Labour isn't working - Thread 21

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

We are bracing for the budget 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Nope, I'm dead against, as is the Law Society. This is not what Leveson recommended, and as far as I can see, there is no evidence to suggest that this would even reduce the backlog. Thats before you even get into the right to a fair trial. I don't think this is right or fair. Starmer is supposed to be a human rights lawyer fgs.

Judges can also be biased. I think this will also lead to an increase in the conviction rate, and the constant examination of the previous political affiliation of judges. Jury trials aren't perfect and can also be affected by bias, but these proposals would not be an improvement on what we have now imo.

Ddad and I have got into reading books by eminent HC judges and Supreme Court in US. He sends me some which I love. Anyway I feel some sadness that we can’t fund jury trials.

My employer used the rise in NMW, together with the NI rises, as a reason the rest of us couldn't have reasonable pay rises. The gap between the lowest paid and others just keeps on shrinking!

I'm not saying they shouldn't have rises, but it would be nice to have a similar % rise!

Exactly, and the industries that are already hardest hit under the current uncertainty - hospitality and retail - will only come under more pressure. Even more so if the suggested business rate changes come in.

Ooh Piggy - that post with me being rude about Dubai - I’ve just read your thing and forgot you live there - I will add I do have friends who do love it and it suits them!

Don’t worry at all! I agree with lots of the things you mentioned! 🤣

At the rate they’re announcing things today there will be nothing left to announce tomorrow!

Whilst not a bad thing per se, the new rise in Minimum and Living Wage will put a lot of extra pressure on businesses - not exactly conducive to encouraging additional jobs.

More businesses going bust. But its ok because the Labour backbenchers will be happy. Where do they think the money comes from? 🤬

Are the meltdowns starting? To really annoy the lurkers today. After serving soggy toast of course, I bought a new advent calendar. The Vogue one had a whopping £35 off - got to get those savings in. I am a bit of a BAC addict.

A bit of budget therapy. 🫣

Maybe those businesses will see a boom when the feckless have the benefit cap lifted? 🤔

I'm sure all the takers will be excited tonight, as opposed to some on this thread who are losing sleep from worrying.

Good for you. What goodies do you get in the calendar?
I hope you had a better day today ❤️

Agree. That’s squarely on Labour. Whatever they say tomorrow they created this shitty toxic environment.

I think VAT on private healthcare is dead in the water. Spire have signed a contract to provide treatment for 30% of NHS patients. My neighbour is off to England to a private clinic to have her cataracts done next month.

So education is fine to tax, but healthcare isn't. Nothing to do with the £££ bunged to Streeting etc?

Lots of stuff. Full size mainly. Vogue has a bit of everything. Makeup, skincare, accessories, jewellery etc.

Today was worse than yesterday. I can feel better about the fact that soggy toast is not helping, like lifting to 2 child cap won’t. Unfortunately, there are no winners with these misguided policies. No-one likes a told you so but…

TheNuthatch · 25/11/2025 18:45

It will probably be on next year's smorgasbord when Reeves runs out of other people's money again.

Spire have been providing NHS services 'in bulk' (i.e. not the occasional
patient via Choose and Book) since Covid. My surgeon was telling me about it when we were discussing the NHS woes at the start of the year.

That sounds lovely. I'd love a BAC but honestly can't justify it right now. I'll see if there's still any about mid December.
Will this thread last to tomorrow's budget? We may need a new one!
Anyway, I've been naughty. Feeling so tired and fed up, I bought wine tonight. Only going to have a couple of glasses but I thought it might help me to relax.

MantleStatue · 25/11/2025 19:09

Ive been to the Spire 3 times in the past 2 years and DH twice.

The first 2 times was because I had been misdiagnosed by an harrassed and overworked ANP at my GP practice. Something that was diagnosed as cosmetic turned out to be a small tumour. Then removed and all fine. Total cost- £2 k about.

DH had haemorrhoids that were deemed to not be of interest and he was told it was just one of those things- but he was unable to walk or sit reliably for some years without pain and blood staining his trousers. GP appointment at Spire- £250. Operation to remove - can't recall- under £1500. Up and about the next day. No issues since and he has been able to return to normal activity including resuming running and competitive sports.

I just went for it 🫣

I think in between the meltdowns, the gate crashing, the gaslighting and the absolute carnage. It will be a new thread tomorrow.

I reckon HNs will be. They seem to have loads.

Poor DH, glad he's been seen now. Friend had awful varicose veins very painful and unsightly. NHS said nah cosmetic. She went private for treatment.

I have avoided the news all day in a bid to stay calm. Ten minutes reading the headlines and I'm fucking furious with Labour.
This shit about ending jury trials is right up there with digital ID for me. Its appalling.
And then I get to the announcement about another rise in NMW, announced the night before a budget and after the markets close. That will be like a hot knife to struggling SMEs.

They couldn't run a feckin bath 😡😡😡

Again I'm a stuck record but why force struggling business who have been hit with so so much recently and aside from crippling energy costs can I remind everyone that water is astronomical for business rates as well and now they' add that nmw hike ?

Why not just raise the bloody tax threshold you bastards !! That will help actual working families and those on the bread line !!

I empathise…I have to periodically step away from it, too - I just feel so fucking angry all the time.

I cannot bear to look at or hear from Starmer and Reeves.

I’m the same I’m really gutted by the jury trial thing. It’s a U.K. invention. Really sad and when it’s gone it’s gone.

I’ve been avoiding the news too, which isn’t new. But fuck it’s all sad.

redange · 25/11/2025 19:44

We as in my DH's generational family business, .(Northern and Southern) Divisions regularly employed around 20 under 18 year old's some as apprentices each year. Ever since the Labour Party came, July 2024 we have not taken on neither an apprentice or employed any one under 20. This in part due to wages, the increased demands regarding employment restrictions, rights of employees and 'worse' a lack of interest from under 20 year old's.

The Government say they want young people in employment, or given a chance but it is extremely difficult for SME to take on young people for the reasons outlined.
