A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

We are bracing for the budget 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

So many have come out against that rise, it will cause more unemployment for under 25s

redange · 25/11/2025 19:44

We as in my DH's generational family business, .(Northern and Southern) Divisions regularly employed around 20 under 18 year old's some as apprentices each year. Ever since the Labour Party came, July 2024 we have not taken on neither an apprentice or employed any one under 20. This in part due to wages, the increased demands regarding employment restrictions, rights of employees and 'worse' a lack of interest from under 20 year old's.

The Government say they want young people in employment, or given a chance but it is extremely difficult for SME to take on young people for the reasons outlined.

Yep. Same.
Dh couldn't take on an apprentice as planned earlier in the year.
18 year olds NMW is going up by 8.5%.

The issue is, salaries have not kept pace with NMW. So all the broadest shoulders are now just people in bog standard professional roles. Why bother?

And then of course, they all become unemployed, lose their sense of worth, get depressed and claim benefits. The cycle continues. It is sheer madness. A land of zombies.

Yep, spot on.
Yet the left will clap like performing sealions because they have no fucking idea of the impact.

Words are cheap.

Raising NMW sounds good on paper until you realise it makes employment prohibitive combined with the rising NI.

How is this going to help employment?

EasternStandard · 25/11/2025 19:54

The thought of young people out of work is really concerning. It’s already high. Not sure what’s happening with the day 1 rights.

Ik the two child benefit will likely change tomorrow. This is a big deal for many people, as a negative.

ReevesRuinedChristmas · 25/11/2025 19:56

Loads of business leaders are saying it's madness and it's not the gov actually giving this rise it's stressed business and will unleash the law of unintended consequences

The employment rights bill is currently in ping pong with the lords.

I'm hitting the bottle of brandy tonight that I bought to feed the xmas cake. I haven't had any alcohol since March. God I despise them!

I notice that Peter Kyle didn't mention it when he addressed the CBI. He wouldn't have made it out alive.

I feel like it’s getting towards crappy Covid times. Why can’t the state ie Labour give us a break from their shite. It’s relentless.

My employer used the rise in NMW, together with the NI rises, as a reason the rest of us couldn't have reasonable pay rises. The gap between the lowest paid and others just keeps on shrinking!

I'm not saying they shouldn't have rises, but it would be nice to have a similar % rise!

Re
The reduction in the pay gap

There was a report in the papers recently that graduates in some industries are getting paid min wage and it’s not worth doing a degree
As min wage closes the gap on graduate salaries it could easily affect industries and expertise.

Rivalled · 25/11/2025 20:18

I saw an article on graduate jobs worsening and wondered when it’ll translate into falling degree numbers - as a country we’ve lost all of our confidence in so many areas. It does feel as gloomy as the pandemic.

DH and I are both hoping that our kids want to do (and get) apprenticeships after school, instead of going to uni. No doubt that hope will be scuppered by Labour's NMW rise now though. 🙄

I think it's worse than the pandemic. You expect a pandemic to be shit. This is just self-created shit from incompetent government, not as a result of an outside influence.

I know this is Labour isn't working, but honourable mention to Jonathan Hinder tonight, whose outrage at the puberty blocker trial is palpable.
Streeting, on the other hand, is a fucking weasel.

Goalpace · 25/11/2025 20:24

A friend had their hours cut last time there was a NMW increase, and had already been told they will again….
