I assume you are not actually new to MN so you will have seen all the pre budget threads.

Yes, but now that the speculation is over.

FWIW I am content with the budget.

Deafnotdumb · 26/11/2025 15:03

My key question: does it add up? Does the extra revenue cover the bills (especially debt repayment)?

This feels like tinkering at the edges; I'm not convinced it will help productivity or stop the perverse incentives built into the tax system for people to work less.

I think it was reasonable and I’m glad they have given extra cash to larger families.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 26/11/2025 15:10

After all the doom mongering my perception is that this is a surprising dull budget.
I'm looking at the budget and thinking it won't actually make a lot of difference to me at all. Not sure what it achieves since a number of the changes don't come in for 2 or 3 years.
I really wish Labour would stop fannying around though and just stick an extra couple of pence on income tax...

I’m with you. As budgets go this is a non event.

SerendipityJane · 26/11/2025 15:37

Victoria Derbyshire to JRM

"Do you have some sympathy for Keir Starmer and Labour having to deal with the dire legacy you left them ?"

pointythings · 26/11/2025 15:38

Well, that budget was the dullest apocalyptic event ever.

ReacherJack · 26/11/2025 15:42

I do think the mansion tax absurd now I think about it.

It should be levied at 1m or lower. Ridiculous, who needs a 2m house?

The Labours Not Working thread name dissed this thread claiming theres a hint of bitterness creeping in.

Not that I'm trying to start some sort of scrap with them obvs.

Staggered there are actually fans of Kemi Badenoch.

No but that’s just semantics.

It should def be lower. I mean, 2m?!!

We could feed and house a people in need with that money.

It needs to be differentiated by region. But council tax needs a major overhaul anyway.

@lalgarh it's hilarious really. We're either starry eyed Labour fangirls or we're bitter. Whereas IRL we are just a mostly somewhat left of centre diverse bunch of people like cats, baking and having a chat about politics and other things. One wonders why we live in people's heads.

I am a massive fan. She is the epitome of how the Tory party chose to destroy itself rather than serve the country. It's even more pleasing that despite her total ineptitude she will probably still only be the penultimate leader of the Tories dodging the history books of the future.

ReacherJack · 26/11/2025 16:12

So for people in Leeds West and Pudsey and people all around the country in Yorkshire and beyond, there will be a reduction of £150 in your energy bills from April next year. That is tangible difference, money in the pockets of working people.

Few focus on positives such as this.

MsJinks · 26/11/2025 16:14

Well I think the mansion tax appeals to placing the burden on the wealthier. But as I said further down no one was worried the social care cap proposal was shafting those oop norf more than those who own not mansions in London and some of the south, so this seems to balance my fair antenna ha!
However, I listened to an explanation that the money it will bring in will be lost in other areas - stamp duty, less house moving/improvements, which sounds rational to me, so I’m not sure it’s the best at all and surely CT goes some way to ‘taxing the rich’. It definitely needs an overhaul but apparently it will cost too much. My ex council house was band A and valued at nearly as much as my late parents’ home last year who were on Band C - my current place is way cheaper than either but is a B - no sense to the rates this far from the initial set up. But I’m not sure they’re very unreasonable mainly, so maybe the fixing of this can wait.
I’d have been happier personally with an income tax rise but they’d be even more slated!
I’m definitely majorly more worried about a future Reform budget, and would be more worried about a Tory one if they had any hope at any election in the foreseeable.
Pleased with 2 child benefit stopping and more cash for devolved governments. I am sorry some of the changes have to wait a couple of years as they do need to make money a tad faster imo but guess earlier can’t be done.

SerendipityJane · 26/11/2025 16:15

Has anyone started a crowdfunder for the folk too impoverished to be able to afford the new surcharge ?

There's always been bitterness. Lots of us are open about not being happy about lots of things. I presume especially they mean bombastix yesterday but I am fairly sure she is Blue Labour (ish?) and I , and others, are Red (or these days maybe Green) Labour. We are all going to be pissed off with something. Just as many Tories were pissed off with Truss/ Johnson/Sunak / May/ Cameron ...

dontcallmelen · 26/11/2025 16:23

No bitterness from me, annoyance & disappointment at times yes definitely am really pleased they are lifting the two child cap.
something deeply unpleasant about St.Kemi but she mirrors a fair few posters on MN unfortunately.

ReacherJack · 26/11/2025 16:26

The more I think about, the more I believe we missed a trick. Reeves should have gone in a lot harder.

Now she has to do it again next year with
all the bleating and moaning from the right.

BIWI · 26/11/2025 16:29

I don’t think she could win, whatever she did though!

She's supposed to have £20bn headroom

I am beyond pissed off with Lammy and his creeptastic removal of jury trial. The man is a chancer.

Budget… well Reeves has done a can kicker. She has kicked the can down the road in terms of cuts. Classic tax and spend. Not exactly worth gnashing your teeth about.

itsgettingweird · 26/11/2025 16:39

I’ve been at work all day!

Saw the OBR had leaked the budget earlier but couldn’t actually find time to have a read in my lunch break. Although someone needs holding to account for that blunder.

Doesn’t look like it’ll affect me much richer or poorer tbh!

Glad minimum wage is being increased and glad 2 child cap is removed.

I shall be dishing out highly useful thoughts and prayers.
