

Are you still there and if so, why?

Unless you're staying the night I would go now - it's past 11pm!

murasaki · 13/12/2025 23:11

For Christ's sake woman, go, and leave them alone. They'll be laughing about you for days.

MoveOnTheCards · 13/12/2025 23:12

Please say you’re back home now @P0loGirl and not still loitering?

Fends · 13/12/2025 23:12

Sounds like she invited you for a coffee hours ago thinking you’d do the normal thing and chat for an hour and leave.

Instead you have been hanging around all night until her DH thought, fuck this, the kids are starving, and served up dinner. Then you still didn’t take the hint and went and parked your arse on their sofa looking at your phone 😅.

murasaki · 13/12/2025 23:12

I can't decide if this is a Fast Show sketch or a League of Gentlemen one

SpaceRaccoon · 13/12/2025 23:13

Tbf it's graceless of them not to feed you even if you've overstayed.
I remember my parents always stretching things for unexpected guests.

P0loGirl · 13/12/2025 23:06

Really not the case. I’ve been here ages. I my house it would have been an automatic invitation to stay but clearly not here

That’s the point other people are making — that no one had expected you to stay this long!

Frannieisnthappy · 13/12/2025 23:14

How long have you known your friend and how do you know her? What was the invite over for - catch up and cuppa, wine and nibbles, or dinner?

P0loGirl · 13/12/2025 23:14

Also, the house is disgusting. Stinks of cat wee.

Well go then. You don't want to be there and they don't want you there.

Sorry OP, but it sounds like they invited you to pop by and weren't expecting you to stay for long or for dinner. They waited as long as they could and then gave up and dished up their dinner. They didn't make enough for you or they know you have dietary requirements that the meal they prepared don't meet.
I think you may have been the rude one in overstaying. Saying "it's fine" when you ask if you should leave is not the same as saying "oh no of course not it's lovely to have you here. We're just about to dish up Dave's cottage pie, you will join us won't you".

Tigerbalmshark · 13/12/2025 23:15

You’ve been sitting on the sofa watching them eat for 90 minutes, and posting on here that you’ll be getting up and leaving soon but not actually showing any sign of moving.

You must have been there hours! Have they gone up to bed yet? Are you planning to sleep on their sofa and watch them eat breakfast in the morning too?

Frannieisnthappy · 13/12/2025 23:16

What time were you asked to arrive?
