Labour isn't working - Thread 20

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

We are bracing for the budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Not sure yet for me, tbc. I have a little side hustle that I'll probably expand. Nothing major, think etsy. I used to be a TA but I don't want to go back into education.
Dh has a few options but not yet decided which way he wants to jump. Possibly freelance/consulltancy, possibly ME, but I won't be joining him this time if he goes to the ME.

I'm so sorry Nuthatch.

I'm not sure what your business was, but I'm seeing lots of canaries in the coalmine in my town (commutable to London, lots of private schools) - posh kitchen design shop has gone, luxury car showroom gone, parents withdrawing from schools and going PT...

Avoid the news and sm. For what it's worth, everyone I know is talking about how much harder things are now and are placing blame squarely on this government.

Ooh careful. People are lurking and reporting. You’ll be registered with Prevent for making such a joke! In all seriousness I agree. Anything we can do, do shout. It’s so sad. It is happening up and down.

I'm beyond caring.

We had a meeting last week, the redundancies still looming looking like post Xmas now - what’s in the pipeline? Nothing. Nothing that has a hot prospect of selling in q1, so probably nothing ready to kick off in q2.

idk what Labour think they’re playing at. So hard to make that decision @TheNuthatch but I guess the horizon doesn’t look like it’ll improve whatsoever.

TheNuthatch · 22/11/2025 19:30

Thank you all. I know I'm not the only one on the thread who's suffered. I'm more worried about our staff.

Dh will do fine, whatever he decides to do.. He's that type of person. He just needs a breather as the business meant a lot to him. Whatever happens next, I'm making it my mission to keep these twats away from our money and assets. We will use every loophole we can find going forward.

Get a good IFA, we have found "wealth managers" much better than standard IFAs

Oh my god. I am so sorry. Your post made me cry as I'm feeling a little emotional too. I'm so sad for you and your husband and the many like you replicated up and down the country. You've been a tower of strength and sanity on here and given us a safe place to vent. If there's anything at all we can do, please say. Happy to take some gunpowder into the houses of Parliament if that helps. Sending hugs 🫂

Please don't blow anything up 😂
Thank you Flowers

So sorry @TheNuthatch .

My DS works for a medium sized company but brilliant its hanging by a thread because of feckin Milliband and his anti oil energy. He'll have to head back to the ME to pay the bills. Leaving wife and three young children.

Same. We may just blow it all flying first class every school holiday. Why not? If we stay here it is all getting taken. My husband pays so much tax and he’d carry on IF there was a payback. He sees how bad society is and the public sector through my job. He’s one of the minority bankrolling loads of people to be universally hated. His global company are restructuring and sending a whole department to another global office. So that’s more British jobs gone. High skilled, highest rate tax payers, etc. DIRECTLY as a result of this government and the constant fiscal uncertainties and taxing of the private sector. Nothing to do with BREXIT or the Tories. All this has kicked off since the last budget. Loads of people losing their jobs after the holidays.

Thank you.

We were in construction. Mainly civil engineering but can't say more as outing. It feels so strange talking about it in the past tense!

Friend has a hospitality business his chef has flounced. They advertised for another chef a nearly impossible task before and just after COVID.

He's had five applicants from top drawer businesses. Who would have sneered at a family run business previously. They're way over qualified.

Our dc have accrued quite a lot recently. 😉

I’m glad he’ll be ok although I bet it’s a big blow.

8 people out of work. That’s on Labour and those backing them 😥

The thing is, people just won’t pay it. We CAN afford it but we don’t eat out much anymore. We NETFLIX and take away. Just an average meal out, a couple of drinks, family run place - £200 for 2.

Even a takeaway which we do get every week; £60 for two. With the teens about £100 per week! 😬🫣

Costs are so big nowadays!

Sorry to hear that.
I've lived in the Saudi, but we didn't have dc then. I insisted we came back to the UK to raise our dc. I wish I hadn't bothered now!
I have family with young dc in UAE and they're thriving. I think it depends on the country out there.

Yep, spot on.
All of our staff were higher rate payers. They've all gone freelance, some thinking of leaving for the ME. Its not just money we're losing, its brain drain.

KSA is a Lot different now than before 2018.. loads of construction projects going on as well - booming in fact..the opposite of here. I’d go with the kids if they were little, for sure. Def worth him looking when you’re up to it.

Just reading about exodus by businesses due to doom. I don’t even know why the few Labour supporters are still batting for them. Do they not know anyone in the private sector?

But, but, but…it’s not happening remember. It’s anecdotal scaremongering and just not true. Lalalala.

@Catatemyhomework I think they were about to do this though - I mean, I think the Tories were about to revisit the welfare situation

One of the things I really struggled with was that I felt the Tories put a lot of mental health issues onto people with their lockdown. However, I am extremely aware that it would've been much worse under Labour.

There were definitely rumblings about it before the election was called

i'm generally very confused by universal credit. There are a couple of people claiming who I'm surprised are able to claim, within my known circle. Both single and child free. One used to work in the City, basically wasted his money trying a hopeless alternativecareer (long story) ....but I now wonder if he deliberately sold and went back into a rental knowing that he could factor UC into his calculations.

Edited

The Conservatives started the PIP investigation that was completed the September that Labour came in

ie. The one that was voted out

Thanks. I'm sure its changed a lot since we lived there. Dh has already had an offer, but like I said I won't be joining him if he goes. Our youngest two are still in education so its not an option right now.
