A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

We are bracing for the budget. 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Snow flurries down here in the Deep South this morning, very unusual - and actually quite nice (as long as it doesn't settle).

Reeves with her awful staccato delivery on the BBC this morning: "There are "300,000 more jobs in the economy than at the beginning of the year". Presumably she means public sector jobs because irl redundancy is the word in the street.

Also worth noting inflation might be at 3.6 percent, but food inflation is actually 4.9 percent.

Well yeh it’s public sector. What is she on honestly.

If that’s what they’re using we really are up shit creek. What a deflection.

I thought this was interesting from the Telegraph

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/cd9c77a24867d7ad

It seems that the government has instructed civil servants to monitor social media for “high-risk narratives” and to produce counter-narratives to protect both departmental reputation and policy goals.

Now there's a surprise.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/11/2025 10:39

Working age benefits will increase by 3.8%... but tax thresholds will remain frozen through this whole period of high inflation. Benefits aren't taxed of course, so the threshold won't touch those.

You can see who the Labour party is run for. And it isn't working people or tax payers.

That's why we've been categorised as non-working! 😩 I'm such a wage slave for a non-worker! 😭

Has anyone from Labour realised people leaving and taking taxes with them is a problem yet?

Well their wasting their breath on forums. Folks aren't budging now and I won't be leaned on persuaded until after the budget.

Sorry but your graph literally proves my point. In July 2024, food inflation was at 1.5%.

Retailers are blaming the budget for our current prices, specifically NI and NMW.

It's even more than this - October 24 was the first month when inflation begun to grow on the back of Labour coming into power and all "tough messages" and then budget.

Recent inflation numbers were vs much lower inflation last year. So 3.6% Oct 25 vs 3.2% in Oct 24 is significant.

But no, they will increase benefits and NMW

What?????

"The Cabinet Office oversees the 6,000-strong Government Communications Service (GCS), which is responsible for pushing campaigns and policy messaging across government departments."

6000 people to monitor social media????? are we in Russia or China?
Please tell me it's not for real, please

And even at 25k pa on NMW it would be 150m for salaries only, excl employers NIC and pension contribution... of taxpayers money? this could fund more than 3000 teachers which weren't hired on the back of school VAT

justasking111 · 19/11/2025 10:55

NMW is an interesting one. Some friends dropped in at the weekend. He's in a tourism association. They had the usual big meeting last week. One thing that came out of it was hiring young people. They're costing too much, are too flaky with their hangovers, late nights so turning in for work late. The members are now hiring much older staff, it's only a few more pence an hour. They actually turn up for their shifts. Hospitality has had enough.

I'm having second thoughts about the Christmas turkey. Fuck knows how much it will cost.

I wonder if I can roast a biggish chicken and ask everybody to pretend they have not noticed.

FWIW we did that for years. FIL loves turkey but I always cocked it up. (See what I did there). So every year I ordered an 8-pound chicken. We called it 'Churkey'.

FIL- who was smart as a whip was not fooled. But he chose to politely ignore the substitution. He was great. I miss him dreadfully.

He sounds lovely.

By the time the churkey is covered with gravy and bread sauce, and surrounded with piggies in blankets and cranberry sauce, I think I'll be safe.

  • Early estimates for October 2025 indicate that the number of payrolled employees was 30.3 million, which is a fall of 0.6% from October 2024; this is equivalent to 180,000 fewer employees.
  • The largest increase was in the public administration and defence sector, with a rise of 16,000 employees; the largest decrease was in the wholesale and retail sector, with a fall of 71,000 employees.

The main issue were the size of the wings and legs. But if you really wanted to fool people you could remove them and shred them ready for the churkey curry the day after Boxing day.

He was great. He taught me how to make a really decent salad. He used coriander and parsley as salad leaves rather than lettuce-type things. Unbelievably flavourful.

There will be no fooling them. Grin

Would be interesting to see FT vs PT stats for 71,000 retail /wholesale employees. If it's FT equivalent, than this loss is likely to offset the employers' NIC rise... but some proportion of them will go on benefits? so it's likely to be net loss?

Remind me please, was RR contextual in Oxbridge? I have a degree, not in economics, but this is f..ing obvious consequence, how is this possible she doesn't see this?

No, because they reside in a parallel dimension where everything is tickety boo.

Yes, they even lie to themselves.

Considering BP decided to 'not accept those figures' of the 25,000 students leaving the private sector since January then yes I do think they live in some sort of upside down world.

Talking of private schooling- I miss our esteemed @twistyizzy who was rather brilliant at cutting through the crap around VAT on fees. I guess another esteemed PP might be right when she said she thought our Twisty has had a (hopefully temporary) ban.

Yes I’ve been thinking about @twistyizzytoo. Some of the hounding was relentless and I’m concerned some have made an effort to drive her off mn.

I don't think she's been banned or suspended though. She has left us for an extended break before, so hopefully she'll be back at some point.
