A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

We are bracing for the budget 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

So, you can now earn just shy of 26k, stacking shelves at the supermarket full time. You could aim for a supervisor position for not much more but all that hassle. Or you could go to uni, get in about 80k of debt (PGCE) qualify as a teacher and start on a whopping 6k more. Just to leave within 5 years if the odds are followed through. It is baffling no-one sees the issue with this. Other professional careers and middle management are available.

The wages for people who have done the right thing and got an education are not increasing. Young and people without education are too expensive to hire in comparison to those with an education and experience.

People literally do quit teaching to go and stack shelves. Less stress, much less unpaid over time. The running joke between my colleagues is that Tesco is advertising.

I submitted a flexing working request Monday to ask to reduce my contract to 0.6 after Christmas. I’m really tired of the stress of teaching. We’re better off financially with DS at high school but I’m having to sit with his at least 90 minutes each evening to help him with his homework - it isn’t sustainable with us teaching all day and then going back to planning/marking after helping him. A job at Tescos working around DS sounds heavenly!

Was just on another thread where a poster was saying how hard it is with one earner on 100k and another on 25k with no help with childcare and the tax disincentives that go with it. The usual pile on of "suck it up", "you must be really bad at managing your money". I despair I really do. Then people saying that UC claimants being forced to work 16 hours is seen as fine but people on 100k dropping hours isn't. Can people not see that the 100k earner is self financing? This country is fucked. If they remove salary sacrifice today it will be the last straw for many.

Or my personal favourite, people telling op she could stay at home. How very progressive. I think we have reached a tipping point today.

A friend had their hours cut last time there was a NMW increase, and had already been told they will again….

That happened with the staff of our [insert national supermarket chain] . One of the full-timers I am quite chatty with said her hours had dropped to the tune of around £300 a month. They are worried too.

This is why, teaching a female dominated profession, is in the crisis it is. You can’t be a good teacher and parent. You have to choose. They are incompatible. It has not been addressed because it is a female dominated workforce which has an extraordinarily high male leadership ratio in comparison.

Teaching (in England) will continue to have the worst attrition in the western world because of all the reasons we know of.

How on earth will this government recruit the promised 6.5k new state school teachers?

Yes I think today is going to tip a lot of people over the edge. It really is worrying. Why do they keep banging on about helping working people when they are doing the exact opposite?

MantleStatue · 26/11/2025 07:17

Oh and on the subject of stacking shelves and going to uni- on Radio 4 several weeks ago (and I simply cannot recall the name of the programme... it may have been More or Less, but not sure if it was that or money box ?) they talked about if going to university was 'worth it' ultimately. Apparently the rough numbers are that for a woman, going to university as opposed to starting work upon leaving school the uplift in earnings over the course of a working life was circa £100k. For men (who obviously are not usually as affected by career breaks for maternity leave etc) the uplift was not significantly higher.

They won’t. It was a lie.

Feature, not a bug.

Rivalled · 26/11/2025 07:26

I heard that @MantleStatue and the business case for university has worsened for many people - given that many RG graduates cannot even get shelf stacking jobs at the moment (massive you grad unemployment rise), there must be a lot of young people in despair this Christmas.

I'm working away today with limited access to anything so wont have much access today. Will only be reading this thread though to keep me sane

Darren Jones chief secretary to the PM is getting roasted on good morning itv.
Getting quotes from Rachel last year that freezing thresholds will hurt working people . Quotes from business leaders that the nmw wage rise will cause jobless issues for young people. ..stumbling fumbling .

I guess you can't defend the indefensible !!
What a pack of weasels.

ReevesRuinedChristmas · 26/11/2025 07:34

@Klipspringer they will hold a party for teachers in downing Street and say that's investing in teachers.

Because in reality they mean "not working" people, they just can't say it

If I’m still anything like our end of term Xmas and summer celebration, it’ll be bring a dish to eat in the school hall and no alcohol (as that’s banned in school premises)! Fun times!

ReevesRuinedChristmas · 26/11/2025 07:43

Yes plonker weasel. They must all feel terribly embarrassed. We need a led by donkeys parading the weasel words everywhere and getting them out on a loud speaker outside Westminster today.

Ed balls really went for him !!

The Guardian have done a job on Reeves.

EasternStandard · 26/11/2025 08:01

And to top it all off an ex general talked about the peacekeeping CoW nonsense saying you can’t send a few flag wavers over you have to be able to go to war with Russia should they strike at those troops.

Fucking Starmer and his craven posturing. Absolute danger and clown.

The Conservatives did a LbD-style projection onto the Houses of Parliament (I think) the other night calling out the lies.

EasternStandard · 26/11/2025 08:29

The middle earners thread is interesting. Finally mn swinging away from pro Labour / Starmer. That’s the good news.

The bad is I’m worried Starmer will use the Ukraine / Russia situation. He’s that craven. The stress levels will go up. Am I mistaken?
