A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

We are bracing for the budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Will they ban us from leaving? Will they force us to work until retirement even if we're self sufficient? How will they finance it? Genuine questions. I have no idea and it scares me.

what do you mean by "force"?

Tell us we can't retire and we have to keep working, irrespective of whether we are self funding early retirements. They don't like people retiring earlier, not that they give an incentive not too. I jyst don't trust them not to turn the screws, force us to work to pay for the feckless. I probably sound bonkers, but I am often right in the end. Wouldn't put anything passed these fuckers.

Catatemyhomework · 22/11/2025 14:29

Also see assets seizing with increased council tax. Something no one expects to have doubled over night. I am band C so no skin in this particular game, but it will force people to keep working when they otherwise might have decided to down tools.
They won't tie us to railings and whip us to work, but they will force it one way or another.

They could probably force people economically in some way, like removing the tax free allowance for those deemed able to work (living off their own money), but not doing so. I sincerely hope not, but given the current direction of travel, I could actually visualise it a couple more budgets in, given the hugely targetted, hugely spiteful tax raising schemes they're so keen on.

I do understand what you're saying and it links directly into why I attended that seminar about over 50s and work - I'm not 50 yet though I'm not far off.

I was curious to know what you meant by force, but it sounds like you mean financially

so it would mean imposing some kind of tax on people who support themselves not to work. So that could be on their home, their savings, etc. Yes, this worries me as well.

One could argue that the covenant between state and individual is already at breaking point - if Reeves goes ahead with doubling the council tax on certain bands, I suspect a not-insignificant number of people will be unable to meet their financial commitments.

Add in rising unemployment, and the lack of job opportunities - particularly amongst the young, as well as jobless and disaffected immigrants etc., you have the recipe for a degree of social unrest - IMHO.

And the blame will fall squarely at this government’s feet.

Yes I feel the same. Civil unrest is not far away. People have had enough.

I agree with this. I think people are just generally fed up. They are making everything worse. Resentment is starting to filter through.

There was talk briefly about an exit tax. Apparently for businesses who flee. But it does not take much to extrapolate that out.

I think they have canned that haven’t they? One way to make sure no one ever invests here!

Is it though? I mean I know it is in the circles i move in, the circles other people on this thread move in - because we are the ones who are going be made a lot poorer by the upcoming budget. By this Labour party. But millions of people will be (and already are) better off, the net takers. The ‘workers’. So I think we might be too small a number of people for ‘civil unrest’. Although obviously we pay the majority of taxes. Who cares about where the money comes from, as long as it carries on coming. In future when it stops, then there’s trouble at mill. But for Labour for now they give zero fcks about anything past the next 3.5 years.

DancingFerret · 22/11/2025 15:01

While this article is worth reading, it's the comments that confirm almost the entire nation is a political echo chamber clamouring for Labour and its awful policies to be gone.

I think that’s when there will be trouble. When there isn’t enough people left to pay for the state and the welfare bill. It IS all going to have to be cut, it is just a matter of by who and when. That’s when the trouble will start.

The really sad thing about it all? It didn’t need to be this way. If growth and success were encouraged, we’d have more tax, more people working, more productivity and more for all. Those who really need welfare would know the system is going to support them. At the moment it will need cutting.

A rising tide and all that. More for hospitals, schools, state and everything else but no.

This is the problem when it comes to getting shot of Labour; there is now an almost 50/50 split between the "non-workers" and those who enjoy a life free of worry at their expense.

If it keeps tipping towards state dependency how do you get out of that?

I guess the welfare state will just fail.

Twinkyinthecity · 22/11/2025 15:11

Exactly that @DancingFerret and@Legolava

I really do believe there should always be free state services such as education, health, etc. I also strongly believe in the welfare model. I’d happily pay more tax to fund both.

Like most of the population, I can see the current situation is unstable and more tax won’t help. It will probably make it worse.

I am genuinely worried as the higher tax rate payers leave, taking their skills with them. I am worried what will happen when the state has to cut the umbilical cord. What will happen to those who need the safety net? State services?

Everyone seems intent on pulling everyone down rather than lifting everyone up. Yeah, Joe Bloggs may get a tax cut if they sort out the cliff edges. They may well work more, pay more tax and keep working for longer. This gives more money to an ageing population, growing state and public services. Win - win. However, people can’t see past the fact that Joe Bloggs has more. Even if they worked hard for it. It’s just so self harming. Punishing the people who we need to work to support the state.

Redistribution is not wealth creation.

Classic gaslighting, the arses.

Rivalled · 22/11/2025 15:46

I don’t understand how we got into a situation where half of adults don’t pay taxes - it’s very odd and wonder how it stacks up across other rich countries. Off to look.

EasternStandard · 22/11/2025 15:50

I think Labour are doing so badly their SM team are having a laugh. A couple of posts came up (no following here obvs) and the comments were sheer backlash.

But the posts were almost comedic. I reckon it’s some young people just laughing as they post at this point.

MantleStatue · 22/11/2025 15:50

I live now in a fairly economically depressed area. Seaside area, filled with some wealthier retirees who retired to their holiday homes and mostly people on benefits.

I was once saying in some wonder to a mum at school- who happens to work for our local council- that our council tax here is much larger than what our council tax was in Wimbledon. For a house the same size, but worth less than half. She said that it's because only 11% of households in this area actually paid council tax.

I know right. The problem is, there won't be anyone left to pay for the state. Then what happens? This is seriously worrying. It feels like communism is edging closer

Yes, the GDR was in a poor financial state by the time the Berlin Wall fell. However they had ingenious ways of raising money such as selling political prisoners to the West and confiscating valuable works of art and selling it to the West.
I’m not sure who UK could sell prisoners to, but there’s plenty of art which could be confiscated and sold.

Do you mean income tax specifically?
