I think I’m with the rudest family in the world

Not only have they made a family meal and all sat down round the table to eat it whilst ignoring me completely, they are all farting and burping away.

I’ve done the only thing I can and retreated to the sofa that is farthest away from the table. I have not been invited to sit down anywhere or offered a drink.

How do I fucking leave politely???

Why didn’t you grab a plate and sit down with them? With your friend?

they probably think you are weird and don’t want to disturb your zen….

Grab a plate?! It’s really not that kind of house.

Who has a family dinner at almost 10pm?

People who gave up on waiting for the visitor to leave?

P0loGirl · 13/12/2025 22:50

It’s actually disgusting. It stinks of cat wee.

We don’t. Just trying to navigate reality

Navigate what?

And as others have asked, why are you still there?

Do you think them waiting until 10 o'clock at night to eat a family dinner, is your cue to leave?

They're very rude, so I'd just go.

Tooobvious · 13/12/2025 22:50

Why didn't you just say "Oh, I didn’t realise you were going to be eating, I’ll be off then" and leave?

P0loGirl · 13/12/2025 22:51

UxmalFan · 13/12/2025 21:52

Why are you there OP?

I was invited to the home

A bunch of posters will come on soon and claim they NEVER have their evening meal/family dinner til waaaay after 9pm most nights, and it's usually only the working classes who have it 'early' at 6.00pm to 6.30pm. 😆

They will regale us with tales of how they don't get in from their big important job til between 7.15pm and 7.45pm, after their late finish and long commute.

@P0loGirl Just leave......

Are you sure you're not in a zoo?

SleepingStandingUp · 13/12/2025 22:53

what happened since you arrived?

P0loGirl · 13/12/2025 22:53

Would anyone actually do that on a visit - unless it was family or very close friend? Just look through the cupboards to find a plate and serve themselves? Or grab someone else's plated dinner and eat it? I would have thought serving up dinner to everyone apart from the guest would be an universally accepted sign that the guest had overstayed their welcome- cracking up af the thought of the guest then serving themselves and hanging around longer.

My friend invited me. I had no idea her husband was making a massive shepherds pie for all the family.

What time did she invite you over? Because if they sat down to eat at 10pm my guess is that they’ve been wanting you to leave for bloody hours so they could have their dinner, and eventually just served it up hoping you’d get the hint and go home.

Seriously, why would you not say “Oh, sorry, I’ve been keeping you from your dinner! I’ll get going now and leave you to eat - lovely to see you” and go home? Really odd to just sit there.

This is like pulling teeth

Loobyloolovesandypandy · 13/12/2025 22:59

Have you overstayed your welcome? Maybe you should have left way before dinner time.

I just live down the road. No bags needed. Was invited, it’s descended, I shall be leaving. Delicately.

Disconcerting for you!
Another time you'll know to say 'Oh, are you eating, I'll be off then.'
Some families would have invited you to eat with them, but not all. My nephew had friends who would expect to sit and wait while he ate with his parents, and took no offence. Perhaps this is one of those families. Hope it is possible to stay friendly with your friend.

There were five people all having their dinner. All very normal as they moved around me sorting dinner, condiments, etc.

And then just me on my own. Starving. 😂

Did they invite you for dinner or was it just for you to pop in and see them? Also what time did you arrive? Why didn't you leave when they were cooking or heating up food.

Really not the case. I’ve been here ages. I my house it would have been an automatic invitation to stay but clearly not here

Wonder if you might have missed some cues to leave if you've been there ages.
