A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

We are bracing for the budget 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I'm just saying that those you want to pay more tax can do so. But there'd be more actual measurable impact if they gave the money to local charity issues.

No-one on this thread is wanting to pay more tax. The point is that Chris O'Shea could always have availed himself of the mechanism to overpay - he doesn't need to wait for his taxes to be raised, if he's feeling so generous.

Of course.

YouGov polling, helpfully just before the budget so we can see the impact

Reform 25 (-2)
Labour 19 (nc)
Conservative 18 (+1)
Greens 16 (-1)
LibDems 15 (+2)

To me at least, that doesn't look as batty as previous polls; Reform losing ground, Conservatives edging up and Greens where they belong.

Upstartled · 25/11/2025 11:55

It'll be interesting to see if the other pollsters follow the same pattern. Greens vary between 11 and 18 depending on who is polling and I think the big divergence between them is how they handle the don't knows. I wonder if the support for Greens has gained ground but still quite shallow - just a guess.

The thing with charity is that it's voluntary

As are VC’s to HMRC…

In any event, I have no plans to do anything other than mitigate my exposure to HMRC.

As to charity, I avoid any with over-compensated CEO’s etc.

Yes yes. I understand. I agree. I also think it's very sanctimonious to say "ooh I wish I was taxed more".

Every time on every thread when someone says piously 'Oh I would willingly pay more tax' and it's pointed out that they are free to, the response comes back along the lines of 'but my little contribution is just a drop in the ocean and it wouldn't mean much'.

Convenient, much? They get to virtue signal while doing fuck all.

100% - a good old humblebrag.

Which is why I say if they wanted to make a meaningful impact they could do community projects in their local area. But they don't.

SouthernAccents · 25/11/2025 12:24

Just over 24 hours until the budget to end all budgets, the mother of all budgets etc etc.

Yep every time.

I used to help fund raise for the RNLI by working on a stall at local events selling v merchandise but stopped because so many people were quite aggressive and blaming me for taxi-ing illegal migrants across the Channel from French waters.

MantleStatue · 25/11/2025 12:35

DH used to work for an internationally famous NGO and he was pretty scathing about most of the big ones spent their money. And CEO salaries. And first class flights taken to Davos etc.

We'd prefer to pay tax to HMRC than to the vast majority of charities.

But as net contributers with DCs in private school, and a hefty CGT bill or two coming we have plenty of opportunities to pay loads of tax, and even more to come while only being castigated and sneered at by people on MN, wider society and our very own Government!

Never mind George Osborne sending thank you notes to people who made voluntary contributions to HMRC. I reckon the government should send thank you cards to more than a few of us on the thread!

SouthernAccents · 25/11/2025 12:35

Reeves: I am not in show business.

Just as well, given she will not be around for the encore.

Plagiarised.

EasternStandard · 25/11/2025 12:37

Why are we getting this dialogue from Labour daily? It’s as if they’re in battle with the public.

I can well imagine this @LupaMoonhowl . I live in a seaside town and have seen similar. The RNLI is an absolute lifeline to out communities, and we value them so much. We are only a few streets behind a station and it is not uncommon at all to be somewhere (cafe, shop, out at someone's for dinner) and hear people's phones going off and all of a sudden people everywhere are running as fast as they can towards the station to get changed and go.

It's even more annoying - he will certainly find a way to protect his money via various perfectly legal schemes, but what he's arguing for is yet again redistribution so so-called better off will subsidy bills for the poorer households. Overall Centrica's costs will be taxpayer's funded, blame for high energy bills shifter away from the business, he gets much higher bonus and employ hot tax accountants.

Rivalled · 25/11/2025 12:52

Yeah no thanks, our taxes have gone up well over £1000 pm even before this budget (thanks to being residing in Scotland, school vat and all the other changes).

how about average earners make that additional contribution as they do in the places Labour purports to envy….

As an additional rate paying household, we are trying to leave to the gulf states

Rivalled · 25/11/2025 13:00

Dh could easily leave, we’ve lived abroad before he gets plenty of offers but we love where we live - let’s see Scottish Indy round the corner…

Same as us. Well over £1000 a month already, and fuck knows what next.

DH was offered a job in Saudi about 15 years back but I was pregnant and we made the conscious decision to stay in the UK to root the family here.

I'm not going to say I regret this, because well- we made the right decision at the time. But again- we are among the exodus planning to leave. I have already chosen possible schools in Australia, if we leave before A-levels and DS1 has been linked in to the teacher who has the role of helping students apply for universities abroad should we manage to hang on for A-levels.

Next UK summer holidays the DCs and I are going to Australia for 8 weeks to where we think we wish to move to to househunt. We plan to have sold my rental flat as my tenant has given notice and is heading back to her home country. She's in finance and thinks Labour will destroy London as a financial global city. So already gradually liquidating assets for moveable cash.

I can't wait really. Have a 23 year old cat and a 15 year old cat and have a couple of options to transport the 15 year old with us (I doubt our 23 year old will still be with us when the actual time comes).

It's all slowly coming together. The only unknown is if we leave July next year or sit it out until DS1 finishes his A-levels.

Rivalled · 25/11/2025 13:18

I try not to reflect on how much wealthier we’d be if we’d stayed in the US 15 years ago….doesn't bear thinking about!

they are clearly burying the city - reforms to help London a s a financial sector are urgently needed..

Michigan - I loved it but a long way from family!
