A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

We are bracing for the budget 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

@MantleStatue I lived in the region and yes women can very much drive - they can even drive in Saudi now. Dubai has even recently decriminalised premarital sex, but in general blind eyes have been turned for years anyway.

It's extremely safe and low crime in general - when I was in Doha, the local women would leave their (designer) purses in their shopping trollies outside the designer shops when they went in to browse. Cars left unlocked and running to keep the aircon on (okay, not great environmentally I know).
It all feels very international in the best way (rather than "yookay diverse") as everyone who is there from other countries, is there to work - there's no welfare drawcard. So you wind up with a hard-working, high trust, honest society.

It’s very safe, everything is very child friendly, life is incredibly easy, lovely temperature right now, school fees are half of London fees. There are lots of sides to Dubai - it’s not all shopping and brunches (thank God).

But, summer is 3 months of not being able to go outside - most people go away for a month but it’s still really tough and boring if you don’t enjoy the mall on repeat. It’s also a very expensive place to live - rents are sky high, groceries, eating out etc. You have to drive everywhere.

My DS so wants to leave the UK.

Has anyone seen this:

EXCLUSIVE from Catherine Baski and Jonathan Ames

Juries will decide only murder, rape or manslaughter cases under a shake-up of the legal system which could signal the beginning of the end for trial by jury

Instead, the majority of cases will be heard by a judge alone

David Lammy, the deputy prime minister and justice secretary, wrote to other ministers to say that there was 'no right' to jury trials in the UK & drastic action is needed to cut the backlog of cases in the crown courts in England and Wales

Lammy’s decision goes well beyond the recommendations of Sir Brian Leveson, who was commissioned to review the criminal courts and reported in July

However, there is mounting concern within government that the record backlog of cases in the crown courts, which is approaching 80,000, shows no sign of falling

I’m in a couple of minds about this. I sat on a jury at the Old Bailey on one of the few non horrific cases in 2024. I was quite relieved that my case was not grisly and not very long.

The trouble with having juries only on rape / murder / manslaughter cases is that then jurors will expect to be on those cases for a really long time.

I'm a bit in two minds as well - selfishly, I think jury service is a potentially hugely costly, disruptive nightmare for anyone self-employed.

I know a few people whose children are living in UAE or Dubai working and having a great time ( they are only in their 20s and haven’t any children though )

Every time on every thread when someone says piously 'Oh I would willingly pay more tax' and it's pointed out that they are free to, the response comes back along the lines of 'but my little contribution is just a drop in the ocean and it wouldn't mean much

Or the response is ‘yawn’. I’m not why the posters think it’s so yawn inducing - I mean if anyone says they want to pay more tax then it’s perfectly reasonable to point out they can.

percypiggy200 · 25/11/2025 16:15

Yes. It’s not even an idea at this stage - who knows what will happen in 5 years!

When DS lived in Bermuda income tax was 12%. Investments very murky. While he lived there one ex prime minister came out to set up his investments. There's other countries that are still doing this.

One poor woman I spoke to (a juror on another case) had been made redundant a few weeks into her (long) case. She couldn’t look for another job because she had to be in court and didn’t know when her case would finish.

That is a nightmare. And you don't get properly reimbursed either - if you're earning hundreds a day it's not like they pay it back. And you'd then potentially lose the entire contract so it could wind up being a significant portion of your annual earnings.

Can women drive @percypiggy200 ?

I know very little about Dubai. I think I'm unlikely to go there though as they tend I think, to not be fond of people like me (Jewish).

I spent the first 20 years of my adult life living in a range of countries. My favourite was Ukraine followed by Georgia. Then the UK. Even aside from the whole leaving thing I have itchy feet!

Edited

Yes of course! I think you’re thinking about Saudi Arabia - although women can drive there too now (since 2018 actually). Unmarried couples can live together. You are supposed to dress modestly in public places but this is not observed - people dress the same as in the UK. I wouldn’t kiss on the lips in a public place though.

There is a synagogue in the UAE - in Abu Dhabi actually (which is an hour down the road) - it’s part of the Abrahamic Family House which is three buildings - a church, a mosque and a synagogue and lots of cafes in the middle. I love the idea of it, they are open for worship but also have a program of classes and events so you can learn about the different faiths.

Lots of stuff feels very western, everyone speaks English, all signs etc are in English, it’s all very modern, cosmopolitan, loads of international people. They keep lifting restrictions - they want expats to settle here. They love Halloween - which was surprising to me!

I totally understand your itchy feet - I think there’s also something rejuvenating in packing up your life and moving it and starting again - it’s so exciting, hard but really rewarding. You must feel that way too if you’ve done it so many times!

Nope, I'm dead against, as is the Law Society. This is not what Leveson recommended, and as far as I can see, there is no evidence to suggest that this would even reduce the backlog. Thats before you even get into the right to a fair trial. I don't think this is right or fair. Starmer is supposed to be a human rights lawyer fgs.

Judges can also be biased. I think this will also lead to an increase in the conviction rate, and the constant examination of the previous political affiliation of judges. Jury trials aren't perfect and can also be affected by bias, but these proposals would not be an improvement on what we have now imo.

I forgot the main thing! It’s dynamic. It’s growing. It feels like everyone is pulling in the same direction, working hard, the government wants to make the country attractive to business. The UK feels like managed decline. Dubai is thriving and it feels like it has a great future.

Why the influx of people stalking @percypiggy200 to interrogate about her living arrangements?

This thread is to discuss Labour's failings. The stalkers just look fucking weird. Get a new obsession, people!

@percypiggy200 Don't engage, not worth it. The op is very clear that this thread is about the current Labour government, not your personal circumstances.
