Labour isn't working - Thread 20

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

We are bracing for the budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Welcome @Twinkyinthecity .

I've said on here before but I used to be pretty committed Labour. A member and canvasser and scrutineer.

They genuinely make me feel sick with what they have done and will do. If KS, AR, RR or BP come onto the television I have a visceral revulsion response that is literally a physical response.

The hard-of-thinking interlopers who claim we are all right-wing are fools. And so blinded by their own prejudice that it would be laughable. Except they actually believe we don't even have the right to discuss what is happening with our own lives.

That’s true. Our income has reduced to date - and it sounds like a lot more to come. We’ve (hopefully) secured investments where possible, as not trusting what’s going to happen in the next few weeks / months.

ETA. We can’t move because kids at school exam time etc. We would otherwise.

Edited

Everyone we know has been securing investments, seeing IFAs etc to try and prevent Labour getting their hands on any more of their very hard earned money. Even withdrawing large sums of cash etc.

MantleStatue · 20/11/2025 10:17

I've said before too we plan on moving. The hope was when DS1 finishes his A-levels. He has a range of SEN and is in a very small very nurturing independent school. He has a history of self harm and suicidal ideation. We will do everything we can to keep him in this school. He's in Year 11. I've already had meetings with schools in Australia which is my home country and if push comes to shove we can in theory move when his GCSE exams are over. Give the DCs a couple of months at home then start the 2027 academic year in January in Australia.

I never would have thought in a million years that we would be in a situation where we would choose to give up the UK and our lives here. But here we are.

I know a lot of High Net Worth individuals and families where the tipping point has been reached in terms of going or staying. In theory my sister and DH are but still want to be farmers despite this Government. DH and I came back south from Cheshire to run the Southern Division 7 years ago a family business with over 350 staff split across both the North and South ! DH's brother runs the North . An opportunity to be close to my aging mum and dad is why we came back south. However, a further 5% reduction in turnover or more extreme tax policies for businesses, will put a 130 year old business in trouble.

This being a business that has looked after 5 generations putting them all though Public School ( the exceptions being my three though both DD's did go to Prep) Thus, ensuring an extremely high standard of living for all members of family being possible.

That is how bad the current economic and societal problem is.

It’s a fucking slow motion car crash.
I cannot believe we have got to this point.

I am going to watch the pièce de résistance from the pub next week with my team.

Well, we figured that if it proves the cluster we all expect, we can all get properly hosed….

twistyizzy · 20/11/2025 10:53

It's the point that the people continually being told they have to pay more, are already paying the most yet having to make cuts themselves!
We have cut to the bone yet I am already expecting to be hammered even more just so those on benefits can get a rise when I haven't had a pay rise for over 6 years!
I hope they do bring in a 1.5m mansion tax, that will wipe out the final 1% of the population who are still Labour supporters.

redange · 20/11/2025 11:02

I am obviously in a very fortunate position and am not looking for any 'sympathy'. I just want to highlight that DH feels he is personally responsible for 200 jobs hence 200 families are dependent that he keeps the Southern section of the business solvent. This division is in a worse shape than the Northern Section.

That is a lot of responsibility and pressure 😐 but hey he is one of the bad ones according to some!
DH was in same position before he was made redundant. Looking for 40K jobs now instead has been a relief for him ie the massive reduced amount of responsibility and seniority.

Hi, long term reader and thought I should say hi. I live in NE Scotland so our economy has been massively hit by both the initial Energy Profits Levy (it should have disappeared as soon as the high gas prices went down) and now made much worse by Labour’s approach to Energy. (Increased EPL, presumption against oil and gas development, and not a green job in sight.) It’s really evident in the NE Scotland house prices which are heading in the opposite direction to the rest of Scotland.

Along with both my husband and my job insecurity, my teens saw their hours drastically reduced at their jobs at a local garden centre due to the last budget. Even with the increased minimum wage, less hours for my youngest meant he made far less money to save for uni than we’d hoped.

And along with Labour not working, we have the SNP’s examples of what happens if you increase tax rates and decrease thresholds. I’m not the only one at my work reducing hours to stay under the 75K tax threshold (45% here) and I know others avoiding the £43,663 mark as we’ve a really punitive rate of 42%+8%NI up to the 50K national insurance threshold. All of this reducing tax to the government because there comes a point where it’s not worth it…

I find this thread really interesting to hear how things are impacting folk in other parts of the county and especially appreciate that this thread allows shades of grey in opinions and views.

I could be wrong, but I suspect most of the interlopers are driven by the need to protect and maintain their generous state handouts.

Yes its odd particularly in in places like Didsbury and Chorlton In Manchester where I think 60% of all the Guardian Newspapers go. Houses can be worth the 1.5 Million mark 3 miles from 'Harpurhey'

SouthernAccents · 20/11/2025 11:11

Terrific to see the new posters sharing their ‘lived experiences’.

You are in with a great crowd here!

I stand corrected its actually 7 miles from Didsbury- Harpurhey ....

Well done Jacob I maybe biased but please a voice of reason. I wonder what happens in the HOP do tories and Labour socialise together or keep to their own lane

I don’t know about the HOP but I remember many years ago we were staying with friends in Scotland and a Tory MP had a house nearby to which he invited Tony & Cherie as he was his pair or whatever it’s called.

Twisty, There are some on here who say they are rich and are begging to pay more tax so maybe their wish will be granted.

Twinkyinthecity · 20/11/2025 11:23

There’s another thread atm asking what people would like to have seen live, in the past. People have mentioned seeing Stonehenge built etc (and some, inexplicably want to be there for the great fire of London..); anyway a few mentioned they’d loved to have gone to The Great Exhibition, in 1851. I’d never thought about it before but I agree! It would have been buzzing and economy booming. Ideas, growth etc. The total opposite to today’s shambolic pos.

The Great Exhibition of 1851
The Great Exhibition of 1851 was probably the most successful, memorable and influential cultural event of the 19th century.

‘From May to October 1851, Hyde Park in London was filled with visitors to the ‘Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations’. The exhibition’s huge success confounded the predictions of its many doubters in parliament and the press: it was visited by over six million people (equivalent to a third of the British population at that date), and generated a vast profit of £186,000.
The 1851 exhibition was the first ever international exhibition of manufactured products. It inspired a long succession of international fairs in other cities, including Paris, Dublin, New York, Vienna and Chicago – almost one a year for the rest of the 19th century.’

Precisely. They should be happy that they will get the opportunity, they have been asking to for 18 months!

Yes. Imagine Labours exhibition.. a marquee with very few attendees. Muddy floor and a couple of stands for trade unions sign up and benefit entitlement information.
