The calculation of university loans is fascinating - and different- for university loans . The absent father gets off scot free : but not if he is in another blended family. It is totally based on household income. Full disclosure : it's how I got a full grant back in the Golden Age. To be fair my dad did indeed never give me a penny of any of his wealth so I did deserve it but the idea that the system didn't include him was and is both logical and bizarre.

When I was at Uni, generally, the children of wealthier parent were less well off

I know some posters here are interested in sovereignty issues.

(Obviously this article is purely FYI, as the UK doesn't do data sovereignty).

I think that Labour won’t start to turn public opinion unless people feel better off. Several measures they’ve introduced do that, but it’s not enough. Unless they deal with supermarket price gouging and food inflation I don’t think people will feel it in their pockets. Food inflation is higher than the main inflation figure. Shopping trolley costs are getting silly.

SerendipityJane · 27/11/2025 15:26

The problem is people want to feel as well off as their grandparents, without realising how well off they are right now.

cardibach · 27/11/2025 15:37

That is also true @SerendipityJane - people take things for granted a bit.
But financially the cost of a food shop is shocking even compared with a year ago.

I'm going to call it. I think people won't be happy with Labour until they find a cure for all types of cancer and even then it'll be criticised.

Labour have a huge majority in Parliament. It would take a seismic political happening to overturn it.

Meanwhile let the frothers get on with the, what must be incredibly stressful, frothing. Unless they want others to stress and don't give a shit.

That's classic MN jane.

cardibach · 27/11/2025 16:09

There’s an element of that @placemats . But I think it’s something that really needs tackling somehow. It’s the most noticeable outgoing each week.

RafaistheKingofClay · 27/11/2025 16:35

The Frothers will eventually find something else to froth about. It won’t be long until the next thing.

Still no thread from the people worried that tue VAT on school fees wouldn’t manage to break even. You’d think they’d be relieved that it’s currently projected to make more money than expected and that their calculations about the number of children switching to state are looking broadly correct.

You'd need massive deflation so everything costs 1 p again

Food prices is a real worry for many people & it’s not just a Penny or two on products it’s sometimes 50/60p at least also the shrinkflation is becoming much more noticeable I have no idea if supermarkets are profiteering but it does feel as though they are, also noticed lots of deals no longer available & for example three choices of meat/fish used to be £10.00 in M&S has increased to £12.00.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 27/11/2025 16:55

Shrinkflation is a complete curse.
Cat food pouches reduced from 100g to 85g a little while ago.
Surprise 🙀 - the cats are fully aware of this and just demand more pouches.
Manufacturers think we are too stupid to notice.

The problem is deflation means a shrinking economy.

Capitalism has firmly hitched it's wagon to endless (and therefore infinite) growth. Meaning we are all playing pass-the-(ticking)-parcel and hoping the music won't stop.

All empires fall when they run out of resources. Be it fuel, labour, food (or the land to grow it). Or in the UKs case, intelligence.

The British Empire fell (far quicker than anyone could have expected) because we ran our of money to protect it. Despite spaffing our share of Marshall Aid (that 95% of UK citizens won't know we got) on propping it up.

BIWI · 27/11/2025 17:09

The twisting and turning on the thread about immigration numbers falling is a real sight to behold.

We’re losing ‘good’ people and gaining ‘wrong’ ones, apparently Confused

There are plenty of low skilled people in the UK who should take the jobs that - apparently - all immigrants will do. And they should be forced to do those jobs. Punished in some way if they don’t want to. FFS.

The cruelty (as well as lack of critical thinking) is shocking. Although I don’t know why I’m so shocked, as it’s been played out so often on many of these threads.

BIWI · 27/11/2025 17:11

DH’s surgery went well, btw, and he’s now in recovery in the Neuro ICU. May be discharged as early as tomorrow - but I suspect more likely to be Saturday.

What a relief.

Notonthestairs · 27/11/2025 17:12

Thats great news BIWI.

I thought the numbers dropped because of policies implemented by the Conservatives = fewer health care workers, fewer students.
Is that not what they wanted?

RafaistheKingofClay · 27/11/2025 17:22

Great news @BIWI

I’m pretty sure they don’t actually want anything other than to complain about Labour and brown people (mostly Muslim ones)

re: the large families and religion thing. Loads of families at my (Catholic Church) have more than 2 children. Especially the Filipino, Indian and African ones. I’m guessing that’s not what they want either. But at least they are not Muslim.

dontcallmelen · 27/11/2025 17:26

@BIWI great news everything crossed for a smooth & swift recovery 💐
same at my Catholic church Rafa.

What can a Labour Government do about this? Perhaps extend a price cap on essentials? This whole storm on food prices rising is purely down to Brexit.

I abhor the once in a generation referendum approach that the UK has.

My approach would be to reintroduce a referendum to rejoin the EU with options more than Yes or No response. That's the grown up response to our Nations.

dontcallmelen · 27/11/2025 17:40

That’s the elephant in the room isn’t it bloody Brexit & the continuous fall out from it, even rejoining the single market/customs union would surely help alleviate some of the utter self inflicted issues.

You'll never get Brexiteers to admit that. Has there been any sense on MN at all of Bexiteers saying "I was wrong ?". No. At best you will get various tirades that it's Jeremy Corbyn and Labours fault. Seems the general consensus is they feel they should have a second go at it.

SerendipityJane · 27/11/2025 18:00

I abhor the once in a generation referendum approach that the UK has.

It should be never in a generation. We elect our MPs specifically to avoid the fracturing a single issue vote will cause.
